Putellas ready to lead Spain at Euro 2025 after injury sidelined her in 2022
Things are different now as Spain prepares for its campaign at Euro 2025 in Switzerland, with Putellas saying she's better than ever and ready to try to
lead Spain to its first title
in the competition.
'I'm not going to lie, it's a competition that I had in my sights after the injury I suffered just before the start of the last Euro,' she said. 'I've been preparing for this moment for a long time and I want to enjoy it.'
The two-time world player of the year was coming off one of her most impressive seasons when she injured her left knee during a practice session just days before Spain's opener at Euro 2022. It kept her out of action for nearly a year and dealt a blow to Spain's chances in the tournament, where it was ousted by England in the quarterfinals.
Putellas says she has improved a lot since then, even though other Spanish players such as Aitana Bonmatí — a two-time Ballon d'Or winner herself — have emerged as top stars.
'Without a doubt I'm a better Alexia,' she said. 'I know myself a lot better, I know my qualities, I know what I have been working on. In the end, all the suffering makes you evolve as a person and as an athlete. I've learned to manage the bad moments a lot better, as well as the good moments.'
Putellas has had another outstanding season and is again among the favorites for the world player of the year award. She thrived as Barcelona won the domestic treble and reached another Champions League final.
'The individual award is not something too important for me,' the 31-year-old Putellas said. 'But it would show that you've done something good and, from where I'm coming from — from the lowest of the lowest after the injury — it would give some value to the effort that it was put into the recovery. We'll see, but the most important thing is to win the Euro.'
Bonmatí won the last two world player of the year awards, and she is now the one enduring an ordeal as after falling ill with viral meningitis just a few days before Spain traveled to Switzerland for the tournament. Bonmatí was
released from the hospital
on Sunday to rejoin the national squad, but it still wasn't clear how much she would participate.
Spain will open its tournament Thursday against Portugal. It will also face Belgium and Italy in Group B. The nation's best result in the European tournament was a semifinals appearance in 1997.
Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup in 2023 and the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. It then just missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics, when it lost to Brazil in the semifinals and to Germany in the bronze-medal match.
'It's never easy to win a Euro,' Putellas said. 'We need to have maximum respect toward the other nations. There are great teams participating. But we have a lot of faith in our team, and if we give our best we will be that much closer to winning.'

Zakai Zeigler drops bid to play 5th college season, but his lawsuit against NCAA will continue
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Zakai Zeigler of Tennessee has dropped his bid for a federal judge to let him play a fifth season of Division I basketball in five years, but his lawsuit against the NCAA will continue, his attorneys said Tuesday. Last month, a judge denied Zeigler's request for a preliminary injunction that would allow him to return to the Volunteers. He appealed that ruling, but his attorneys voluntarily withdrew the appeal on Tuesday. 'While we had hoped to see Zakai back in orange and white, he's embracing the next chapter of his basketball career with optimism and resolve,' the law firm Litson PLLC said in a statement. 'We remain committed to pressing his case forward in the trial court, where the core legal issues remain very much alive.' The 5-foot-9 Zeigler was not selected in last week's NBA draft, but ESPN reported that the Detroit Pistons have signed him to their Summer League squad. Zeigler is one of several athletes suing the NCAA over its eligibility rules, arguing the ban on playing more than four seasons in a five-year window is a monopolistic practice that deprives athletes of the opportunity to earn name, image and likeness compensation. He argued in his lawsuit that he could earn between $2 million and as much as $4 million if he played another season at Tennessee. ___

No flirting with perfection for deGrom against O's this time. Just another solid start for Texas ace
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — There was no flirting with perfection this time for Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom against the Orioles. Just another impressive start for the two-time Cy Young Award winner in his comeback from elbow surgery. DeGrom struck out six on Tuesday night and limited the Orioles to two runs over six innings, on a homer by Gary Sánchez that just cleared the wall. The 37-year-old right-hander departed with a 7-2 lead, six days after he was perfect through six innings and took a no-hitter into the eighth in Baltimore. It was the 17th start this season for deGrom, and the 14th in a row he worked at least five innings while also allowing two runs or fewer. That extended his franchise record, and is the longest streak in the majors this season. Baltimore had a runner early this time, when Ryan O'Hearn drew a leadoff walk in the second inning. Cedric Mullins led off the third with a bunt single, though he was then thrown out trying to steal second base. Sanchez hit a two-run homer with two outs in the fourth. The 381-foot shot barely got over the wall in left, and came one pitch after his foul pop that dropped just beyond the extended reach of first baseman Josh Smith into the Rangers dugout. After missing most of his first two seasons with the Rangers because of his second Tommy John surgery, deGrom has thrown 101 1/3 innings this year, his first time over 100 in a season since he threw 204 in 2019 — when he won his second consecutive National League Cy Young while with the New York Mets. He threw only 41 innings combined in nine starts the past two seasons after signing his $185 million, five-year contract with Texas in free agency. Texas won all six starts deGrom made in his Texas debut before the end of April in 2023 before surgery, then he rehabbed most of last year before a 1.69 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 10 2/3 innings in three September starts. DeGrom made 12 starts during the COVID-19-shortened 60-game season in 2020, and had career-low 1.08 ERA over 92 innings in 2021 before missing the final three months with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow. ___
