Whitecaps, Rapids seek to end slumps
The Vancouver Whitecaps and Colorado Rapids will set out to reverse some recent poor form in MLS play when they meet Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo.
The Whitecaps (11-4-5, 38 points) have dropped three of their last four games to lose their grip on the top spot in the Western Conference to San Diego FC. But Vancouver coach Jesper Sorensen is well aware of the toll a busy, largely successful season has taken on his club.
After reaching the CONCACAF Champions Cup final on June 1, Vancouver spent most of the month without leading scorer Brian White and wingers Jayden Nelson and Sebastian Berhalter, who were all on international duty.
That trio was back for Wednesday's 2-1 win over Valour FC in the Canadian Championship quarterfinals and should be available on Saturday. Playmaker Ryan Gauld remains out with a knee issue.
'I think that we'll be picking up again,' Sorensen said after that win. 'Right now, we've also been relying a lot on a lot of the same players performing, and it's normal that it's not just a straight line, that it's up and down in the season, and we'll pick up again.'
Meanwhile, the Rapids (7-10-5, 26 points) have lost five of their last seven games in the league to slide out of the playoff places after a promising start.
Most recently, Colorado fell 3-0 Wednesday at Los Angeles FC -- a match in which Jackson Travis was issued a red card for violent conduct in the sixth minute and Denis Bouanga put the hosts in front by halftime from the penalty spot.
The Rapids have scored multiple goals only twice in their last 13 MLS games while going scoreless in five. Djordje Mihailovic has eight goals and Rafael Navarro seven, but the rest of the squad has only nine combined.
'The main thing for us is that we have to understand that there's going to be no easy games, and this is a huge opportunity for us, at home, against a good team,' Rapids coach Chris Armas said during a Thursday interview with Denver's Altitude Sports Radio. 'But we're a good team, and we welcome the challenge. We've got to focus on the controllables. ... You can't look externally for solutions.'

Thomas Müller delivers Whitecaps a sellout for his debut
Herr Raumdeuter's debut really is here. Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sorensen confirmed after a rainy training session Friday that new signing Thomas Müller will be involved in the match day squad on Sunday when the Whitecaps host the Houston Dynamo at B.C. Place Stadium. How much he'll play remains a question, Sorensen admitted, but rest assured the German superstar will play. In other words, the nearly 30,000 fans who will be in attendance at B.C. Place on Sunday won't be disappointed. Their new hero will be there too. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. Friday afternoon, the Whitecaps announced that the full inventory of tickets they'd made available had been sold out. That means the whole lower bowl. And no, there won't be an opening of the upper bowl. There's a long season yet to be played and the Whitecaps realize they're building an in-demand project. Plus opening up the upper deck isn't just something done with the snap of a finger: B.C. Place needs a couple days advance notice to make it happen for staffing reasons and more. The team is encouraging fans to arrive at the stadium around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, 2.5 hours ahead of kickoff, if they want to be part of the welcoming ceremony for Muller. A walking, talking content machine, the uber-talented Müller seems to go everywhere with a smile and will surely be quick to connect with his new fans. 'It was time for a new adventure,' he said at his introductory press conference Wednesday. 'But an adventure for me is only interesting when it's about having the chance to go for titles. If you watch the Vancouver Whitecaps this season and also the development over the past years, there is a chance not only this year but also next year. I am looking forward to something new, something fresh.' pjohnston@

Thomas Muller set to make Vancouver debut vs. Houston
(Photo credit: Anne-Marie Sorvin-Imagn Images) Thomas Muller appears raring to go. The 35-year-old German superstar, who arrived mid-week to sign with Vancouver, is set to see his first Major League Soccer action when the Whitecaps (13-6-6, 45 points) play host to the Houston Dynamo (7-11-7, 28 points) on Sunday night. Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen confirmed after practice Friday that Muller will play. 'He will be in the squad and he will be on the pitch. For how long, we're going to find out,' Sorensen said. 'Everyone's excited, everyone wants to go. But we also have to be aware that we have to do the right thing.' Muller, an attacking midfielder/forward, scored 250 goals in all competitions over 18 seasons with Bayern Munich, winning 13 Bundesliga titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns and leading Germany to the 2014 FIFA World Cup title. 'I was always a competitive guy during my whole life, and my love is to play soccer,' Muller said at an introductory news conference Thursday. 'And my body feels, even in (this) stage of my career, too good to retire.' Fans filled Vancouver's airport for his arrival Wednesday and the club's owners, who had previously been looking to sell the franchise, are now looking to take on additional partners and build a new stadium. 'I know that a player with my career coming to Vancouver (is) creating a little bit of a hype,' Muller said. 'And we want to stay on the hype train as long as possible.' The Whitecaps are in second place in the Western Conference, but they're coming off a 2-1 loss last weekend in San Jose in which they conceded the deciding goal in second-half stoppage time. That snapped their three-match unbeaten streak (2-0-1) in league play. The Dynamo rallied for a 2-2 draw last Saturday at Austin as Jack McGlynn tallied twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation. That wasn't enough to snap Houston's seven-match winless streak in all competitions (0-5-2). 'A little bit of the same story with us at the moment,' said Dynamo coach Ben Olsen, whose team is four points out of the Western Conference's final playoff berth. 'Some good performances, some not so good.' The clubs met July 16 in Houston with the Whitecaps winning 3-0 behind goals from Emmanuel Sabbi, Sebastian Berhalter and Brian White.
