Govt mulls revising laws to tackle online drug trade
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the matter has been discussed at the Cabinet Committee on Addressing Drug Issues, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"We see the need to review legal and regulatory aspects to improve enforcement capabilities," he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) i-Deen programme on Tuesday (Aug 5).
"This matter involves multiple agencies with different jurisdictions.

"For example, drug issues fall under the Home Ministry's purview, but if the sale occurs via online platforms, that falls under the jurisdiction of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.'
Saifuddin said one of the main challenges in tackling online drug sales is the use of various platforms that are difficult to monitor, especially when transactions occur outside official channels.

He described the trend as a growing threat, warning that easy access to drugs and discreet transactions make enforcement efforts more complicated.
"If the transactions happen on official e-commerce platforms, they are easier to detect.
"But if social media platforms are used, it becomes more challenging.
"This includes cases where delivery services like courier companies are used for small-scale drug distribution,' he added.

Fahmi warns against spreading false info in Zara Qairina case
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the police to ensure that investigations into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir are not disrupted by misinformation. Fahmi expressed concern over the widespread circulation of unverified content related to the case on social media, urging the public to refrain from sharing speculative or false information. "This is a reminder. Do not spread unverified content. We need to be cautious. Sometimes, the information we receive on social media cannot be confirmed. It could be fabricated, AI-generated, or otherwise misleading. "We must leave the matter to the authorities and the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC). Trust must be placed in the authorities to carry out their duties fairly and without protecting anyone." He said this to reporters when met at the PENTARAMA Homecoming and PENTARAMA X Kelab Malaysiaku programme in conjunction with the 2025 National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) celebrations at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bangsar here today. Fahmi also noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured the public that anyone found to be involved in the case will be brought to justice, and that no one will be shielded from legal action. Zara Qairina, 13, died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. She was rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious and critically injured in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar at 4 am the previous day. She was buried that night without a post-mortem. The case is currently being investigated after the A-GC returned the full preliminary investigation report into the girl's death to the police for further action and completion.

Trio suspected of feeding leftovers to homeless man released on police bail
SEREMBAN: Three teenagers believed to be involved in a viral video showing them giving leftovers to a homeless man recently were released on police bail yesterday. Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the boys, aged 14, 18 and 19, were brought from Johor to be remanded here on Tuesday for statement recording purposes. "A police report was lodged in this district," he told reporters here today. Hatta said the case was being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. It was reported that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had recorded the statements of the three boys, believed to be social media influencers, in connection with the circulation of the video. MCMC stated that the individuals were called in for questioning, and further investigations were conducted at the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters in Johor on Aug 5, where three mobile phones and three SIM cards were seized to assist the probe. It said that the video allegedly contained excessively obscene content, which had triggered widespread anger and condemnation from netizens and touched on the sensitivities of Malaysia's multicultural society. According to the statement, the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction. A Bernama check on TikTok found that several account holders had reposted the nearly two-minute video. In the video, three local young men are seen placing chicken bones in a rice packet and handing it to a homeless man sleeping on the pavement.
