JDT Trounce Selangor 3-0, To Lift Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup For The 10th Time
SPORTS ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) continue to excel in a class of their own after defending the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup champion title for the eighth consecutive time by defeating Selangor FC 3-0 in the Charity Shield match here, tonight. The victory in the opening match of the Malaysia League (M-League) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Iskandar Puteri also gave JDT three points, thus enabling the Southern Tigers to get the perfect start in their mission to win the Super League for the 12th time in a row. In JDT's first competitive match under their new Spanish coach, Xisco Munoz tonight, new striker Jairo Da Silva from Brazil, defender Eddy Israfilov and agile winger Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi each made their name as scorers in each half. Da Silva, a former striker for Cyprus club Pafos FC, punished the negligence of Selangor's defence as early as the first minute when he quickly found space to finish off Jonathan Silva's cross from the left, putting JDT ahead 1-0. Selangor under coach Kinoshi Katsuhito, who rarely create dangerous moves, wasted a golden opportunity to equalise in the 42nd minute when striker Chrigor Moraes failed to beat goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi Mohamed in a one on one situation. Continuing the second half, Selangor goalkeeper Kalamullah Al Hafiz Mat Rowi performed brilliantly when denying two close-range attempts by JDT, each by Jaoa Figuiredo in the 51st minute and substitute striker Bergson Da Silva in the 62nd minute. However, he was beaten for the second time when Israfilov jumped high to head in Arif Aiman's corner kick for JDT's second goal in the 64th minute, which delighted about 32,777 spectators in the stadium. Arif Aiman completed JDT's stylish victory with a third goal after he, who was not well guarded, made a run into the penalty box and fired a powerful shot that Kalamullah failed to save in the 73rd minute. The 3-0 score remained until the final whistle and was enough to allow JDT to win the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup for the 10th time since the 2015 season.

Slingshot contests draw crowds at Kelantan PMR 2025
KOTA BHARU: The humble slingshot, locally known as bidas or lastik, has become a major attraction at the Kelantan MADANI Rakyat programme 2025. Kubang Bemban Slingshot Club advisor Azizan Mat Ariffin said the contests, held in makeshift rings, have grown in popularity over the years. 'Contests take place in various villages during mornings, afternoons, and even at night, especially on Fridays and Saturdays,' he told Bernama. He added that slingshot contests are now recognised as a recreational sport under official categories. 'This sport reflects a healthy lifestyle and is open to everyone, from veterans to children,' he said. Azizan noted that Kelantan stands out as a state where slingshot sports are particularly active. The sport is also therapeutic and has drawn significant interest from youths, he explained. Visitor Mohd Fadzil Harun, 42, travelled from Pasir Mas to participate in the open contest. 'I've loved slingshots since childhood, but this event is special because of the festive atmosphere,' he said. Nurul Aqilah Mohd Nor, 27, from Bachok, tried slingshot for the first time and found it challenging yet satisfying. 'If there are more programmes like this, I'll bring my family,' she said. The three-day Kelantan PMR 2025 event concludes tomorrow. - Bernama

Aaron Chia eyes all-Malaysian semi-finals at 2025 World Championships
MALAYSIA'S top men's doubles player, Aaron Chia, is dreaming of an all-Malaysian line-up in the men's doubles semi-finals of the 2025 World Championships in Paris. The tournament will be held from Aug 25 to 31 at the Adidas Arena. Aaron, who partners Soh Wooi Yik, believes the scenario is not impossible given the strong performances by top Malaysian pairs this year. These include world No. 3 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and world No. 22 Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King. Should that dream come true, the 28-year-old said it would be especially meaningful as the semi-finals will take place just a day before Malaysia's 68th National Day. 'I think Wei Chong-Kai Wun and Wan Arif-Roy King also have a chance of making the semi-finals. If we have four Malaysian pairs there, we can celebrate National Day early,' he told reporters after a training session. Aaron-Wooi Yik, currently ranked world No. 2, are Malaysia's most successful pair this year. They have won three titles, including the Badminton Asia Championships, Thailand Open, and Singapore Open. They also finished runners-up at the Malaysia Masters and China Open. Wei Chong-Kai Wun have captured the Indonesia Masters and Malaysia Masters titles this season. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin and Wan Arif-Roy King each secured a title at the India Open and Macau Open respectively. Aaron is hopeful that the world championships venue will once again bring him good fortune. He defended his Olympic bronze medal at the same location during the 2024 Olympic Games. Now, he aims to recreate the magic of their 2022 world title triumph in Tokyo. 'We played at the same arena last year. I hope we can perform well this time — even better,' he said. In August 2022, Aaron-Wooi Yik made history as Malaysia's first badminton world champions. They defeated Indonesia's veteran pair Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan 21-19, 21-14. Aaron added that their current focus is on maintaining consistency ahead of the Paris showdown. He identified world No. 1 pair Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae as the biggest threat to the competition. The in-form South Koreans have already claimed five titles this year, including the prestigious All England in March. - Bernama
