University student claims trial to sexually assaulting cousin

KLANG: A university student pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court today to sexually assaulting his cousin sister on three occasions in 2023 and earlier this year.
The accused, 19, made his admission after three charges were read out to him before judge Siti Aminah Ghazali.
The court, however, set Aug 20 for submission of a social report from the Welfare Department and sentencing.
The charges read that the accused, the eldest of four siblings, had sexually assaulted the girl, who was then aged 8 and 9, in a house in Sungai Buloh.
He committed the offences once in September 2023 and twice in March this year.
The youth, who self-mitigated as he does not have legal representation, pleaded for leniency as he is a young offender.
"This is my first offence and I have been remanded for a month.
"During that period, I reflected on my actions and now I am remorseful and repentant.
"My father is supporting my three siblings, who are still studying, and I. I ask for a minimal bail," he said.
Each charge framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offence Against Children Act carries a maximum 20-year jail term and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur 'Ayuni Jamri did not offer bail, describing the offences as serious.
"The victim has familial times with the accused.
"However, if the court allows bail, I ask it to be set at RM15,000 with one surety and he or his representative must be barred from harassing prosecution witnesses," she said.

Interior designer loses RM794,000 after falling for FB investment scam

GEORGE TOWN: A 47-year-old interior designer lost RM794,000 after being deceived by an online investment scheme known as 'CSECDT,' which was advertised on Facebook. She reportedly began communicating with a female suspect via WhatsApp after seeing an ad promising returns of up to 100 per cent within a short period. State police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the victim was instructed to download the investment app and register as a member before starting investments between April 11 and June 3. "During this period, the victim made seven money transfer transactions to seven different bank accounts owned by several companies. "The victim only realised she had been scammed after attempting to withdraw her profits, which amounted to RM2 million, but was asked to pay a withdrawal tax of RM200,000 first," he said in a statement tonight. Hamzah explained that the victim then filed a police report on June 16, and an investigation is currently being carried out under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

KLIA Customs officers foil RM2.65 mln drug smuggling attempts

SEPANG: Customs officers have foiled multiple attempts to smuggle 30.14 kilogrammes (kg) of drugs estimated to be worth RM2.65 million through the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). KLIA Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said that on April 17, a man was arrested for trying to smuggle out 14.65 kg of cannabis buds worth almost RM1.44 million in his checked baggage on a flight to a European country. He said the man was subjected to a baggage inspection after his travel was blocked by the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) due to a blacklist record. 'During the baggage scan, the man attempted to flee but was apprehended by Customs personnel. 'The inspection found that the cannabis buds were packed in vacuum-sealed plastic to avoid detection,' he told a press conference today. Zulkifli said on May 16, Customs found 5.31 kg of ecstasy worth almost RM900,000 that was being smuggled in through a consignment at a cargo terminal operator in the KLIA Free Trade Zone. He said the drugs, believed to have originated from a European country, were packaged and declared as laptop components. Then, on May 24, he said that 10.18 kg of syabu, worth nearly RM300,000, concealed in a consignment along with clothing, was also intercepted. He said investigations into both drug shipments are underway, but face obstacles as the smugglers were likely using fake company names and addresses. 'We have gone to the (premises) as declared in the consignment information, but the company either does not exist or is using someone else's address,' he said.
