Trio claim trial to hurting man using rubber hose in Johor
KULAI: Three syndicate members pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here to injuring a man using a rubber hose at a house in Taman Lagenda Putra here. The accused, Sham Chee Fei, 33, Tommy Voo Tze Hau, 27, and M. Nageswaran, 32, were charged with causing injury to a 26-year-old man using a rubber hose as a weapon, in an act that could have resulted in death. They allegedly committed the act, with another individual who is still at large, at a house on Jalan Lagenda, Taman Lagenda Putra between 7pm on May 22 and 6am on May 23. The three were charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, or a fine, or whipping or any two of the punishments, upon conviction. In the same courtroom, Sham was also charged with possessing the MyKad of a 32-year-old man and two international passports belonging to other individuals without lawful authority, at Senai International Airport at 9.45am on June 20. He pleaded not guilty to the charges under Regulation 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 and Section 12(1)(f) of the Passport Act 1966. Deputy Public Prosecutor S. Thiviya proposed bail of RM15,000 each with one surety. Sham and Voo's lawyer Gary Ng Boon Hui asked for a lower bail, saying that his clients worked as a real estate agent and a travel agency employee respectively without a fixed income and were supporting their elderly parents. Nageswaran's lawyer Lim Seay Sean also requested a reduced amount, saying his client is currently unemployed. Magistrate R. Salini granted Voo and Nageswaran a bail of RM5,000 each with one surety, while Sham was granted a bail of RM7,000 with one surety. The court fixed Aug 27 for next mention and submission of documents for all the cases.

'Borneo well-placed to harness offshore solar energy'
Barbulescu speaks during a plenary session titled Modernising Power Grids: Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Advancing Energy Storage Technologies at the International Energy Week 2025 on Tuesday. – Photo by James Wong KUCHING (July 15, 2025) : Borneo holds a strategic advantage when it comes to harnessing offshore solar energy, said Romanian Ambassador to Malaysia Nineta Barbulescu. She said the island of Borneo possesses ideal physical conditions for large-scale renewable energy projects, including offshore solar, carbon capture and storage, as well as green hydrogen and methanol production from seawater. 'The fact that Borneo offshore wind and wave output are lowest globally, it's a fact, but it's a very useful feature. 'Therefore, it makes this place ideal for offshore solar development, carbon capture and storage for green hydrogen extracted from seawater and green methanol for shipping,' she said. She said this during a plenary session titled Modernising Power Grids: Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Advancing Energy Storage Technologies at the International Energy Week 2025 held at the Borneo Convention Centre here today. Barbulescu also shared research done with the Australian National University which found that Borneo is among the few places globally that meet the key physical conditions needed for offshore renewable energy infrastructure. 'This region gets an average solar insulation of 175 watts per square metre, wave heights up to seven metres, water depths less than 800 metres and no hurricanes. 'If you look around the world, there are not many competitors in this category,' she added. She also introduced the concept of a 'hydro battery' proposal through a research consortium involving several universities including Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Australia National University, and institutions from Romania and Singapore. She explained that the Sarawak hydro battery concept involves using Bakun and Murum lakes as a closed-loop pumped storage hydro (PSH) system. This allows for the generation and storage of renewable energy while also serving as a flood mitigation tool during emergency. Using the Bakun and Murum dams as example, she said 500 gigawatt-hours of storage can be achieved by pumping 1,700 gigalitres of water uphill through a 2.8-kilometre penstock. The estimated cost is RM47 per kilowatt-hour, which is less than 5 per cent of the cost of lithium batteries. The plan involves three phases of development, from 2 to 5 to 15 gigawatt-hours, with full-scale deployment reaching 500 gigawatt-hours. Up to 120 gigawatts of floating solar panels can be installed on both lakes, supplying power to the hydro battery system for round-the-clock renewable energy output of 20 gigawatts. The total capital cost for hydro battery is estimated at RM15 billion per gigawatt, with a levelised cost of energy at 5.5 sen per kilowatt-hour. In comparison, gas power plants with carbon capture systems cost about RM13.6 billion per gigawatt and deliver energy at 8.5 sen per kilowatt-hour. 'The end product is that hydro battery generates energy, which is cheaper even than gas. And of course, it's friendly with the environment,' she said. Barbulescu said the hydro battery pathway has already attracted international interest and investment. 'Around two weeks ago, Saudi Arabia committed RM10 billion for a floating solar and hydro battery project in Kenyir Lake, Terengganu,' she said. borneo hydropower energy Romanian Ambassador sarawak

