Boston Celtics jersey history No. 27 - Rich Niemann (1968)

USA Today7 days ago
The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history.
To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team.
With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover.
And for today's article, we will continue with the fifth of 13 people to wear the No. 27, Boston big man alum Rich Niemann. After ending his college career at St. Louis, Niemann was picked up with the 42nd overall selection of the 1968 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons.
The St. Louis, Missouri native also played for the Milwaukee Bucks before he was cut and claimed on waivers by Boston in 1969. His stay with the team would span just six games before he'd be cut again, heading to the ABA.
During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Niemann wore only jersey No. 27 and put up 1.0 points and as many rebounds per game.

Draya Michele reveals true feelings on Jalen Green's Suns trade

The post Draya Michele reveals true feelings on Jalen Green's Suns trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. Draya Michele is sharing how she feels amid her boyfriend, Jalen Green, trade from the Houston Rockets to the Phoenix Suns. In the blockbuster trade, Kevin Durant was traded from the Suns to the Rockets for Green, Dillon Brooks, the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, and five second-round picks. 'Well this was my first time experiencing a trade,' Draya told The Post. 'I just think, you know, as his girlfriend, my main responsibility is to support him wherever we were going. Draya and Green have been dating since 2023 and share a daughter together whom they welcomed in 2024. 'I always make the jokes with him and tell him, 'I don't care what city you're in, we could go to hell and play for the hell… and I'll go with you, as long as I have a good SPF… it doesn't matter where we are, if we have each other we'll make the best of it.' It's really just putting families together with their dream cars and making things convenient and also luxurious.' Despite having to make new living arraignments, the model is making the most of it and is looking to find a place to settle down in soon. 'Luckily [Phoenix] is an amazing city,' she said. 'We were not disappointed with Phoenix at all. But I just need to be supportive of him and of the change and then just try to make things as smooth of a transition [as possible] for him, and not stressing him out with the worries of moving and all that.' The mom of three — Draya has two sons which she shares one with former NFL player Orlando Scandrick — shares that she is going to be in charge of finding them a place while Green settles into his new role on the Suns. 'He's not gonna have to lift the finger. I'll handle all of that so that he can just relax and play basketball. Once he gets there, he won't have anything else to worry about. And that's just really what I try to focus on: keeping things convenient and easy for him.' What Has Jalen Green Said About The Trade? Green shared he was 'hurt' by the news but had a 'feeling' that the Rockets were going to trade him. 'Yeah, I had a feeling. They've been trying to trade me since last year,' Green responded after being asked if the trade was unexpected per The Houston Chronicle. 'I'm not tripping. It's for the better of the team. I know it's a business at the end of the day. I really can't handle how I feel. Whatever happens, happens. At the end of the day, I still got the opportunity to play basketball.' Green got his start in the NBA with the Rockets after being drafted by the team in 2021. 'It hurts,' Green said (via The Arizona Republic's Duane Rankin). 'Houston is home to me and will forever be home to me. I started my NBA career there, and I've built a lot in that situation. However, he is making light of the situation but was expected given the nature of the league. 'Obviously it's sad to leave, but it's a business though, you've got to understand that when you coming into the NBA.' Despite initially feeling hurt about the situation, he is ready for his start with the Suns and has big goals for his time there. 'The hunger is already there,' Green said in an interview with Duane Rankin. 'I've made it the playoffs already as it is. I may have not performed how I should've performed, but at the end of the day, the goal is to be in the playoffs every year. I got a taste of it now. There's no reason I shouldn't have the goal to get back.' Related: Bradley Beal's plans for 2026 free agency after signing with Clippers Related: The $210 million impact of Bradley Beal buyout

Kyrie Irving defends Lakers legend Kobe Bryant's legacy amid recent criticism

Kobe Bryant is widely considered one of the greatest players to ever pick up a basketball. There has been a recent shift in the discourse around him, however, as media members have attempted to tear down the Los Angeles Lakers legend's legacy. While the five-time NBA champion is unfortunately no longer here to defend his legacy, there have been countless of former teammates and opponents who have not tolerated the disrespect. Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving was the latest player to speak out on Bryant's behalf. "I'm not letting people come on and talk about Kobe like Kobe wasn't one of the best that not only played, but that came in as a 17-year-old against grown men," Nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving stated. "And by the time this man was 22 years old, he had a few championships and he was busting the best of the best (expletive). If y'all don't knock that (expletive) off. I'm talking to y'all at home, the (expletive) media talking heads, the ones that casually, casually throw names around. Bro, if you don't knock it off. You weren't like that." Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp "It's okay," Irving continued. "Not everybody can be Kobe. Not everybody could sit and wear those size shoes that he had. I'm not going down into detail about this because what's said on the internet and digital space is said. It's the internet. But when it comes to real respect and real recognizing real, this man Kobe Bean Bryant -- he's immortalized not just because of his basketball." "That's what I'm trying to tell y'all," Irving added. "He is way bigger because of his character, because of what we witnessed him go through. We didn't care about certain failures. The real Kobe fans didn't care about the failures. They didn't care about the naysayers. The real Kobe fans, the real Mamba fans that I'm talking to, didn't care about who he was competing with. We knew who (expletive) with Kobe and who didn't. I know who (expletive) with Kobe and who didn't." Bryant was often compared to Michael Jordan during his playing career, with many outlets claiming that the Chicago Bulls legend was the only player he trailed on the all-time list. There has been a push as of late to attempt to claim that he is outside of the top-five -- and in some cases, outside of the top-ten -- leading to pushback from his peers. The media's disrespect to the Lakers legend is nothing new. While he was often considered the best player in the league during his illustrious 20-year career, he won just one MVP award. Bryant passed away in 2020 and was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball of Fame in his first year of eligibility. More NBA:

Kyrie Irving reveals he asked Nets for release following COVID-19 vaccine suspension

Kyrie Irving's tenure with the Brooklyn Nets will likely be remembered for off-the-court incidents more than his dynamic play. The superstar guard was suspended to begin the 2021-22 season as he was unwilling to take the COVID-19 vaccine. He was suspended again the following season after tweeting an Amazon link to a film titled, "Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America", and his subsequent refusal to speak out against antisemitism. The two incidents led to Brooklyn not offering Irving a contract extension and him ultimately requesting a trade, which landed him with the Dallas Mavericks. While he was not traded until the trade deadline in 2023, the nine-time All-Star recently revealed that he asked to be released following his first suspension in 2021. "Even the people that I was in business with were pro-vaccine," Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving stated Tuesday. "I'm like, okay, look, that's fine, but just leave me the (expletive) out of this and let me go somewhere. I even told the Nets to release me. I said, 'yo, can you please just release me?' And, obviously, the money situation -- different situation, I'm (expletive) Kyrie. I say that very aware of my position, but they weren't just going to let me rock out." Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Although Irving's time with the organization was marred with controversy, he performed at an elite level when he was available. He averaged 27.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.7 blocks per game while shooting 48.9% from the field, 39.6% from three-point range and 90.9% from the free-throw line. Irving became the ninth member of the 50-40-90 club -- and just the fourth member to average at least 25.0 ppg -- in 2020-21. Brooklyn appeared to be legitimate title contenders that season, however, injuries to him and James Harden derailed their postseason run. More NBA:
