Spain's Aena net profit up 10.5% after airline passenger traffic grows
Spanish airport operator Aena 's first-half net profit rose 10.5 per cent from the same period a year ago, it said on Wednesday, boosted by increased passenger traffic in the world's second-most visited country after France.Aena, the world's largest airport operator in terms of passenger numbers, made a net profit of €893.8 million ($1.03 billion) in the first six months of the year, just below the €904.2 million average of analysts' forecasts in an LSEG survey.Passenger traffic increased 4.5 per cent year-on-year, with 150.6 million passengers passing through Aena's terminals in Spain during the first six months of the year, helping to boost the company's revenues by 9 per cent to €2.9 billion. The company also reported traffic growth of over 5 per cent at the airports it operates in Brazil and Britain. At Spanish airports, Aena said that international traffic increased 6.5 per cent in the first half of the year, while domestic traffic rose 0.4 per cent.Around 59 per cent of passengers arrived from Europe. Ryanair, the airline with the largest market share at 22 per cent, carried 6 per cent more passengers during this period. The number of tourists to Spain has provoked opposition from some local residents, causing the authorities to seek to ease the strain, while continuing to reap the economic benefits. Although Spain expects to break last year's record of 94 million international tourists, the country's new strategy involves attracting foreign tourists to places other than Spain's most popular beaches. It is also seeking to appeal to more long-haul tourists, who tend to spend more.Aena's commercial revenues grew by 10 per cent, driven by rents from duty-free shops, car rentals and passenger lounge services. Its income from flight-related businesses rose by 6 per cent. Aena has approved a 6.5 per cent increase in fees next year for airlines that will have to pay a maximum of €11.03 per passenger as the company aims to partly fund the expansion of the main airports in Madrid and Barcelona to accommodate more flights from Asia and the Americas.

SoftBank Group posts $2.87 billion net profit for April-June quarter
Japanese technology investor SoftBank Group logged a net profit of 421.8 billion yen ($2.87 billion) for the April-June quarter. The result compared with a net loss of 174.3 billion yen for the same period a year earlier and the 127.6 billion yen average profit from three analyst estimates compiled by LSEG. The Vision Fund investment unit posted an investment gain of 726.8 billion yen ($4.94 billion). The results mark SoftBank's second consecutive quarter of profit and follow its first annual profit in four years when it was helped by a strong performance by its telecom holdings and higher valuations for its later-stage startups. The results will be welcomed by investors as SoftBank has embarked on its biggest spending spree since the launch of its Vision Funds in 2017 and 2019, this time making mammoth investments in artificial intelligence companies. Investors and analysts are awaiting updates on how these investments will be financed, the timeline for returns to materialise and whether assets will be sold to fund the new projects. SoftBank is leading a $40 billion funding round for ChatGPT maker OpenAI. SoftBank has until the end of the year to fund its $22.5 billion portion, although the remainder has been subscribed, according to a source familiar with the matter. It is also leading the financing for the Stargate project: a $500 billion scheme to develop data centres in the United States, part of its effort to position itself as the "organiser of the industry," founder Masayoshi Son said in June. SoftBank has yet to release details on what kinds of returns its financing of the Stargate project could generate. The extent of third-party investment will determine what other financing tools, such as bank loans and debt issuance, it may have to deploy. In July, SoftBank raised $4.8 billion by selling off a portion of its holding in T-Mobile.

McDonald's global sales top estimates as affordable meal options boost demand
McDonald's second-quarter global comparable sales beat Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, as affordable meal bundles and promotions drew in budget-conscious diners looking to stretch their dollars amid economic uncertainty. Its shares rose 2.3% in early trading as strong demand in the U.S. and international markets powered a 3.8% rise in global same-store sales, above expectations of a 2.4% rise, according to data compiled by LSEG. Fast-food chains have seen competition heat up as companies such as McDonald's, Domino's Pizza and Taco Bell owner Yum Brands double down on value meals to counter a slowdown in demand, mainly among the lower-income households. To improve sales, McDonald's launched a limited-time Happy Meal offer for kids and adults tied to the "Minecraft" Movie promotion in April. In May, it introduced McCrispy Chicken Strips as a permanent menu item. These promotions are in addition to the $5 meal deal and the buy-one, add-one for $1 offers launched last year. CEO Chris Kempczinski said re-engaging the low-income consumer is "critical", as they typically visit its restaurants more frequently than middle- and high-income groups. "This bifurcated consumer base is why we remain cautious about the overall near-term health of the U.S. consumer," he said. Menu innovation and promotions had also helped Domino's report upbeat U.S. same-store sales , while weakening demand hurt sales at Yum Brands and Chipotle Mexican Grill. For the second quarter, customer visits to McDonald's outperformed the wider quick-service restaurant category, data from foot traffic tracking firm showed. "While rivals like Yum Brands and Chipotle struggled with consumer pullback, McDonald's played to its strengths by leaning into value, nostalgia and limited-time promotions," eMarketer analyst Zak Stambor said. Comparable sales in U.S., McDonald's biggest market, grew 2.5%, compared with a 0.7% decline a year ago. Sales in its business segment where restaurants are operated by local partners, jumped 5.6%, led by Japan, while it rose 4% in international markets, on demand recovery in the UK, Canada and France. Adjusted net income of $3.19 per share exceeded estimates of $3.15.

DoorDash forecast third-quarter gross merchandise value above Wall Street expectations after topping estimates on Wednesday, betting on robust demand for food and grocery deliveries through its platform. The company's offers and promotions, particularly in its US and international markets for members, have attracted budget-conscious consumers seeking value to its online services. DoorDash expects gross merchandise value, a measure of the total dollar value of orders placed through its platform, to be between $24.2 billion and $24.7 billion for the current quarter, above estimates of $23.73 billion, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. The San Francisco-headquartered company's shares were up nearly 5% in extended trading after the company also topped estimates for second-quarter revenue, gross merchandise value and adjusted profit. Its stock has risen 52% so far this year. Rival UberEats' parent Uber also forecast a strong third quarter earlier in the day, banking on robust demand for ride-hailing and deliveries. Total revenue of $3.28 billion for the reported three-month period also beat estimates of $3.16 billion.
