Penang students bag two awards at robotics challenge in Sydney
NINE secondary school students from Penang have made Malaysia proud by securing two prestigious awards at the Asia Pacific Open Championship – First Lego League Challenge (FLL).
Competing under the team name Nemesis-X Assassins, the students clinched the Overall Champion Award (Grand Champion) and came in second in the Best Robot Performance Award category.
In the highly competitive global event, the team – united by a shared passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and robotics – stood out for their outstanding teamwork, innovative design thinking and consistent on-stage performance.
The team members were Chong Yao Qing (SMJK Chung Ling), Edmond Tan Hung Xuan (SMJK Phor Tay), Isaac Fong Wah Kin (SMJK Heng Ee Cawangan), Neoh Yi Qing (Penang Chinese Girls' High School), Seow Carlson (Han Chiang High School), Tan Ee Shern (Chung Ling Private High School), Teh Yu Xuan (Han Chiang High School), Tong Zee Kenn (SMJK Chung Ling) and Wong Zi Chiun (SMJK Heng Ee Cawangan).
All of them are 16 years old except Ee Shern, who is 15.
Held at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, the international robotics tournament, themed 'Submerged' this season, brought together 59 teams from 22 countries.
Besides Malaysia, the other participating countries were Australia, United States, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, China, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, Hong Kong, South Africa, Romania, Turkey, Honduras, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan and Vietnam.
The team previously emerged second runner-up at the 2024 Malaysia FLL Challenge National Open Championship, earning them the honour of representing the country at the international competition in Australia.
Their recent victory marked a historic milestone, as it was the first time since 2017 that Malaysia has reclaimed the Overall Champion title at an FLL international event.
Accompanying the team at the tournament were coaches Ng Lee Chuang, Eric Lo Weng Kit, Ritchie Poh and Soon Khye Ze.

Clairton Coke Works explosion: 1 killed, 1 unaccounted for and at least 10 injured after explosion at U.S. Steel plant in Pennsylvania
Emergency officials are on the scene as at least 10 people were reportedly injured by the explosion. One person has died, one person is unaccounted for and at least 10 are injured following an explosion at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh, Allegheny County Police Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph said at a press conference Monday afternoon. The explosion erupted at Clairton Coke Works around 10:51 a.m. ET on Monday. While the plant is stable, an active investigation is underway, Scott Buckiso, the executive vice president and chief manufacturing officer at U.S. Steel, said. Clairton Coke Works sits along the Monongahela River, about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh, and is part of the U.S. Steel manufacturing group based out of western Pennsylvania. Plants like this heat up coal to produce coke, a carbon-rich substance that's crucial for creating steel. Clairton Coke Works is considered the largest coke plant in North America, according to U.S. Steel, and produces around 4.3 million tons of coke annually. Nearly 1,300 people work at Clairton Plant, David B. Burritt, the president and CEO of U.S. Steel, said in a statement on X. 'We are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident and will provide additional updates as they become available," Burritt said. The explosion reportedly took place inside the plant's 'reversing room,' sources told Pittsburgh KDKA reporter Ricky Sayer, which is a specialized area within the coke producing oven that's designed to help control air and gas flows during the coal heating process. 'Felt like thunder,' Zachary Buday, a construction worker who was near the scene at the time of the explosion, told local ABC affiliate WTAE-TV. 'Shook the scaffold, shook my chest and shook the building, and then when we saw the dark smoke coming up from the steel mill, and put two and two together and it's like something bad happened.' Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said in an X post that his administration was in touch with local officials. 'The scene is still active, and folks nearby should follow the direction of local authorities,' Shapiro wrote. 'Please join Lori and me in praying for the Clairton community.' Over the last few years, Clairton Coke Works has faced a number of lawsuits over pollution concerns. Most recently, in 2019, the plant settled a 2017 lawsuit for $8.5 million and agreed to spend at least $6.5 million to reduce its soot emissions and noxious odors. While the situation is far more complex than many are claiming, the reality is that is unlikely to go anywhere if Newcastle aren't able to find sufficient attacking replacements for him. In addition, L'Equipe are reporting that striker Arnaud Kalimuendo could sign in England in the coming days, with Brentford and Newcastle in talks. The slight caveat to this deal is that Brentford are more advanced, although this would make sense if Newcastle's move for Wissa is getting closer. So we're looking at two potential deals that would certainly bring Isak closer to joining Liverpool. Whether any of them go through is still to be seen, Howe and his PIF bosses have struggled to get their targets over the line this summer, but you'd expect them to catch a break sooner or later. As such, we might start to see a little but more movement on Isak in the coming days now that some new targets are being considered by Newcastle to replace him, and while we've not been given the all clear, it appears as though everything else would fall into place once the green light is signalled.
