Economic activity surges to a 14-month high

Hans India24-06-2025
New Delhi: Indianeconomic activity has surged to a 14-month high in June as companies scaled up output in response to faster increases in total new business intakes and a record upturn in export orders, according to the HSBC flash PMI data released on Monday. The HSBC Flash India Composite Output Index – a seasonally adjusted index that measures the month-on-month change in the combined output of India's manufacturing and service sectors, climbed to a 14-month high of 61.0 in June.
Rising from 59.3 in May, the latest reading was consistent with a sharp rate of expansion that was well above the long-run series average.Manufacturers led the upturn in business activity, though growth also picked up pace in the service economy. Rates of increase were at two and ten-month highs, respectively.
With pending workloads continuing to accumulate, firms remained in hiring mode.Meanwhile, inflation softened as input costs rose at the slowest pace in ten months, the HSBC report states. According to panellists, output was boosted by favourable demand trends, efficiency gains and tech investment. The HSBC Flash India Manufacturing PMI – a weighted average of the New Orders, Output, Employment, Suppliers' Delivery Times and Stocks of Purchases indices – rose from 57.6 in May to 58.4 in June, signalling the best improvement in operating conditions since April 2024.
New business placed with goods producers and service providers increased at the end of the first fiscal quarter, with the faster upturn among the former. At the composite level, the rate of expansion was the strongest seen since July 2024, the report states.
When explaining June's rise, survey participants remarked on healthy demand conditions and successful marketing.Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, said: 'India's flash PMI indicated strong growth in June. New export orders continued to fuel private sector business activity, especially in manufacturing.'
Meanwhile, the combination of robust global demand and rising backlogs prompted manufacturers to increase hiring.'Employment growth is also healthy in the services sector despite slightly weakening on a sequential basis from May to June.
'Finally, input and output prices continued to rise for both manufacturing and services firms, but rates of increase showed signs of softening,' Bhandari added.

Amid Trump's Dead Economy Remark, India's Manufacturing Sector Roars

New Delhi: In July 2025, India's manufacturing sector showed very strong growth, with the HSBC Flash India Manufacturing PMI reaching 59.2—the highest level in nearly 17 and a half years. This means factories are doing really well, helped by strong demand both inside India and from abroad. The overall business activity, which includes both manufacturing and services, also grew fast, with the Composite PMI hitting 60.7, the quickest growth rate in over a year. Companies are seeing more sales, export orders, and production. Jobs are also picking up, especially in services, showing healthy employment growth. Manufacturers are feeling optimistic about expanding in the next year, thanks to good demand, investments in technology, and increasing their production capacity. That said, prices are rising for both raw materials and finished goods. Business confidence has dipped to its lowest in over two years because some companies worry about competition and inflation. Job creation has also slowed to the weakest in 15 months. India's private sector, especially manufacturing, is growing strongly with more orders, sales, and production, but rising costs and cautious business feelings remain concerns.

India's manufacturing sector continues to strengthen in July

Manufacturing sector conditions in India continued to strengthen in July, with the HSBC PMI climbing to a 16-month high due to faster increases in new orders, output and stocks of purchases. Firms bought extra inputs to broadly the same extent as in June, however, whilst job creation receded to the weakest since November 2024. Meanwhile, business confidence retreated to its lowest level in three years. Cost pressures intensified, though remained negligible by historical standards, while the latest increase in selling prices was stronger than the long-run series average. Rising from 58.4 in June to 59.1 in July, the seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) signalled the strongest improvement in the health of the sector since March 2024. Supporting the uptick in the headline figure was a sharp and accelerated expansion in new orders placed with Indian goods producers. Subsequently, production growth strengthened to a 15-month high in July and outpaced the series trend. Although rising international demand from across the globe reportedly contributed to the overall upturn in total sales, new export orders increased to a lesser extent than in June. Indian manufacturers remained confident of a rise in output over the course of the coming 12 months, but the overall level of positive sentiment fell to its lowest mark in three years. Charge inflation quickened only fractionally from June, but the rate of increase was above that seen for input costs and its own trend. On the purchasing side, goods producers sought to replenish their inventories by acquiring additional inputs. Elsewhere, a further improvement in vendor performance supported another increase in stocks of purchases. The latter expanded to the greatest extent in 15 months. Inventories of finished goods decreased further in July, with companies continuing to suggest that sales had been met from warehoused products.

Asia's factory activity worsens as US trade uncertainty bites, India outshines with 16-month high record

Asia's factory activity deteriorated in July as soft global demand and lingering uncertainty over U.S. tariffs weighed on business morale, private sector surveys showed on Friday, clouding the outlook for the region's fragile recovery. The surveys were taken before Japan and South Korea clinched trade deals with Washington, offering some hope that receding uncertainty could prop up manufacturing activity in coming months, some analysts say. But business confidence fell to a three-year low amid competitive pressures and inflation concerns, with a lack of progress in striking a trade deal with the U.S. adding to the gloom. Live Events China's factory activity also deteriorated in July as softening business growth led manufacturers to scale back production, boding ill for the region's economy. The S&P Global China General Manufacturing PMI fell to 49.5 in July from 50.4 in June, undershooting analysts' expectations of 50.4 in a Reuters poll and dropping below the 50 threshold that separates growth from contraction. The reading comes a day after an official survey showed China's manufacturing activity shrank for a fourth straight month in July, suggesting a surge in exports ahead of higher U.S. tariffs has started to fade while domestic demand remained sluggish. The survey "provides further evidence that China's economy lost some momentum last month, largely due to domestic weakness," said Zichun Huang, an economist at Capital Economics. The S&P Global Japan manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) also fell to 48.9 in July from 50.1 in June, a sign U.S. tariffs were hurting the world's fourth-largest economy. Most of the survey data was collected before the announcement of a Japan-U.S. trade agreement last month, which lowers tariffs imposed on Japan to 15% from a previously threatened 25%. As the trade deal with Washington kicks in, "it will be important to see if this will translate into greater client confidence and improved sales in the months ahead," said Annabel Fiddes, economics associate director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, which compiles the survey. South Korea also saw factory activity contract in July for the sixth straight month with the S&P Global PMI falling to 48.0 in July, from 48.7 in June. "Both production volumes and new orders fell at a steeper rate than that in June, with anecdotal evidence indicating that weakness in the domestic economy was compounded by the impacts of U.S. tariff policy," said Usamah Bhatti, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence. The survey was conducted from July 10 to July 23, before South Korea reached on Wednesday a trade deal with the U.S. lowering tariffs to 15% from a threatened 25%. Factory activity in July expanded in the Philippines and Vietnam, but shrank in Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia, PMIs showed.
