Tihar jail prisoner die by suicide by hanging from the window
The prisoner was an under-trial inmate, namely Ramesh Karmakar, who was lodged in Jail Number 4 but was undergoing treatment at the jail hospital in Jail Number 3 since May 28.
Karmakar's body was found hanging from a window late on the night of Sunday, and the jail authorities were informed on the early morning of Monday.
In another such case, an accused named Saquib Nachan in connection with the terror group Islamic State (ISIS), died in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, informed sources said on Saturday.
He has been in judicial custody in Tihar Jail since 2023 and was admitted to the hospital a few days ago, they said.
Saquib was convicted for his involvement in the bomb blasts in Mumbai in 2002 and 2003.
In line with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Saquib Nachan, a habitual offender in many previous terror cases, was also a self-styled Amir-e-Hind for ISIS in India.
Earlier in June 2024, the National Investigative Agency (NIA) had chargesheeted Nachan along with 16 hardcore agents of a proscribed global terrorist network, in a conspiracy involving the recruitment and radicalisation of youth and the fabrication of improvised explosive devices in the Delhi-Padgha ISIS terror module case.
The accused were chargesheeted under various sections of IPC, UA(P) Act, Arms Act and Explosive Substances ACt, were found to have been engaged in a massive ISISI conspirancy involving recruitment, training and propagation of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ideology among gullible youth, along with fabrication of explosives and IEDs are fund-raising for the banned outfit.
Its investigation had subsequently led to the seizure of several incriminating documents and data relating to the manufacturing of explosives and the fabrication of IEDs, along with propaganda magazines like 'Voice of Hindi', 'Rumiyah', 'Khhiafat', 'Dabiq', published by IS. (ANI)

Supervisor held for duping Coimbatore-based contractor of Rs 78 lakh
COIMBATORE: The district crime branch police on Monday arrested a 51-year-old man for duping a Coimbatore-based contractor of Rs 78 lakh. The arrested man has been identified as N Rajan, 51, of Sir Shanmugam Road near R S Puram in the city. In 2021, Rajan joined Bharathi Constructions as a supervisor. The firm, owned by R Kalaivani of Malumichampatti, took contracts for road work in Thondamuthur, Perur, Alanthurai, Thenkarai municipalities in Coimbatore district and Sholur municipality in the Nilgiris district. Rajan was supervising the work undertaken by the firm. He was maintaining the firm's bank accounts. In 2022, the firm took a contract for laying roads in Sholur municipality in the Nilgiris district. Rajan was maintaining the accounts of the work. When the work was delayed, Kalaivani questioned Rajan. As Rajan did not answer properly, Kalaivani went to the bank and verified the firm's bank account handled by Rajan. He assured her to return the money he had transferred to his accounts and those of his wife and friends. But he returned only Rs 33 lakh to Kalaivani. When Kalaivani's efforts to retrieve the remaining Rs 78 lakh went in vain, she lodged a formal complaint with the district crime branch police on Saturday (Aug 2). The police registered a case against Rajan under Section 408 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested him on Monday. He was remanded in judicial custody.

Double murder: SC/ST national chief visits Pudukottai village
Pudukottai: Chairman of the national commission for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, Kishor Makwana, visited Avudaiyarkoil in Pudukottai district on Monday where two dalit brothers were hacked to death last month. Makwana visited the village and held discussions with local officials, victims' families, and law enforcement personnel. He was accompanied by central zone IG K Joshi Nirmal Kumar, district collector Aruna, SP Abhishek Gupta and other govt officials. It may be recalled that on the night of July 24, K Kannan, 35, and his younger brother K Karthik, 29, residents of Kamarajar Nagar in Avudaiyarkoil, were hacked to death by an armed gang. The attack occurred when the brothers were chatting near a tank close to their home. The assailants, who arrived on bikes, used machetes to carry out the fatal assault. Six special teams were formed to trace the culprits and so far, sources said eight people have been arrested in connection with the murders. A case was registered under various sections and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police have maintained that the violence was a fallout of a financial dispute over the sale of a high-end sports bike and not a caste violence though the two killed belonged to the SC community.

High court asks DGP Punjab to submit details of police officers with Pending FIRs
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked the DGP, Punjab, to file his affidavit regarding all the officials/officers of Punjab Police against whom FIRs have been registered and are still continuing in service. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The DGP has been directed to furnish the details, including the name and designation of such officers/officials, their present place of posting, the details of the FIRs, i.e., FIR number, date of registration of the case, offences, and the police station. The state police chief has also been asked to provide further details like the status of investigation/trial, whether any disciplinary/departmental action was taken against the officer, the status of disciplinary/departmental proceedings, and the date of reinstatement of such officers in Punjab Police. Justice N S Shekhawat passed these orders while taking note of a bail petition filed by an accused facing drugs and cases related to the Arms Act. During the hearing of the matter, the HC was informed that one Inspector Vijay Kumar, who was earlier dismissed from service, was reinstated. The court was apprised that the said officer was facing a criminal case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Police Station Vigilance Bureau, Patiala, yet he was retained in service and posted at Police Line, Barnala. On this, while expanding the scope of the petition, the court directed the DGP Punjab to furnish details about the cops facing criminal charges. The matter has now been fixed for August 25 for further hearing.
