Dangerous, record-high heat forecast for locations in Japan
The Japan Meteorological Agency says the heat wave is expected to intensify across the country as a high pressure system blankets the archipelago.
The mercury has topped 38 degrees Celsius in several places, including in the town of Bihoro in Hokkaido. Similar readings were seen in the prefectures of Fukushima and Kyoto.
In Hokkaido's Shari Town, a woman in her 90s died after suffering from suspected heatstroke.
Heatstroke alerts have been issued across Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa Prefecture in the south.
High temperatures during the day and cold air above are expected to cause extremely unstable atmospheric conditions. Weather officials say that inland areas may see sudden changes on Wednesday afternoon, including the possibility of heavy rainfall.

The Ministry of the Environment and the JMA issued heatstroke alerts for 20 out of Japan's 47 prefectures, urging the public to use air conditioning appropriately and to stay hydrated. Triple Typhoons South of Japan; Typhoon Co-may to Be Closest to Miyako Island on Saturday
Typhoon Francisco, or Typhoon No. 7, left the waters off Okinawa Island on Friday and is heading toward mainland China. It is expected to weaken into a tropical depression later in the afternoon. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon Francisco was moving westward at a speed of about 30 kilometers per hour as of 9 a.m. Friday, about 250 kilometers north-northeast of Yonaguni Island, Okinawa Prefecture. The central pressure was 994 hectopascals, and the maximum wind speed was 18 meters per second. Meanwhile, Typhoon Co-may, or Typhoon No. 8, is moving northeast over the South China Sea at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour. It is expected to make its closest approach to Miyako Island, Okinawa Prefecture, at 9 a.m. Saturday. As of 9 a.m. Friday, its central pressure was 980 hectopascals, and the maximum wind speed near its center was 30 meters per second. The agency is calling for caution against high waves and swells in the Okinawa and Amami regions. Typhoon Krosa, or Typhoon No. 9, which formed in the waters off the Mariana Islands south of Japan, is moving north at a speed of about 15 kilometers per hour and is expected to approach the Ogasawara Islands on Monday.

The day's highs are expected to be 39 degrees Celsius in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, and 38 degrees in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, and the cities of Fukushima, Maebashi, Kumagaya, Kyoto and Maizuru. In Hokkaido, where Kitami City recorded 39 degrees on Thursday, the day's highs are expected to be slightly lower on Friday, at 36 degrees in the cities of Kitami and Iwamizawa and 35 degrees in the cities of Sapporo and Obihiro. Elsewhere, highs of 37 degrees are expected in the cities of Kofu, Fukui and Tottori, 36 degrees in the cities of Sasebo, Yamaguchi and Takamatsu, and 35 degrees in central Tokyo and the cities of Nagoya and Fukuoka.
