A man wanted on an active Department of Corrections escape warrant was safely taken into custody Monday after climbing 80 feet up a tree in Port Townsend and threatening suicide during an hours-long standoff, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies first located the suspect around 9 a.m. on May 26 near Mill Road.
In addition to the escape warrant, the man was also a suspect in two separate burglary and theft investigations in Jefferson County.
Deputies found the man's vehicle hidden in the woods and called for additional units.
Before reinforcements arrived, the suspect spotted a patrol car and ran away toward the nearby Caswell Brown Village neighborhood.
Using a drone, deputies tracked the man as he climbed a large cedar tree, climbing approximately 80 feet in an attempt to avoid arrest.
Deputy Ash Moore with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Officer Fudally with the Port Townsend Police Department led negotiation efforts after the man refused to come down and repeatedly threatened to take his own life.
For nearly eight hours, the two worked to deescalate the situation, eventually persuading the man to descend from the tree safely.
Medics evaluated him at the scene before taking him to Jefferson Healthcare as a precaution.

Macklemore's home robbed with children inside, nanny doused with bear spray, police say

Macklemore's home in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle was the site of a home invasion as his nanny was maced with bear spray and his three children were present, according to law enforcement. A police report from June 7 shared with USA TODAY said shortly before 1 a.m., a nanny for three kids was sprayed with bear mace before leading two suspects to a master bedroom where they rummaged through drawers, cabinets, and "raided" a closet full of clothing, jewelry and shoes. The mostly redacted police report features the unredacted last name Davis, the legal name of Macklemore's wife, Tricia Davis, and refers to a homeowner as a "high-profile individual." Macklemore and Davis share three children: Sloane, Colette and Hugo. Macklemore clarifies remark made at pro-Palestine concert in Seattle: 'Sometimes I slip up' The report does not state if Macklemore, whose legal name is Benjamin Haggerty, was home at the time. The police report also said the nanny "believed the crime may have been politically motivated for some reason." USA TODAY reached out to reps for Macklemore for comment. In recent months, Macklemore has made headlines for pro-Palestine posts and was removed from a Las Vegas festival performance lineup for the inaugural Neon City Festival in Las Vegas after he referred to America with an expletive during the 'Palestine Will Live Forever' event in his hometown of Seattle. The nanny described her own body language as "twitchy" to the police and said the alleged suspects were aware she still had a phone on her, so one of the two men threw her on the ground and put a boot on her ankle before moving it to the back of her neck. He also took her phone. After the nanny began to scream, she said the duo got her up and pinned her against a wall and held her mouth shut before she bit onto his hand hard, which then caused him to let go. Police say she fled through the bathroom and escaped from the house, knocking on numerous nearby homes before one homeowner opened the door and allowed her to call the police inside. Kentucky man arrested for releasing raccoon into business after previous mule-riding incidents

Quite the wild situation unfolded in small-town Kentucky recently.A Murray, Kentucky, man, who was identified by the Murray Police Department as 40-year-old Jonathan Mason, was arrested for allegedly releasing a raccoon into an open business. According to a Murray Police Department's Facebook post, Mason arrived at the unnamed business around 9:18 p.m. on June 6 and released the animal. The raccoon subsequently bit a patron inside the business, police said. Mason had already previously been warned not to return to the business, according to police. After being pulled over by police, Mason allegedly refused to roll down his window for the officers, who removed Mason from his car. The reportedly rabid raccoon's release inside the business was just the latest in a string of animal-related offenses committed by Mason, police said. In December 2024, police said a "manifestly" drunk Mason rode a mule to a liquor store. When he refused to leave, the police were called. Mason was arrested after trying to ride off on his mule, police said. Some witnesses reportedly told police they saw Mason unnecessarily whip the mule at a different business. The mule was taken away by the police. A few days later, police said Mason tried to take back his mule, also while drunk. Mason was allegedly caught riding his mule down the road and refused to stop. He was arrested again and taken to jail, police said. According to the Murray Police Department, spanning his three arrests, Mason has been charged with two counts of second-degree animal cruelty, third-degree fleeing or evading police, second-degree disorderly conduct, alcohol intoxication in a public place, two counts of third-degree criminal trespassing, two counts of resisting arrest, second-degree assault and failure of owner to maintain required insurance. Fox News Digital reached out to the Murray Police Department for additional comment but has not received a response.

EXCLUSIVE: Union City man saves woman from car explosion: ‘She would have died'

A Union City man who rescued a woman from a burning car said he had just seconds before the car exploded. 'I kept stepping over the flames,' Michael Craig told Channel 2's Audrey Washington on Tuesday. 'When the car crashed here, I came and ran right here,' Craig explained. Craig said on Monday evening, he heard a crash, ran outside, and saw the unthinkable -- a burning car in his neighbor's Rosewood Place home in Union City. 'I just saw somebody in the car, and that it was on fire,' Craig said. Fairburn firefighters posted video of the scene on their Facebook page. Fire officials said it appeared the driver somehow lost control before she slammed into the house. Craig said the driver seemed disoriented. 'Her window was down, and then she rolled it back up. And I said, 'Your car is on fire, don't do that, don't do that!' So, I had her throw me the keys and I hit the key fob to unlock the car,' Craig told Washington. 'By that time, her feet had caught on fire, and a guy got a fire extinguisher, and he sprayed her feet, and we carried her across the street,' Craig explained. The driver is now recovering. Craig said he can only imagine what could have happened. 'If I didn't come outside, she would have died. She would've burned in that car,' Craig said. 'So, you saved her life?' Washington asked. 'I did,' Craig answered. Neighbors said the homeowners are staying with family. Channel 2 Action News is working to get an update on the driver's condition.
