The London-born film star, 67, is known for his versatile acting style having portrayed a range of figures, from former prime minister Sir Winston Churchill to Sex Pistols member Sid Vicious.
He started out on the stage and performed in productions at the York Theatre Royal, which he recently returned to in a staging of the Samuel Beckett play Krapp's Last Tape.

Late last year he won the performance of the year gong at the 63rd Rose d'Or Awards for his role as Lamb, an unhygienic, ill-mannered individual, who has 'no vanity' and 'doesn't give an eff', according to Sir Gary.
Born on March 21 1958, a young Sir Gary toyed with the idea of becoming a musician but changed his mind after watching a Malcolm McDowell film.
He was turned down by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada), but gained a place studying acting at the Rose Bruford College, which he graduated from in 1979.
He became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), starring in productions that included 1985's Abel And Cain at London's Almeida Theatre and first came to public attention in films including Remembrance (1982) and Sid And Nancy (1986), which saw him play the notorious punk rock star.

Other notable roles included Ludwig van Beethoven in Immortal Beloved (1994) and Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in The Fifth Element (1997).
His directorial debut, a semi-autobiographical piece about his childhood titled Nil By Mouth, was released in 1997 and lauded as a brilliant but gut-wrenchingly emotional film.

The acclaimed film earned him Baftas for outstanding British film and best original screenplay in 1998.
Across the noughties and into the 2010s he appeared in some of the Harry Potter films as Harry's godfather, Sirius Black, and also starred as Gotham City Police lieutenant Jim Gordon, in Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
He was lauded for his role playing George Smiley in 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which saw him earn Bafta and Oscar nods.
He was unable to secure the leading actor gongs, however, until his role in The Darkest Hour which saw him sweep the 2018 awards season, winning an Academy Award, Bafta and more.
Upon winning his Oscar, for playing wartime leader Sir Winston, Sir Gary appeared emotional and thanked 'the Academy and its members for this glorious prize' as well as his colleagues, his wife and family in a lengthy speech.
Sir Gary has three sons, Alfie whom he shares with ex-wife Lesley Manville, and Gulliver and Charlie, whose mother is his former wife Donya Fiorentino.
The actor, whose sister is former EastEnders actress Laila Morse, has been married to Gisele Schmidt since 2017 and was previously married to Hollywood actress Uma Thurman and singer Alexandra Edenborough.

Sean Connery turned down role he said was 'disgusting' which other actor won Oscar for

Sean Connery turned down a number of iconic roles during his career, including one which won the actor who took on the role an Oscar, as he found it 'disgusting' The iconic actor and silver screen legend Sean Connery once rejected a part that might have landed him a Best Actor Oscar, finding it "disgusting". Connery, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 90, left behind an astonishing array of work, not least his portrayal of James Bond and an Oscar-winning role in The Untouchables. Even so, among the various offers he declined were parts that went on to become some of the greatest roles in film history, including one particular character who featured in a film which won five Oscars. Despite turning down the proposition due to its "disgusting" source material, there's a consensus among fans that this was the right decision by the 'Goldfinger' actor. ‌ ‌ The concern amongst devotees of the Bond legend was that Connery would have reshaped the character too much in his own image instead of adhering to the required tone of a thriller. According to a post on the r/TodayILearned subreddit: "Of the various roles Sean Connery turned down, they included Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, John Hammond in Jurassic Park, Morpheus in The Matrix, Dumbledore in Harry Potter, and Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. Of the Hannibal part in particular, Connery felt it was too 'disgusting'." Jonathan Demme, the director of The Silence of the Lambs, confirmed that there was a considerable effort exerted to secure Connery for the film, but he ultimately rejected the offer. Demme recalled: "Sean Connery was the only other person I thought could be amazing for this. Connery has that fierce intelligence and also that serious physicality. I love Tony Hopkins, but Sean Connery could be amazing. "Word came back shortly that he thought it was disgusting and wouldn't dream of playing the part. So, great, now we can go to Tony Hopkins." Movie buffs were relieved Connery snubbed the part as there was speculation about how he would interpret the role of the nefarious cannibal, Hannibal Lecter. ‌ Anthony Hopkins, who embraced the character in three films, earned an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in 'Silence of the Lambs' in 1994. One social media user wrote: "What's funny is that while may have passed on them, the actors who took them made them into iconic performances." ‌ Another added: "There are two types of actors: those who transform into their characters, and those who transform the characters into themselves. "Connery is the latter. He didn't transform into James Bond, Ramierz from Highlander, or the submarine commander from The Hunt for Red October; he was just Sean Connery in each of those roles. All those roles he turned down would've just been Sean Connery." A third shared: "That's my takeaway every time this comes up. He passed on some iconic roles, but they probably wouldn't have become iconic in the first place had he NOT passed on them. "I try and imagine him in those roles and it just doesn't fit. Sean Connery had star power but he's not the kind of actor who can do anything and become anyone, and that's fine."

Yung Filly update sees star face two new sexual assault charges

Yung Filly - whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos - was charged with rape and other offenses over an alleged sexual assault on a woman in Australia last year British rapper, Yung Filly, is facing two new sexual assault charges relating to the assault of a woman while he was on tour in Australia. Filly - whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos - was charged with rape and other offences over an alleged sexual assault on a woman in the country last year. In March, he pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, one of strangulation and four counts of sexual penetration without consent. However, according to court documents filed on Friday, the YouTuber, 29, faces two new counts of sexual penetration without consent, and no plea has been entered for them. ‌ ‌ The incident is alleged to have taken place on 28 September. Filly had been touring Australia at the time of the alleged offences. Filly appeared at Perth Magistrates Court for an initial hearing on October 10, 2024 where he was granted conditional bail. The bail terms stated that he did not discuss the case on social media, or contact the alleged victim. The rapper appeared in Perth Magistrates Court for a second time on March 11, 2025, and pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was told to appear in the District Court of Western Australia on July 13. On June 13, two new charges of sexual penetration without consent were filed against Filly. During a court hearing in November, the British-Colombian saw his bail request put on hold until later that day. ABC Australia covered the story, noting that Perth barrister Seamus Rafferty SC is representing the entertainer. Rafferty commented on the denied bail, stating: "This has already made headlines. Given the nature of social media, the nature of people jumping on bandwagons, given the nature of (the) power imbalance between the parties." ‌ A TikTok video from Perth's Bar1 Nightclub went viral last year, showcasing Filly – who has appeared in Channel 4's The Great Celebrity Bake Off – performing at the venue. Meanwhile, in a sombre contrast, images depicting injuries allegedly sustained by a woman were presented to the court. "No ordinary person can consent in those circumstances," stated the prosecutor in reference to the gruesome photos, adding: "Across her body is a history of violent acts, ... we say those photos and what is alleged is beyond the pale, beyond what could be considered to be a consensual act." Filly, who was born in Colombia and moved to London aged two as a refugee with his mum and sister began his YouTube career in 2013 before releasing his debut single Take Time in 2017. He went onto host shows Hot Property and Don't Scream on BBC Three and has also appeared in Soccer Aid and The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off. Filly's 10-day trial is scheduled to start on 20 July 2026.
