Red alert in Delhi as heavy rain lashes city, floods roads, hits traffic

Heavy rain lashes Delhi-NCR, causes waterlogging
Heavy rain lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday evening, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city.
Visuals from BD Marg, GRG Road and Lodhi Road showed roads submerged under rainwater, severely affecting vehicle movement and pedestrian access.
In neighbouring Gurugram, the intense showers triggered waterlogging in several areas, causing significant traffic jams and hardship for commuters.

Due to inclement weather on Wednesday evening, six flights were diverted and several others were delayed at Delhi airport, reported PTI. Four flights were rerouted to Jaipur and two to Lucknow.
Rain improves air quality in Delhi
Intense rainfall on Wednesday evening brought a marked improvement in Delhi's air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 63 at 7:00 am on Thursday. Air quality remains satisfactory in the national capital.
According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
Weekly weather forecast for Delhi
The IMD has not issued any significant weather warnings for the week, although a red alert remains active for July 10. Light rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected to continue through the week. No heatwave conditions are forecast for the days ahead.

In June, reservoir levels declined at nearly three-quarters of monitored sites, with all regions now recording below-average water storage. The agency has warned that continued dry conditions could place further pressure on water resources and the environment. Tim Fox, fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and co-author of a report on climate change adaptation, emphasised that the recent heatwaves in Britain are not isolated events but are expected to become increasingly common in the future. "As UK summers become hotter, with longer periods of high temperature extremes, the impact will reach far beyond personal discomfort," he said. The heat will continue into Saturday, when temperatures could reach 31 degrees Celsius in parts of central and north-east Scotland, which would make it the hottest day of the year so far north of the border. The heat spreading across the UK marks the third official heatwave of 2025 already.

Weather today: Yellow alert for rain in Delhi, Gurugram today
A heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over East Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh is expected today. Besides, some isolated places in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh can also witness heavy rainfall. Amid the ongoing monsoon disaster, Himachal Pradesh on Saturday issued a yellow alert for Solan and Sirmaur.(PTI) As monsoon is spreading in India its axis has shifted southwards and is currently passing over Bikaner. Due to this, the chances of rain are lower in Chandigarh and surrounding areas. However, light showers may still occur owing to the high humidity levels, according to IMD. Yellow alert in Delhi for light rain In Delhi, a yellow alert has been issued for today for entire national capital including north, south and central parts of the city. The weather today will be generally cloudy with very light to light rain accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning. Meanwhile, the temperature is expected to remain between 24-36 degree celsius. On Friday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees below normal for this time of the year, reported PTI. Yellow alert in Gurugram and Faridabad According to the regional Met Centre, Chandigarh, a yellow alert has been issued in Gurugram, Faridabad and Mahendragarh for moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning. In past few days, Gurgaon received heavy rainfall that led to waterlogging in many parts of the city. IMD has predicted light rainfall in isolated places of Ambala, Palwal, Mewat, Jhajhar and Rewari. Heavy rainfall in parts of Himachal Amid the ongoing monsoon disaster, Himachal Pradesh on Saturday issued a yellow alert for Solan and Sirmaur. There was no warning for other areas of the state. Cloudbursts, landslides, floods and other rain related incidents in the state has led to the death of at least 91 people, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), reported ANI. For the next few days, yellow alerts will be observed in some places including Solan, Sirmaur and Shimla on July 13 and 14. According to the weekly forecast, in Madhya Pradesh rainfall is expected to be above normal till 18 July.

Intermittent rainfall is expected across large parts of the country till July 17, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy showers in several regions, including the National Capital Region (NCR). The NCR is witnessing waterlogging and traffic disruptions at several places due to the rains, which have already affected daily life. In Delhi-NCR, rain is likely to continue throughout the week, with spells of strong sunlight causing humidity and discomfort. However, no official weather alert has been issued yet for the Delhi-NCR, but the IMD has warned of persistent rain and thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to range between 23 and 36 degrees Celsius, while humidity may hover between 60 per cent and 95 per cent. Waterlogging has been reported from several parts of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, leading to long traffic jams and vehicle breakdowns in inundated areas. Major roads, underpasses, and residential colonies remain affected. According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Central and Northwest India, particularly East Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and both western and eastern Uttar Pradesh till July 17. The IMD said isolated heavy rain is expected over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal (both Gangetic and Sub-Himalayan regions) in eastern and central India. On July 13, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Konkan & Goa, Gujarat, Central Maharashtra, and Saurashtra. According to the weather department, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is forecast to continue over the next seven days in Northeast India. Southern states, including Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, are also likely to receive isolated heavy showers during the same period. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal till July 16.
