Former Rangers star reaches out to Russell Martin to explain after tactics criticism ‘taken out of context'

Halliday, a pundit on the Open Goal podcast, gave a detailed analysis of why he thought Rangers struggled to break down Dundee in their 1-1 draw at Ibrox. The two-minute clip went viral on social media, but Halliday says he was "livid" as they had been speaking before about why they think Martin is going to get it right. In the viral clip, Halliday said: "This is Rangers against Dundee. Dundee played a 5-4-1, compact, really narrow, really tight, really deep. "Rangers were building with a flat back four and Rothwell so straightaway those five are out of the game because they are all in front. "You've got five attacking 11 players so how are you going to create chances and score goals when you're five v 11? "If you did 5 v 11 against kids in training you would struggle to score. "And do you know what they keep doing because there's nothing else on? They play a straight pass into Dessers and there is ****** nobody in the middle of the pitch." Martin responded to the comments at last Friday's press conference. He said: "We're cool. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. 'I like Andy, I regard him as a really good ex teammate and a person and I like him. Rangers Tribute Pub Vandalised in Violent Attack: Community Stands Strong "I'm sure at some point we'll have a coffee in the West End and we'll sit down and discuss how he wants to coach at some point. 'When you work in the media you have to give an opinion, right? 'So I have absolutely no problem with it at all. 'Although I never said we'd play with inverted full-backs so I have told him that.' Halliday, an ex-team-mate of Russell Martin's feels his comments were taken out of context as they had been saying previously how they felt he was going to get it right. Rangers have struggled so far this season dropping four points in the Premiership and an unconvincing performance in a 4-2 win over Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup. 4 He was asked about the reaction to the video on Monday. Andy Halliday told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: "I was very shocked to see a certain headline on Thursday morning. "In all seriousness, I've always really enjoyed doing the media side of it and I've always said I will be open and honest. "But I'll never personally attack individuals, so I was very disappointed to read a headline that was completely taken out of context. "Thankfully, I had a chat with the Rangers manager and the Motherwell manager and they both understood and all is good. "I've had lots of phone calls and a few certain people are off the Christmas card list. "Obviously he's an ex-team-mate of mine which I've kept in contact for a while now, when I first saw the headline I made sure I reached out to him to explain the situation. "His response was... I'm not sure what I thought it was but certainly what I hoped it was. "It was something that was taken out of context and he's taken it very well. Brendan Rodgers loves Jamie Vardy as four words in first meeting suggest Celtic reunion with former 'rascal' could be on

Vardy is reportedly keen on a move to Celtic and Rodgers wasn't slow to talk him up ion their first introduction at Leicester Brendan Rodgers waxed lyrical about Jamie Vardy when he inherited the striker at Leicester City. ‌ So it's perhaps no surprise if Vardy is indeed "desperate" for a move to Celtic. ‌ At 38, the Leicester legend is coming to the end of his career, but he can still shift and has a goal record players have his age would kill for. ‌ And you get the impression he's the type of character that would thrive in the Glasgow gold fish bowl. As to whether he's Rodgers ' cup of tea, we already have an emphatic answer. The Irishman ditched the Hoops in favour of the Foxes back in 2019 not long after Vardy had penned a new deal. And Rodgers wasted no time in telling Vardy why he was exactly the type of player he wanted in his ranks. Whether that's still true six years on as Celtic scramble to strengthen before the end of the transfer window and a crucial Champions League playoff clash with Kairat Almaty, time will tell. But Rodgers was smitten with the one-time "rascal" with just enough devilment to get the Hoops boss' juices flowing. ‌ "When I first arrived, I met them after the Brighton game and I was walking around the changing room shaking all of their hands,' said Rodgers. 'I shook [Vardy's] hand and said to him: 'I'm glad you're here!' ‌ 'He's just right up my street in terms of devilment and running and hunger to score. From that, we've struck up a strong relationship. 'He knows where the line is. He's a great boy. I love his energy. I love his passion. He actually loves football, which helps. He knows the game. 'I was just interested to be able to work with him, to see someone so focused. ‌ 'He is always available for training, which is so important. He trains every single day, which tells you how he is looking after himself, with his diet, his nutrition. 'He continually wants to get better. That's a joy for me. We're trying to create an environment every day for players to improve. He thankfully is one who has improved. ‌ 'He's matured as well. He's 32, he's grown up a little bit from those days when he was a rascal. He has real desire to score goals, to work, to be the best he can and to succeed. In this type of culture, that's perfect. 'He has a smile everyday, he has fun, but he knows when he's working as well. In the games, you can see what he's taking from training. He's such a threat. 'We talk about his numbers and his efficiency, it's absolutely phenomenal.'

Andy Halliday 'livid' at response to Rangers criticism

Appearing on Open Goal, the Motherwell midfielder went through Russell Martin's set-up from his side's 1-1 draw with Dundee. In that show, Halliday said: 'Dundee played a 5-4-1, really compact, really tight, really deep and narrow. Rangers went with a flat back four and they had five players attacking eleven players. How are you going to create chances and score goals if you're five v eleven? 'You would struggle to score against kids in training if you were five v eleven. And do you know what they keep doing because there's nothing else on? They play a straight pass into Cyriel Dessers and when they lose the ball there's f***** nobody in the middle of the pitch. 'People talk about Rangers having inverted full backs but that's a pure myth.' This led to some media outlets claiming Halliday told Martin that he didn't know what he was doing. Martin responded on Friday afternoon, where he cooled any talk around the subject by saying he and Halliday would chat it over a coffee in Glasgow's west end. Now, Halliday has reacted to the clip that went viral last week. He said: "On Thursday morning I was genuinely livid. I didn't know whether my head was gone or whether I was angry. I didn't know where I was. "Just how blown out of context it was, it was mental man. "He [Martin] could've just seen it on social media and not even watched the clip, and believed that I said 'What you doing, Russ?' Read more: "Then 'Halliday lambasts Russell Martin's tactics,' after we'd been saying for 15 minutes I think he's going to get it right. I mean f*****g hell man. "Even after calming down, I say calming down, after a few phone calls and finding out what's what, I'd still not heard back from him because they're obviously training. "I just wanted to make sure that either he'd seen the full thing or he's not taken it the wrong way. "His response meant that we could then laugh and joke about it."