Price Catcher app helps consumers compare prices, manage daily expenses
The app enables users to plan and manage their daily expenses by comparing prices of essential items across various supermarkets and selected retail premises nationwide. 15 Jul 2025 02:17pm Photo for illustration purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR - The Price Catcher mobile application, developed by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), is helping consumers compare prices of daily essentials conveniently at their fingertips. The app enables users to plan and manage their daily expenses by comparing prices of essential items across various supermarkets and selected retail premises nationwide. A Bernama check at several supermarkets around the federal capital found the prices displayed on Price Catcher to be consistent with actual prices at the premises, proving the app's reliability. However, slight price variations were observed at certain wet markets, especially in the evenings, as some traders lowered prices to clear out perishable stock. Despite its potential to help users save money amid the rising cost of living, the app remains underutilised, with many consumers still unaware of its existence. A user, Zaid Zufri, 42, said the app has been useful in helping him plan his daily spending more effectively. For housewife Syahida Ariffin, 45, the app is especially helpful in tracking the prices of controlled items such as cooking oil and chicken, which tend to fluctuate. "Price Catcher shows the lowest prices at nearby supermarkets and wet markets. I always check the app first before deciding where to shop, and I can save between RM15 and RM30 each time,' she said. The survey also found that many users are still unaware of the app's existence, including Fadilah Fauzi, 30, who admitted to shopping at the nearest supermarket without comparing prices. "But now that I know about it, I'm interested in using the app to help cut down on expenses,' she said. Private sector employee Mohd Ashraf Zamri, 35, said his busy schedule had kept him from checking prices before making purchases. "I usually buy standard chicken at RM10 per kg, but after using the app, I found that some places offer it at lower prices,' he said, after downloading the app upon being shown by a reporter. Launched in March 2019, Price Catcher currently displays the prices of 480 selected items, which are monitored regularly by KPDN at various premises, including wet markets, hypermarkets, mini markets and grocery stores. - BERNAMA More Like This

RAWANG: Three people, including a child, sustained minor injuries when a bus veered off the road and overturned in Jalan Tulip 3, Bukit Sentosa, today. Hulu Selangor police chief Superintendent Ibrahim Husin said the incident occurred about 11.30am. He said the 57-year-old driver was left unharmed, adding that there were only three passengers, aged 9, 17 and 38, at the time. "The bus, travelling from the Serendah KTM station to Bukit Sentosa, had just picked up the passengers at the Serendah government health clinic bus stop when the driver lost control at a bend," he said in a statement. Initial investigations suggest the bus experienced a brake failure before skidding and flipping onto its left side. All three passengers were taken to Selayang Hospital for treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, which carries a penalty of up to five years in jail and a maximum fine of RM15,000, upon conviction. Police are urging members of the public with information on the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.

Kuantan cops put the brakes on 65 mat rempit, issue 194 summonses
KUANTAN: A teenager performing a 'wheelie' on his motorcycle was among 65 individuals detained during the "Op Khas Samseng Jalanan" operation conducted at various locations in the state capital yesterday. The 18-year-old suspect was performing the dangerous stunt near the Pantai Sepat Muslim burial ground when he was stopped by a team of policemen. Acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said a total of 194 summonses were issued, and 24 motorcycles were seized for various offences during the operation, held between 4pm and 11pm. "All the suspects were aged between 15 and 25. Besides participating in illegal racing, they were found to be riding without valid licences, using illegally modified motorcycles, displaying incorrect registration plates, and equipping their bikes with modified exhaust pipes. "The special operation was conducted following complaints from residents that illegal street racing activities were organised near their housing settlements," he said in a statement today. Adli said the 18-year-old suspect who performed the wheelie was detained for executing the stunt along a busy road, an act that endangered not only himself but also other road users. He said the teenager is being investigated for reckless driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail sentence of five years and a fine of up to RM15,000. Meanwhile, Adli added that police will continue to carry out regular special operations to address the "mat rempit" issue and curb illegal street racing in the area. "We have identified several hotspots frequently used for illegal racing activities, including the stretch between Kampung Sungai Soi and Tanjung Lumpur here," he said.
