Israel strikes Iran near Fordow nuclear facility

Israeli forces have attacked missile launchers and infrastructure in Iran, with explosions heard near a nuclear site in Fordow.
Source: Iranian news agency Fars; The Times of Israel; BBC
Details: Media reports say two explosions occurred in the area, where the nuclear facility is located several hundred metres underground.
Herzi Halevi, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces, said Israeli forces continue to strike Iran "with full force". He said Israel remains focused on two main objectives: defence and offence.
Halevi added that the situation will become even more difficult, and Israeli forces must be ready for a range of scenarios that they have trained for.
Major General Tomer Bar, Commander of the Israeli Air Force, said the country's presence in western Iran is "critical. Every launcher we strike saves lives in the State of Israel."
The Times of Israel also reported that Iranian air defences had shot down an Israeli drone near the Fordow nuclear site.
Background:
On the night of 12-13 June, Israel attacked Tehran and its outskirts and other cities across the country. Israel described its attack as preemptive and aimed at undermining Iran's nuclear programme and targeting military facilities.
The strikes reportedly killed Major General Hossein Salami, Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Major General Gholamali Rashid, head of the IRGC's Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, and six nuclear scientists.
Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesperson for Iran's Armed Forces, said that Tehran would respond to Israel's strikes, noting that the United States would "pay dearly" despite Washington's assurances of its non-involvement.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Israel's actions as "unilateral", though the US was aware of the planned strikes.

Israel issues warning to Iran amid tit-for-tat strikes: ‘Tehran will burn'

Israel issued a stark warning to Iran on Saturday as the two Middle Eastern nations continued to exchange fire: Stop the strikes or 'Tehran will burn.' 'If [Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei continue to fire missiles at the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn,' Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz wrote on social platform X following a closed-door meeting, according to a translation. 'The Iranian dictator is making the residents of Tehran hostage to his criminal policies for the survival of his regime,' he added. His comments come after Iran launched retaliatory drone and air strikes toward Israel Friday in response to the Israeli military's surprise attack a day earlier — which targeted Tehran's nuclear facilities and ballistic missile sites. In the initial strike, several prominent officials were killed, including a close adviser of Khamenei, two top Iranian nuclear scientists, the commander and deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the deputy commander in chief of Iran's armed forces. In tit-for-tat exchange continued into Saturday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his military have vowed to cripple nuclear facilities under its Operation Rising Lion mission. Strikes overnight on Tehran killed about nine senior scientists tied to warfare developments in the Islamic republic, according to Israeli officials. '9 senior scientists and experts responsible for advancing the Iranian regime's nuclear weapons program. All of the eliminated scientists and experts, eliminated based on intelligence, were key factors in the development of Iranian nuclear weapons,' The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) wrote in a post online. 'Their elimination is a significant blow to the regime's ability to acquire weapons of mass destruction. Two other senior defense and intelligence officials were pronounced dead by the Iranian regime on Saturday, NBC News reported. Civilians have not been shielded from violence, either, as 320 people were wounded in the round of attacks on Iran and 78 more killed due to continued air strikes, per the AP. The IDF said it would continue to target East Azerbaijan and the Iranian cities of Kermanshah and Lorestan as Iran's counterattacks in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv persist. Explosions and sirens were blaring across the Jewish State overnight. Two rockets were also launched from Gaza toward Israel, although there were no corresponding injuries, officials said. Turbulence in the region has also put a damper on nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran. President Trump has sought to create a new agreement with Iran that would include dismantling its nuclear capabilities. On Friday, Trump responded to Israel's surprise strike by urging the Iranian regime to come back to the negotiating table and make a deal. 'There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end,' the president posted to Truth Social. 'Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire,' he added. 'No more death, no more destruction, JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.' Trump also suggested in a separate post that the moment was a 'second chance.' Despite the pressure, Iran signaled that it could pull out of the upcoming nuclear talks, which are scheduled for Sunday in Oman. The administration said earlier Friday that they were not involved in Israel's attack on Iran. Later in the day, however, the U.S. did begin to military shift assets and assist with shooting down incoming ballistic missiles. Tehran has also warned that it will strike ships in the Red Sea if Britain, France or the U.S. engage in warfare. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee (R), who remains in Israel, reflected on the overnight sirens that signaled air raids as several voices among Trump's allies have urged Trump to make a move on Iran. 'Been rough nite in Israel. Had to head to shelter 5 times during the nite. It's now Shabbat here. Should be quiet. Probably won't be,' Huckabee wrote Saturday on X. 'Entire nation under orders to stay near shelter.' In another post, the former Arkansas governor issued a reminder to those who want the U.S. to stay out of the conflict. 'If you hear 'Israel is no concern to USA' remember 700,000 AMERICANS live in Israel. That is equivalent to a full House District,' he continued 'More Americans here than in any other country except Mexico! ' 'Iran isn't just attacking Israel but your fellow Americans who live here,' he added.

