Former Canadien Chris Nilan loved Josh Anderson's bench fight
Chris Nilan was in the stands at the Bell Centre for the Canadiens' 6-3 win over the Washington Capitals in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series Friday night.
Not surprisingly, the Canadiens' all-time leader in penalty minutes with 2,248 loved it when Josh Anderson and the Capitals' Tom Wilson got into a fight at the end of the second period and ended up in the Washington bench.
'Oh yeah, that looked fun,' Nilan said with a chuckle Sunday while getting ready to attend Game 4 Sunday night at the Bell Centre. (6:30 p.m., CBC, SN, TVA Sports). 'The door opened and they ended up on the bench. That never would have happened if that wasn't the case. The whole Capitals team has to leave the bench and go on the ice to get to their dressing room ... so what do you expect the Canadiens players to do? Go to their room? So there's going to be a confrontation.
'I was in the stands and I could not sit down,' Nilan added. 'I was on edge, I was up and down with the fans. People were hugging me ... it was incredible. It was the most electric, passionate atmosphere I've ever been in at a sporting event. It really was. It was unbelievable. People have waited so long for these kids to come around and they finally have. Hopefully they keep it going.'
Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reported that the NHL told management of the Canadiens and Capitals to be more careful during warm-ups, TV timeouts and at the end of periods in Game 4 because the league didn't like what happened in Game 3.
The fight between Anderson and Miller brought back memories of the 'Brawl in the Hall' Nilan was involved in at Boston Garden on Nov. 20, 1986. Nilan received a fighting major and a game misconduct at 15:09 of the second period of a game the Canadiens would end up winning 3-1.
Nilan was being escorted off the ice by a linesman and had to go through a door beside the Bruins bench to get to the Canadiens' locker room. Ken Linseman stood up on the Bruins bench and was staring at Nilan.
'You had to stand up to it in there (at Boston Garden) or just put your tail between your legs and go home,' Nilan said.
'Listen, I'm an idiot if I trust Ken Linseman,' he added. 'He stood up on the bench, turned and was facing me. I was looking straight ahead and saw him out of the corner of my eye. I was like, I ain't waiting, and that's when I threw the punch and then all hell broke loose.'
A brawl ensued in the hallway leading to the locker rooms.
'I had him down in the hallway and was giving it to him and he was freaking scratching and clawing me,' Nilan said. 'He was trying to scratch my face and he did scratch me, the little rat.'
Nilan and Linseman have since become good friends and Nilan had him as a guest last year on his Raw Knuckles Podcast to talk about the Brawl in the Hall. Nilan even sells sweatshirts on his website with 'Brawl in the Hall — Knuckles vs. The Rat' written on the front, along with the date and location.
'He's a great guy ... he's a really good guy,' Nilan said about Linseman. 'He's been a successful businessman in life. He's a really sharp kid ... he's done well.'
Nilan loves what Anderson has brought to the Canadiens this season and during the playoffs after what was an off-season for him last year.
'I give Josh Anderson all the marks in the world for what he has done,' Nilan said. 'We saw what he did to the Rangers' Jacob Trouba this season ... he beat the doors off him.
'Here's what I'll say about Josh,' Nilan added. 'He's been an incredible leader. The previous year he had an off-year and I don't think people realize just how difficult it is for a veteran to be part of a rebuild and come every day thinking, I'm going to take everyone by storm, when you're losing all the time. It's not fun. So he had an off-year. But then he got his s--- together and he's bounced back big-time. He's been an awesome leader. That whole line with (Brendan) Gallagher and (Christian) Dvorak ... they've all stepped up in their leadership roles. Josh Anderson, I love him as a player — always have.'
Nilan also loves Arber Xhekaj and was very happy to see head coach Martin St. Louis put the 6-foot-4, 240-pound defenceman in the lineup for Game 3 after he was a healthy scratch for the first two games.

'Listen, there was a lot of pressure on that kid,' Nilan said. 'They bring him in the lineup, they're down 2-0, and it's like: 'Don't make any mistakes.' I'm sure that's in his head. He wants to go play and he wants to bring some aggression and stand up to these guys and I thought he did a great job chirping them in pregame warm-up. He tried to get involved physically.
'Marty said Wilson ain't going to play any different with Xhekaj in the lineup ... I beg to differ,' Nilan added. 'Plus, Wilson wasn't the only one in the first two games ... everybody on the Capitals was taking shots at the Habs. Now, it's like screw you. With Arber in there guys know that their backs are covered. It's a big plus to have him in the lineup.
