Léon Marchand tries to break his own 200 IM world record at the swim worlds in Singapore
If you missed it, Marchand only set the record on Wednesday in the semifinals at the worlds — 1 minute, 52.69 seconds. That shattered the old mark of 1:54.00 held by American Ryan Lochte since 2011.
Of course, Marchand's victory is almost assured. The only question is by how much. A four-time gold medalist a year ago in the Paris Olympics, Marchand will share the stage on Day 5 with Canada's Summer McIntosh.
McIntosh will go for her third medal in Singapore, this time in the 200 freestyle. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia and American Regan Smith are the main rivals. She has already won gold in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle.
McIntosh is bidding for five individual gold medals in Singapore after winning three individual Olympic gold medals in Paris.
Yu Zidi, the 12-year-old Chinese swimmer, is the eighth-fastest qualifier in the field as she tries to reach the podium. She was fourth in the 200 IM.
Three other finals are on the day's program and the Americans have shots. The United States has won only three gold medals in Singapore with the team battling a stomach bug picked up in training camp in Thailand. Head coach Greg Meehan has suggested team health is improving.
In the men's 100 freestyle, American Jack Alexy and Romanian David Popovici were the quickest qualifiers. Popovici has already won the 200 free in Singapore. He was the gold medalist at 200 in Paris, and took bronze in the 100.
American Regan Smith has the quickest time in the 50 backstroke followed very closely by Lauren Cox of Britain, American Katharine Berkoff, and Wan Letian of China.
The last final of the day is the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay.

'I know where he is through the media, so I think from that perspective it's difficult for me to go into any detail,' the 47-year-old said. 'The situation is far from ideal. It is quite complex. I think that is all I have got to say.' There was some positive news for Newcastle supporters; midfielder Joe Willock has not suffered a long-term injury. 'We initially feared he could have injured part of his Achilles, but thankfully that wasn't the case,' Howe said. 'It looks like he has a problem with a muscle in his calf. We feel that the injury is not as serious as first feared, so it's great news, but it's still going to keep him out for a number of weeks. How many we are not sure. Early diagnosis is looking like four to six weeks. So, although being a blow, it's probably better than the initial thought.'

Vaval boosts Blue Bombers in 40-31 win over Argonauts
WINNIPEG — Trey Vaval told himself to relax before playing his seventh CFL game on Friday. The Blue Bombers rookie did that in his head, but not with his feet. The defensive back from Montana dazzled a sold-out crowd when he returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and followed up with a 97-yard punt return for a major that helped Winnipeg snap a three-game CFL losing streak with a 40-31 victory over the Toronto Argonauts. '(I was like), 'Man, just buy in, just believe and trust God and don't stress,'' Vaval said. 'Cause like, this is a stressful game, especially as a rookie. 'I'm out there being the returner and I don't want to mess up. I'm carrying the organization in my hands when I have that ball. So, I just kind of relaxed today, trusted my blockers and hit the hole.' His first and second touchdowns of the CFL season impressed his teammates and the Argonauts. 'Defence stepped up for us huge there down the stretch,' said Blue Bombers quarterback Chris Streveler, who started in place of injured Zach Collaros (neck). 'Special teams, returning two kicks is a massive game-changer. Back and forth all night. We got to get better, I got to get better, but it's ultimately easier to learn from a win than it is a loss.' Streveler completed 17 of 21 pass attempts for 173 yards with three interceptions as Winnipeg improved to 4-3. He also ran four times for 25 yards and one touchdown in front of the team's ninth consecutive sellout at Princess Auto Stadium. The Argonauts dropped to 2-6. 'It was huge,' Toronto head coach Ryan Dinwiddie said of Vaval's scores. 'We gifted them three touchdowns, two on special teams and then the fumble. 'We're not playing good enough football to overcome some of that stuff. But we had a chance, just didn't make enough plays. Our special-teams units, we've got to find a way to get better. A lot of missed tackles out there.' Nick Arbuckle was 22-of-39 passing for 327 yards with one interception and two TDs for the Argonauts. He was disappointed the offence got stopped from the one- and two-yard lines midway through the third quarter and had to settle for a field goal. Running back Khalan Laborn was tripped up by Arbuckle on the second attempt. 'But we still had chances throughout the game,' Arbuckle said. The race is one of six finals on Saturday, but it overshadows everything else on Day 7. The championships wrap up on Sunday. Ledecky of the United States holds the world record (8 minutes, 04.12 seconds) set earlier this year. The 28-year-old American has dominated the distance for a decade and has already won gold in the 1,500 in Singapore. She also has a bronze in the 400.
