DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has called for working with commitment towards environmental protection and promotion, on the occasion of
World Environment Day
.
Stating the need for collective efforts towards environmental protection, the chief minister said that we have to unite and think towards the conservation of nature as well.
Describing environmental conservation as a subject related to life, he said that environmental conservation is in the nature of the people of Uttarakhand. Festivals like Harela are the result of the far-sighted thinking of our ancestors to connect with nature. The people of Uttarakhand have played a leading role in environmental conservation.
The state government is committed to the conservation of rich bio resources.
Uttarakhand is the flag bearer of the campaign for environmental conservation due to its forest wealth and rivers.
The chief minister said that along with government efforts, common people, public representatives and voluntary organisations will have to continuously contribute actively in awakening public consciousness towards environmental conservation and its promotion.
He said that, along with planting as many trees as possible, full effort is also necessary for the cleanliness of rivers and water sources.

The chief minister has appealed to all the people to participate enthusiastically in the plantation and cleanliness campaign being run across the state on the occasion of Environment Day and has also emphasised on specially encourage the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign' and run an awareness campaign to make Uttarakhand plastic free.

Nagpur: In a strong demonstration of its commitment to sustainability, the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM-N) celebrated World Environment Day by highlighting a series of impactful eco-friendly initiatives that position the institute as a leader in environmental stewardship among India's educational institutions. IIM Nagpur's sustainability vision is anchored in six key projects that work in harmony to reduce the campus's environmental impact and promote green living. One of the most significant efforts is the integration of solar energy. A 2MW power project is underway which will make IIMN completely self-sustained for its energy needs. "Our solar infrastructure serves a dual purpose: reducing our carbon footprint and providing students with a live demonstration of renewable energy in action," Dr Metri added. Water conservation is another cornerstone of the institute's strategy. Rainwater harvesting systems are installed across the campus, recharging groundwater and reducing reliance on municipal water supplies, particularly during dry periods. In tandem, campus buildings have been designed with passive cooling, natural lighting, and energy-efficient insulation to minimise energy use for lighting and climate control. Wastewater is fully treated and reused for landscaping and other non-potable purposes through a closed-loop system, ensuring zero discharge into the environment. IIM Nagpur is collaborating with HP Enterprise which will help to map and monitor our sustainability efforts. To commemorate World Environment Day, the IIM Nagpur community — faculty and staff — came together for a tree-planting drive in the campus, reinforcing their shared responsibility for the environment.

More than 200 fruit trees to boost Salt Lake green cover
1 2 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will plant over 200 small and medium-sized fruit trees of different varieties across Salt Lake. BMC MMIC (Environment) Rahima Bibi Mondal said saplings of mango, rose apple, guava, sapota, and other trees will be planted at various locations. "The fruit trees will be planted along the roads and parks. Surveys are being carried out to find suitable locations for plantation. The aim is to increase greenery," Mondal said. It was earlier decided by the civic authorities that henceforth, only small and medium-sized flower and fruit trees would be planted instead of the taller varieties. This decision was taken to ensure better urban planning and safety, as a number of accidents had occurred recently due to tall trees getting uprooted and falling on the road. Two years ago, a 40-year-old died after succumbing to injuries a few days after a large dead tree fell on him inside a cluster at Salt Lake's Purbachal housing. Horticulture experts mentioned that the nature of the soil in Salt Lake is such that large trees, which have deep roots, should not be planted on the roadside boulevards as they cannot penetrate deep into the soil. "Councillors are providing a list of tall trees that are in bad shape. Those that are dead or in a very damaged state will be uprooted, and other trees will be trimmed to reduce their weight so that they can properly stand. Trees showing signs of decay or structural weakness will either be treated by trimming or cutting off the damaged portions or be removed if necessary and replaced with suitable small or medium-sized trees," said a civic official. Residents are welcoming the civic body's move, saying that tall trees had fallen several times at different places, not only causing accidents but also damaging public utilities like cars and boundary walls of parks. Bison count in Debrigarh goes up by 129; current popn becomes 788
Bhubaneswar: Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary on Friday recorded an increase of 129 Indian bison in the summer census in just a few months, bringing their total count to 788. In the winter census, their number was 659. This time, Debrigarh, the lone sanctuary in the state with a rich bison density, recorded 60 herds, compared to 52 herds in the last census. The 788 gaurs include 315 juveniles (less than two years old) and 128 newborns (less than three months old). The juveniles constitute 40% of the total population. "Due to the increase in population, herds keep drifting, with female adults leading a herd and guiding other sub-adults and juveniles," said Anshu Pragyan Das, divisional forest officer, Debrigarh. Indian bison, or gaurs, are primary prey for carnivores in any habitat. They are particularly favoured by big cats such as Royal Bengal Tigers and leopards. Das added that mostly in the Central Indian landscape and a few other parts of India, summer marks the breeding season for Indian bisons. Wildlife officials stated that bisons can migrate long distances, but in Debrigarh, they are seen to display seasonal movement ranging from five to 15km per day, keeping their territory mostly intact. In the safari zone, a total of 145 bisons are sighted in six herds. For the count, the wildlife wing engaged 73 census units with 147 members. They conducted a three-day direct counting from 6 am to 6 pm. As many as 122 camera traps and 130 pug impression pads were used for the census. The Debrigarh bison is mostly seen along the shoreline of the Hirakud reservoir bordering the sanctuary. An adult gaur weighs up to 1500 kg, officials said.