Zelenskyy warns oil price surge could help Russia's war effort

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A sharp rise in global oil prices following Israeli strikes on Iran will benefit Russia and bolster its military capabilities in the war in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday in comments that were under embargo until Saturday afternoon. Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, Zelenskyy said the surge in oil prices threatens Ukraine's position on the battlefield, especially because Western allies have not enforced effective price caps on Russian oil exports. 'The strikes led to a sharp increase in the price of oil, which is negative for us,' Zelenskyy said. 'The Russians are getting stronger due to greater income from oil exports.' Global oil prices rose as much as 7% after Israel and Iran exchanged attacks over the past 48 hours, raising concerns that further escalation in the region could disrupt oil exports from the Middle East. Zelenskyy to address concerns with the US Zelenskyy said he planned to raise the issue in an upcoming conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump . 'In the near future, I will be in contact with the American side, I think with the president, and we will raise this issue,' he said. Zelenskyy also expressed concern that U.S. military aid could be diverted away from Ukraine toward Israel during renewed tensions in the Middle East. 'We would like aid to Ukraine not to decrease because of this,' he said. 'Last time, this was a factor that slowed down aid to Ukraine.' Ukraine's military needs have been sidelined by the United States in favor of supporting Israel, Zelenskyy said, citing a shipment of 20,000 interceptor missiles, designed to counter Iran-made Shahed drones, that had been intended for Ukraine but were redirected to Israel. 'And for us it was a blow,' he said. 'When you face 300 to 400 drones a day, most are shot down or go off course, but some get through. We were counting on those missiles.' An air defense system, Barak-8, promised to Ukraine by Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu was sent to the U.S. for repairs but never delivered to Ukraine, Zelenskyy said. The Ukrainian president conceded that momentum for the Coalition of the Willing, a group of 31 countries which have pledged to strengthen support for Ukraine against Russian aggression, has slowed because of U.S. ambivalence over providing a backstop. 'This situation has shown that Europe has not yet decided for itself that it will be with Ukraine completely if America is not there,' he said. Coalition of the Willing offer under consideration The offer of a foreign troop 'reassurance force' pledged by the Coalition of the Willing was still on the table 'but they need a backstop, as they say, from America,' Zelenskyy said. 'This means that suddenly, if something happens, America will be with them and with Ukraine.' The Ukrainian president also said the presence of foreign contingents in Ukraine would act as a security guarantee and allow Kyiv to make territorial compromises, which is the first time he has articulated a link between the reassurance force and concessions Kyiv is willing to make in negotiations with Russia. 'It is simply that their presence gives us the opportunity to compromise, when we can say that today our state does not have the strength to take our territories within the borders of 1991,' he said. But Europe and Ukraine are still waiting on strong signals from Trump. Without crushing U.S. sanctions against Russia, 'I will tell you frankly, it will be very difficult for us,' Zelenskyy said, adding that it would then fall on Europe to step up military aid to Ukraine. Body and prisoner returns follow Istanbul talks In other developments, Russia repatriated more bodies of fallen soldiers in line with an agreement reached during peace talks in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, Russian officials said Saturday, cited by Russian state media. The officials said Ukraine did not return any bodies to Russia on Saturday. Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed in a statement that Russia returned 1,200 bodies. The first round of the staggered exchanges took place Monday. The agreement to exchange prisoners of war and the bodies of fallen soldiers was the only tangible outcome of the talks in Istanbul on June 2. Russia says push continues Continuing a renewed battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the more than 1,000-kilometer (over 600-mile) front line, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed Saturday that its troops captured another village in the Donetsk region, Zelenyi Kut. The Ukrainian military had no immediate comment on the Russian claim. Russia launched 58 drones and decoys at Ukraine overnight into Saturday, according to the Ukrainian air force, which said its air defenses destroyed 23 drones while another 20 were jammed. Russia's defense ministry said it shot down 66 Ukrainian drones overnight. Attacks have continued despite discussions of a potential ceasefire in the war. During the June 2 talks in Istanbul, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators traded memorandums containing sharply divergent conditions that both sides see as nonstarters , making a quick deal unlikely. ___ Follow the AP's coverage of the war at Error! Crypto Daybook Americas: Bitcoin Weathers Market Rout as Israel Hits Iran

