WHO Pandemic treaty: A shared commitment, need greater global cooperation, says PM Modi
New Delhi: The historic WHO Pandemic Treaty adopted today is a shared commitment that requires greater global cooperation, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering, via videoconferencing, he highlighted that this year's theme, 'One World for Health,' aligns with India's vision for global health.
After three years of negotiations, the Agreement was adopted by consensus by member countries of the WHO at the ongoing 78th World Health Assembly. India is also a signatory to this treaty, which has been in talks since the Covid-19 outbreak, which killed millions of people worldwide. The treaty aims to bridge global healthcare gaps and inequities in case of future pandemics.
'The WHO Pandemic Treaty is a shared commitment to fighting future pandemics through greater global cooperation,' said PM Modi, while extending his congratulations on the successful negotiations of the treaty.
While the Global South is particularly impacted by several health challenges, PM Modi stated that 'India's approach provides replicable, scalable, and sustainable models'.
He also expressed India's willingness to share its learnings and best practices with the world, especially with the Global South.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of building a healthy planet while ensuring that no one is left behind.
'The future of a healthy world depends on inclusion, an integrated vision, and collaboration," he said.
Further, PM Modi also highlighted India's health reforms ranging from Ayushman Bharat -- the world's largest health insurance scheme, which covers 580 million people and provides free treatment -- to the increased role of technology in improving health outcomes, as well as the rise in Government Health Expenditure, leading to a significant decline in Out-of-Pocket Expenditure of the citizens.
'The health of the world depends on how well we care for the most vulnerable', underlined the Prime Minister.
Emphasising India's role as the birthplace of Yoga, the Prime Minister also extended an invitation to all countries for the upcoming 11th International Day of Yoga in June. The theme this year is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'.

State logs 58 new Cov cases, 2 of them kids
Kolkata: Bengal on Friday logged 58 fresh Covid cases over the past 24 hours, taking the active case tally across the state to 596. At least two kids were among the new cases, with one of them needing admission to a PICU at a private hospital. People with Covid-19 symptoms should watch Rath Yatra at home: Official
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Those with symptoms of Covid-19 should not attend the Puri Rath Yatra, director of health services Amarendra Nath Mohanty advised on Friday. They can watch the chariot pulling on TV from their homes, he added. Mohanty requested devotees, who plan to attend the Rath Yatra, to follow respiratory etiquettes like wearing masks and washing hands. The festival, scheduled to be held on June 27, will witness between 8 and 10 lakh devotees. "We should keep the numbers in mind while attending the festival," he added. "Besides, the devotees can follow common advisories like eating healthy food, drinking clean water and using mosquito nets for preventing any water- or vector-borne diseases," he said. Odisha reported seven new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of infections touched 38. Some cases were reported from Puri, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Balasore, apart from Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. "Covid-19 situation in the state is not at all alarming and completely under control. Very few cases have been detected so far. There is no reason to get worried or panic over unnecessary things from unverified sources," he added. Mohanty said the Covid variant detected in the state is not virulent. "People should not get complacent due to a lower number of cases. They should take precautions like they were taking during the pandemic," he added. Official sources said the health department may bring in Covid-19 guidelines if needed. 6 new Covid-19 cases in Nellore puts officials on high alert
Tirupati: The medical and health department is on a high alert following a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Nellore district. About six new Covid-19 cases were reported in the district, prompting the health department to enhance precautionary measures and hospital preparedness. Two nursing students, who came from Kerala and exhibited symptoms of cold, cough and fever, tested Covid positive on Thursday and were admitted to a local hospital. Four others from different parts of Nellore district, including a 65-year-old patient, also tested positive for Covid-19. All six patients were treated initially and then discharged with strict instructions to remain in home isolation until fully recovered. District medical and health officer Dr V Sujatha confirmed the cases and said, "Precautions have been communicated to the patients, and we are monitoring the situation closely." A special 30-bed Covid ward has been set up in the pulmonology department, each bed equipped with a ventilator. Rapid antigen and RT-PCR testing kits are available for quick diagnosis.