'I think they've kind of put Washington on notice.'

Who is Victoria Mboko, the teenage tennis sensation lighting up the Canadian Open?
Tennis There were Grand Slam champions. There were tour veterans chasing one more shot at glory. There were fans thronging over the railings at Montreal's IGA Stadium. And then there was Victoria Mboko. At just 18, she'll step onto centre court on Thursday (6 p.m., SN, TVA Sports) chasing her first Women's Tennis Association (WTA) title and aiming to become the first Canadian to win the tournament since Bianca Andreescu in 2019. Standing in her way is four-time Grand Slam champion and world No. 49 Naomi Osaka. It's been a fearless run. Ranked No. 85 before the tournament began, Mboko has stormed into the final as a wild card, knocking out Kimberly Birrell, Sofia Kenin, Marie Bouzkova, Coco Gauff, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Elena Rybakina along the way. Who is this breakout star? Born on Aug. 26, 2006, to Congolese parents in Charlotte, N.C., Mboko moved to Toronto with her family when she was two months old. She grew up in a tennis household. Her three older siblings played, and she picked up a racquet at age three. She made her WTA debut in 2022 at age 15 and won her first International Tennis Federation title that year in Saskatoon, successfully defending it in 2023. This year, Mboko reached the third round of the French Open in her Grand Slam debut, secured her first main-draw win at Wimbledon and broke into the top 100 before receiving a wild-card entry for the Canadian Open. What tournaments has she won? ITF W25 Saskatoon Challenger – 2022 ITF W60 Saskatoon Challenger – 2023 ITF W35 Darmstadt, Germany – 2024 ITF W35 Le Lamentin (Martinique), France – January 2025 ITF W35 Petit-Bourg (Guadeloupe), France – January 2025 ITF W75 Rome, Ga., United States – January 2025 ITF W35 Manchester, U.K. – February 2025 ITF W75 Porto Women's Indoor, Portugal – March 2025 What is her playing style? Mboko is a right-hander with a two-handed backhand and a game built on power. Tennis Canada's head of women's tennis, Noëlle van Lottum, told TSN she sees Mboko's style as a blend of Serena Williams and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Her first serve is a major weapon, reaching up to 120 mph. She's fired more than 40 aces in Montreal so far. However, her second serve can still wobble. She double-faulted 11 times against Rybakina in the semifinal. But her greatest strength might be her composure. In the semis, she fought off a match point and played through a sore wrist after a hard fall early in the third set. But she found a way to win. Earlier in the tournament, she spoke about staying calm under pressure: 'The human reaction is always to kind of tense up and act out,' she said. 'But I think if I project calmness and relax, I will suddenly also have the same thing in my head.' What is the tennis world saying? Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard said Mboko's rise hasn't come as a surprise. 'Anyone who knew her in Canadian tennis would not be surprised. She has so much power to her game. I remember practising with her when she was 14 or 15 years old and she was smacking forehands and bowling me off the court, so we all knew she would be really good,' the Westmount native said. 'She seems to be handling the moment really well, taking it all in her stride and using it as motivation.' Legendary coach Rick Macci, who has worked with Maria Sharapova and Serena and Venus Williams, was just as glowing. In a post on X, he wrote: 'She is the real deal. Has the juice off the ground and loves to pound. Produces high-level quality on the run and at 18 her career has just begun.' 'Top 5 is down the street,' he added. What lies ahead? Standing between Mboko and a fairy-tale title is 27-year-old Osaka. She's a former world No. 1, but is unseeded here after taking maternity leave. The two have never played each other. But whatever happens Thursday evening, a new chapter is beginning for Mboko. She is set to break into the world's top 40 and could crack the top 30 with a win. Helping guide her is former world No. 3 and Wimbledon finalist Nathalie Tauziat, who coached Mboko as a junior and rejoined her team this year. Tauziat has warned against letting early success derail long-term focus: 'When we succeed, we earn more money, more people are around us, life changes. Life changes and that's normal, but you have to manage that to maintain the composure that she has today.' For now, Mboko is still soaking in the moment. 'The words cannot even describe how I feel right now,' she told Sportsnet's Danielle Michaud on court after winning her semifinal. 'If you'd told me last year I'd be in the Canadian Open final, I'd have said you were crazy. I'm truly a believer that you can do anything you aspire to do. The sky's always the limit.'
