Sohar Aluminium pushes recycling agenda at industry forum

Muscat Daily22-04-2025

Muscat – Sohar Aluminium hosted the second Aluminium Recycling Forum on Tuesday. It aimed to advance aluminium recycling and support sustainable industrial development in Oman.
Held in collaboration with Environment Authority under the patronage of its chairman Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, the forum brought together industry leaders, policymakers and sustainability experts to discuss global trends and the future of aluminium recycling in the sultanate.
Said al Masoudi, CEO of Sohar Aluminium, said the forum was part of a broader effort to align the aluminium industry with national sustainability goals. 'At Sohar Aluminium, we believe recycling is more than just an environmental obligation; it is a strategic driver of economic resilience, resource efficiency and innovation,' he said.
'This forum brings a unique opportunity to align cross-sector efforts, foster new partnerships, and spark policy dialogue that supports the emergence of a strong recycling ecosystem in Oman and the wider region.'
Recycling of aluminium scrap by Sohar Aluminium surpassed 2,400 tonnes in early 2024, with the company targeting 3,500 tonnes by the end of the year.
Speakers included Dr Fiona Solomon, CEO, and Dr Gabriel Carmona Aparicio, Circularity Research Manager of Aluminium Stewardship Initiative; and Mahmood Dailami, Secretary General of Gulf Aluminium Council.
The forum featured two panel discussions. The first focused on operational and strategic challenges faced by recycling operators and industry stakeholders, while the second examined the economic potential of aluminium recycling, and the policy and investment measures needed to support its growth. Panellists explored how trade regulations, regional collaboration, and financial tools such as ESG-focused investments and green financing could drive the sector forward. Public-private partnerships were also discussed as a means to strengthen Oman's recycling economy and promote long-term sustainability.

Oman advances diverse energy portfolio: EDO

MUSCAT, JUNE 4 Oman is set to undergo a major transformation in its energy sector over the next decade, with plans for broad-based expansion across both hydrocarbons and renewable energy sources, according to a key executive of the Sultanate of Oman's pivotal energy industry. Mazin Rashid al Lamki, CEO of Energy Development Oman (EDO)—the wholly government-owned energy sector holding company—said the evolving strategy reflects global energy shifts while maintaining a strong commitment to domestic needs and export potential. In an interview featured in the latest Oman-focused edition of Oxford Business Group (OBG), Al Lamki noted that nationwide assessments of the country's energy resources, currently nearing completion, indicate a 'stronger-than-expected' potential in oil and gas. Together with assessments of Oman's solar and wind capacity, a picture is emerging of a balanced energy mix catering to both domestic demand and exports. 'Overall, we are moving toward a more diversified and integrated energy portfolio. Once it reaches commercial scale, you will see Oman expanding oil, gas, renewables, and green hydrogen. It is not a transition away from hydrocarbons, but a strategic broadening to meet domestic needs and seize export opportunities in an evolving global energy landscape,' Al Lamki stated. In line with this strategic direction, renewable resources are targeted to account for 30% of electricity production by 2030—a figure that could rise to 40–45%, according to current indicators. Hydrocarbon production is also expected to grow in response to sustained global demand, he noted. Al Lamki also emphasized the need for greater investment in the country's energy infrastructure to meet the ambitious renewable energy targets by 2030. 'Oman must expand its electricity infrastructure to meet the 2030 renewable energy target. Today's grid is designed for 11 GW of capacity, but by 2030 we expect that figure to rise to 35–40 GW. This requires investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure,' he said. One key area of focus, he added, is the development of common-use infrastructure to support both green hydrogen and renewable energy projects—a move that would help lower costs and maximize efficiency. 'Public-private partnerships (PPPs) will be key to this process. We are looking at PPP models to support grid expansion, particularly in the northern regions. Existing oil and gas transport infrastructure may be adapted to move hydrogen and desalinated water. Coordinated planning across electricity, water, and hydrogen infrastructure will be essential—and shared investment models will make that feasible,' he explained. When asked about potential sources of foreign direct investment (FDI) to support Oman's energy infrastructure, Al Lamki cited countries in Asia and Europe as particularly promising. 'These countries are seeking reliable, long-term supplies of both clean and conventional energy, and Oman stands out as an appealing partner due to its geopolitical stability, rich resource base, and clear commitment to energy diversification,' he said. Affiliated with the Ministry of Finance, EDO owns 60% of the Block 6 concession operated by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), 100% of Block 6's non-associated gas concession, and 100% of Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom), the master planner of the Sultanate's green hydrogen industry.

Rakiza joins UN Principles for Responsible Investment

MUSCAT: Oman Infrastructure Investment Management (Rakiza), a dedicated infrastructure fund manager based in Oman, has joined the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI). This move reaffirms Rakiza's commitment to building sustainable infrastructure through a disciplined, responsible investment approach. Rakiza is currently the only infrastructure fund manager among signatories in the GCC and becomes one of only two UNPRI signatories based in Oman. 'ESG is not new to us — it's built into our investment process, asset management and decision-making,' said Muneer al Muneeri, CEO of Rakiza. 'Becoming a UNPRI signatory is about reinforcing that commitment publicly and contributing to the global benchmark for responsible infrastructure investment.' Rakiza co-manages Rakiza Fund I, which targets essential infrastructure sectors such as renewable energy, utilities, telecommunications, digital infrastructure, transport and logistics; and social infrastructure in Oman and Saudi Arabia. As fund manager, Rakiza prioritises long-term value creation, responsible stewardship and alignment with regional sustainability goals — with ESG principles integrated across the full investment lifecycle. 'We are delighted to welcome Rakiza as a PRI signatory,' said David Atkin, CEO of the PRI. 'Responsible investment is naturally aligned with infrastructure, given its long-term horizon as an asset class and its potential to shape sustainability outcomes. We look forward to working with Rakiza as part of our global signatory base.' The UNPRI's six principles offer a global framework for institutional investors to incorporate ESG factors into their investment and ownership decisions. By becoming a signatory, Rakiza commits to these principles and to reporting transparently on how ESG is embedded into its investment practices. Caption: Muneer al Muneeri, CEO of Rakiza
