Marking the 40th anniversary of AMCEN, the conference celebrated four decades of regional environmental progress in sustainable development, biodiversity protection, climate action and pollution control. Dr Abdullah praised AMCEN's historic achievements and its pivotal role in unifying Africa's environmental agenda and strengthening its global voice. During the event, Dr Abdullah emphasised the robust partnership between AMCEN and UNEA, highlighting cooperation aimed at achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Africa's Agenda 2063. He outlined future plans focusing on scientific policymaking, sustainable climate financing, AI-driven environmental monitoring and promoting inclusive green transformations. On the sidelines, Dr Abdullah engaged in high-level discussions with representatives from the Group of 77 and China, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, focusing on preparations for UNEA's seventh session and key environmental initiatives, including the global plastic pollution treaty. Muscat – Oman took part in the 20th African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) held in Nairobi from July 14 to 18. The delegation was led by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of Environment Authority and President of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). Oman's participation was part of the preparatory plan as UNEA-7 president focusing on partnership with all stakeholders to ensure a successful session. This edition of AMCEN also marked the 40th anniversary of the conference, which was founded in 1985 and has contributed to progress in sustainable development, biodiversity protection, climate action and pollution control. In his address, Amri commended AMCEN and the African Union for their long-standing contributions to joint environmental action across the continent. He traced the conference's journey since its inception in Cairo and acknowledged its role in shaping a unified African environmental agenda and strengthening the continent's voice in global negotiations. He underlined the collaboration between AMCEN and UNEA as a model for regional-global partnerships, noting its significance in advancing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Africa's Agenda 2063. Amri also outlined a vision to strengthen AMCEN's role through science-based policymaking, climate-sensitive financing, the use of digital and AI tools for environmental monitoring, and integrated approaches linking energy, minerals and the environment. He emphasised the need for inclusive and just green transitions in future development. On the sidelines of the conference, Amri held a series of meetings with key stakeholders. He met representatives of the Group of 77 and China to exchange views on the draft Ministerial Declaration and agenda topics. Discussions on similar themes were also held with EU representatives, including the European Commissioner for Environment and Circular Economy. Amri also met the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation in Nairobi, with talks focusing on UNEA-7 preparations. He held a separate meeting with Dr Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, to explore areas of collaboration with the Convention Secretariat. Additionally, Amri held consultations with several African environment ministers, reviewing the state of preparations for UNEA-7 and gathering inputs on the draft Ministerial Declaration.

MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, hosted a joint virtual preparatory meeting in preparation for the 7th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from December 8-12, 2025. The meeting was attended by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority. The meeting discussed the latest developments regarding the draft ministerial declaration for UNEA-7, which aims to advance sustainable solutions to global environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The participants also reviewed a draft guide for the mechanism of submitting proposed resolutions by member states, presented by the UNEA-7 Secretariat, along with guidelines for draft resolutions. The meeting examined a concept note on organising a dedicated day for multilateral environmental agreements to enhance their role and improve coordination among relevant stakeholders. Additionally, the session addressed organisational arrangements and proposed topics for leadership and stakeholder dialogues during the assembly, aimed at fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange. The draft communication strategy for the session was also reviewed, which seeks to highlight the assembly's themes and raise awareness of environmental issues. On the sidelines of the meeting, a virtual dialogue session was held with representatives of major groups and stakeholders to gather their input on ongoing preparations, ensuring inclusive and representative decisions that reflect civil society perspectives. This meeting marks a significant step towards strengthening international cooperation to address environmental challenges and ensuring the success of UNEA-7. The session was attended by several ministers, ambassadors, members of the assembly's Bureau, the Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the UN Environment Programme, and Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the Programme. - ONA

Muscat – The Environment Authority (EA) and Japan's Ministry of the Environment signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on Tuesday to strengthen collaboration on environmental issues and support sustainable development initiatives. The agreement aims to accelerate the implementation of multilateral environmental accords such as the Paris Agreement, while establishing a framework for cooperation based on equality, reciprocity, and mutual benefit. The MoC was signed by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, and Matsuzawa Yutaka, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs at Japan's Ministry of the Environment. The signing ceremony was attended by H E Kiyoshi Serizawa, Ambassador of Japan to Oman. Key areas of cooperation outlined in the MoC include climate change mitigation and adaptation, waste management, biodiversity conservation through nature-based solutions, and environmental monitoring. Under the agreement, both sides will collaborate on training programmes, expert visits, scientific research, knowledge exchange, interactive discussions, and joint projects in existing and emerging areas of cooperation.

RO 44m eco-tourism projects to be set up in seven nature reserves

Muscat: At a cost of more than RO 44 million, nine environmental investment projects are set to be established in seven reserves as the Environment Authority (EA) signed contracts for eco-tourism investment projects in nature reserves at a ceremony held on Monday. The Environment Authority signed four contracts with the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran) to develop, operate and manage four nature reserves. It also signed two other agreements with the same company to develop and operate the Lajshlion site in the Jabal Samhan Reserve and the Hayur site in the Wilayat of Mirbat. Additionally, it signed two environmental investment contracts for two sites in the Jabal Shams Starlight Reserve to establish an eco-tourism resort with Madar Resorts Company and a Star Garden project with the Omani Society for Astronomy and Space. The Authority also signed another contract with Al Majal Integrated Establishment to develop the Khor Al Mughsail Reserve in Salalah, Dhofar Governorate. Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, stated, 'These agreements will pave the way for eco-tourism in the country and further develop the partnership between the Environment Authority and the private sector. The projects are expected to be completed in two to four years. Some nature reserves already have ongoing activities. Once completed, the projects could bring job opportunities.' He added that the local community will have opportunities for economic activities. 'This is also a way to foster a connection between biodiversity, the local community and visitors,' he said. The official signing ceremony took place under the auspices of Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism. The goal is to promote sustainable development, protect ecosystems, promote tourism and environmental education, increase revenues, diversify sources of income, and ensure the sustainability of natural resources for future generations. Dr Al Amri explained that these projects include the establishment of eco-tourism resorts, a star park, eco-lodges, eco-tourism camps, visitor centres, interactive exhibitions, restaurants and cafes, viewing trails, safaris, adventure tourism in nature reserves, and an open sea turtle pond and lake. 'This investment in eco-tourism aims to protect and preserve the natural heritage in nature reserves and ensure its sustainability for future generations.' The investment activities and packages in nature reserves were selected according to specific controls, standards and general conditions consistent with their management, operation and development plans. These include: the ability to prepare, implement and manage tourism and environmental activities or projects; attaching the required plans, documents, designs and explanatory maps; and following best practices. The projects will be implemented in Jabal Samhan Reserve and Hayur site in the Wilayat of Mirbat, Dhofar Governorate, the Ras Al Shajar Nature Reserve in the Wilayat of Qurayat, Muscat Governorate, the Wetlands Reserve in Al Wusta Governorate, the Natural Turtle Reserve in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, and the Arabian Oryx Reserve in Al Wusta Governorate.
