Penang may opt for another bridge across Penang Straits for third link
GEORGE TOWN: Will Penang's third link be another bridge instead of the proposed undersea tunnel project?
State Infrastructure, Transport and Utility Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari (DAP – Tanjung Bunga), in his winding-up speech during the state legislative assembly sitting this afternoon, said the state government is currently considering a proposal for a new design change, from an undersea tunnel to a bridge across the Penang Straits.
"The feasibility study was completed in 2023, covering the viability of the new design, namely, a bridge, or other alternative designs.
"The implementation study for this alternative design will be completed in the near future, and the new design is expected to be finalised once the study is concluded," he said.
Zairil said a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) and all other necessary evaluations would be carried out thereafter.
In February, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the third link for vehicular movement between Penang island and Seberang Prai would involve a change in alignment. He, however, did not reveal details of the new alignment and remained non-committal as to whether the third link would be an undersea tunnel or another bridge.
Back in 2021, it was reported that the state government had not ruled out the possibility of a third bridge to replace the proposed undersea tunnel project connecting the island and the mainland.
Penang already has two bridges, with the second bridge currently underutilised.
The undersea tunnel is part of the RM6.3 billion mega project in the state.

No Cabinet vacancies yet, don't pressure PM, says Loke
DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said it is the prime minister's prerogative to decide on Cabinet positions. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : All parties were urged today not to pressure Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over the resignations of Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as ministers. DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, who is transport minister, said the two posts had yet to be vacated as the PKR duo are merely on leave for now, Bernama reported. 'The appointment of ministers is the jurisdiction and prerogative of the prime minister. I am confident that he will act wisely in this matter and will take various factors into account in filling any vacancies,' Loke was quoted as saying. 'So far, there are no vacancies. As stated by the prime minister, he only approved the leave application of both ministers. They still hold their positions for now, (they are) just on leave,' he was quoted as saying. The resignations of Rafizi as economy minister and Nik Nazmi as natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, followed their defeats in the PKR central leadership elections. Rafizi had lost his PKR deputy presidency to Anwar's daughter, Nurul Izzah, while Nik Nazmi failed to be re-elected as a party vice-president. The Prime Minister's Office later confirmed that Anwar had received their letters of resignation and leave applications, but only the latter was approved. The PMO added that further decisions would be announced by Anwar later on. Anwar was dealt another issue to handle after investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz quit Umno yesterday and said he planned to join PKR. This has led to Umno urging Anwar to ensure that another Umno man would be appointed to a Cabinet post, since Tengku Zafrul was appointed on the party's quota. Loke chose not to comment on the matter, saying it was none of DAP's business. 'If it does not involve my party, I will not comment. DAP members also know that and have not made any statements. I do not encourage anyone to make the situation worse if the issue involves component parties.'

Leave PM to decide issue of ministers' resignation, says Loke
SEREMBAN: All parties are urged not to put pressure on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim following the resignation of two ministers from the cabinet recently. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Anwar will make a decision based on thorough consideration and at his discretion, in the best interests of the country. "The appointment of ministers is the jurisdiction and prerogative of the prime minister… I am confident that he will act wisely in this matter and will take various factors into account in filling any vacancies. So far, there are no vacancies. "As stated by the PM, he only approved the leave for both ministers. So far, they still hold their positions, (they are) just on leave," he told reporters after attending a Hi-Tea event with 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top achievers in Negri Sembilan. On Wednesday, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad resigned from the cabinet, effective June 17 and July 4 respectively, after losing in the 2025 PKR party elections. Rafizi failed to defend his post as PKR deputy president after losing to Nurul Izzah Anwar while Nik Nazmi lost in the race for vice-presidency. The Prime Minister's Office said in a statement that Anwar had received letters from the two ministers requesting leave and tendering their resignations from the cabinet posts. The statement also confirmed that Anwar had approved their leave requests, and that any further decisions would be communicated by the prime minister. Meanwhile, Loke, who is also the Seremban member of parliament, said that DAP would not interfere in the internal affairs of any party, including component parties. "The issue of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz quitting Umno and applying to join PKR is not our party's business. So, I'm taking the approach that if it does not involve my party, I will not comment. "DAP members also know that and have not made any statements. I do not encourage anyone to make the situation worse if the issue involves component parties… if there is an appointment or vacancy, that is their business," he said. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul, who is investment, trade and industry minister, announced his resignation from Umno and all the posts he held in the party.
