PAS's call for PM to take leave ‘baseless', says PKR Youth

PETALING JAYA : PKR Youth has dismissed PAS's call for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to take a leave of absence, saying it was 'baseless' and politically irresponsible.
PKR Youth vice-chief Nabil Halimi said such a demand would only distract the government from its duties and does not support national stability.
'Anwar should continue leading to ensure there is stable governance, which will in turn attract investments and drive development,' he said in a statement.
Nabil praised Anwar's willingness to face legal proceedings, calling it a reflection of integrity and a commitment to the government's reform agenda, which prioritises transparency and accountability.
He reaffirmed PKR Youth's support for the rule of law, stating that no one is above the legal process.
Nabil also rejected claims of executive interference, emphasising the importance of maintaining the separation of powers between the executive, legislature, and judiciary.
He went on to criticise PAS for politicising the issue, stating that it could erode public trust in national institutions.
Nabil urged young Malaysians to support ongoing reform efforts and reject attempts to undermine national stability.
Earlier, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari urged Anwar to take temporary leave ahead of a civil suit filed by his former research assistant, Yusoff Rawther. The case is scheduled to begin on June 16.
He said Anwar had a moral obligation and political responsibility to take temporary leave to avoid any perception of bias and to protect the country's image.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday dismissed Anwar's application to refer eight legal questions arising from a civil suit filed by Yusoff to the Federal Court.
The prime minister wanted the apex court to rule whether Articles 5(1), 8(1), 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from the suit Yusoff filed four years ago.
Justice Roz Mawar Rozain said the questions posed by the prime minister failed to cross the threshold set out in Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964.
Roz Mawar said the trial of Yusoff's suit will begin at 9am on June 16 as scheduled, rejecting an application by Anwar's lawyer, Alan Wong, for a stay pending appeal.
Yusoff, a grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, claimed he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018.
He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit.

In a separate case, Azam clarified that the statement from renowned fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie was recorded yesterday in Jakarta, not Bali, as previously reported. It was earlier reported that the MACC investigation team would be in Jakarta for two days to record the statement of the 39-year-old designer, who is Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's former son-in-law, in connection with an investigation into asset ownership involving the former prime minister. Anwar: Govt may set up TVET commission
MELAKA: The government is mulling the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students. "I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs. "With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Finance Ministry, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions." Anwar said this when opening the National TVET Day 2025 celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, here today.

(EPA Images pic) HANOI : Vietnam's National Assembly on Thursday approved plans to merge provinces and cities, slashing nearly 80,000 state jobs, as part of major reforms to the communist country's administrative structure. Lawmakers voted to reduce the country's 63 provincial and city administrations to just 34, as the government looks to radically cut state expenditure. The move comes after the government cut the number of ministries and agencies from 30 to 22 in February, resulting in 23,000 job losses. Vietnam's top leader To Lam has said the drastic restructuring of the country's governance is needed if it is to achieve 'fast, stable and sustainable development'. In Thursday's vote, the assembly – a rubber-stamp body in a one-party system – approved the government's plans by 461 ballots to one, with three abstentions. Only 11 provinces and cities are left unchanged by the reform, with the rest all merged. Interior minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra said it amounted to the 'biggest ever revolution since the country was founded' in 1945, state media reported on Wednesday. '79,339 officials will have to be streamlined, quitting their jobs or submitting for early retirement following the merge,' Tra told the National Assembly. One provincial official told AFP he was 'shocked and sad' as he will have to leave his position after more than 30 years of public service. 'I may receive some billion dong in compensation, but I am not happy,' the 58-year-old communist party member said, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'I don't know what to do now though I think I am still completely fit for work.' The streamlined administrative bodies will be expected to 'shift from passive management to active service to the people', said Lam, the Communist Party general secretary and most powerful figure in the country. 'I think the merge is good for all and I fully support it,' said Nguyen Thang Loi, 52, from northern Thai Binh province, which is being merged. 'Though I feel really sad as the name of my native province, which has lasted generations, will now be gone. It's so weird to say I come from Hung Yen,' Loi told AFP. According to the government, all cities and provinces will announce their new leadership on June 30 and start full operation at the beginning of July. In the next few days, the National Assembly will vote on an amended national constitution, under which the country's three-level administrative structure of province, district and commune will be reduced to two. The middle district level will be eliminated and the commune level expanded.