By Francisco Rodrigues(All times ET unless indicated otherwise) Cryptocurrencies slid as Israeli airstrikes on Iran's nuclear and missile sites roiled global sentiment and sent investors fleeing risk assets. The CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20), a measure of the broad crypto market, lost 6.1% over 24 hours, and bitcoin (BTC), seen by some as a haven investment, dropped 2.9%. Gold futures, a more traditional refuge, rose 1.3% from their close. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the overnight attack, which also targeted Iran's top military leaders, was aimed at rolling back Iran's nuclear program and missile capabilities. Iran, which has repeatedly called for Israel's destruction, responded by launching 100 suicide drones toward Israeli territory, though a more concerted reaction is anticipated. The strike came less than 24 hours after the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran was not complying with uranium enrichment limits. The U.S. said it was not involved in the attack, which killed some of Iran's military leaders. The escalation saw risk assets across the board plunge. Japan's Nikkei dropped around 0.9%, U.S. index futures fell 1.2% and the Euro Stoxx 50 lost 1.35%. U.S. crude oil futures, on the other hand, rose more than 6% to $73, with Brent crude spiking 14% at one point. Gold surged to $3,445 per ounce, approaching its all-time high. Cryptocurrencies' declines dashed gains eked out earlier in the week on the back of ETF approval speculation. Solana's sol SOL, in particular, had rallied on reports the SEC asked ETF issuers to update their S-1 filings, potentially accelerating the launch timeline. SOL is down nearly 9.5% in the last 24 hours. 'Overnight, reports surfaced that the SEC has asked Solana ETF issuers to update S-1 filings, triggering a sharp rally in SOL,' Jake Ostrovskis, an OTC trader at Wintermute, told CoinDesk. 'Bloomberg ETF analysts Eric Balchunas and James Seyffart remain optimistic, assigning a 90% probability of approval by year-end, with potential approvals coming as soon as July or within three to five weeks of the updated filings,' Ostrovskis said. As a result, he said, the market is 'now relatively underexposed to SOL and related assets, which makes the current setup particularly interesting to watch.' Despite the optimism and growing inflows into spot crypto ETFs, with BTC funds bringing in $939 million month-to-date and ETH seeing $811 million in net inflows, investors are now focused on the Middle East. Polymarket traders are weighing a 91% chance that Iran will retaliate against Israel this month, while the perceived odds of U.S. military action against Iran jumped from a mere 4% to 28%. After peaking above $55 billion on June 12, total OI dropped to a the month's low of $49.31 billion, according to Velo data. Binance shed over $2.5 billion overnight, alongside broad risk reduction across OKX, Bybit, Deribit and Hyperliquid. The pullback unwinds much of the steady build seen earlier this month. Options positioning also turned more defensive, with Deribit data showing the BTC and ETH put/call ratios climbing to 1.28 and 1.25, respectively. While upside strikes like $140K (BTC) and $3,200 (ETH) still hold large call interest, the majority of June 27 exposure remains out-of-the-money. The shift suggests growing demand for downside protection alongside lingering upside optionality. Funding remains broadly negative, especially across altcoins. ETH sits at –7.99% on Deribit and BTC at –1.06%. Sharp discounts persist for DOT (–15.2%), LINK (–15.1%) and 1000SHIB (–44.5%). HYPE (+8.27% on Hyperliquid) and AAVE (+9.95% on Bybit) are among the few to show long bias. Despite Tuesday's $1.16 billion in liquidations, leverage remains elevated. Coinglass data shows 90% of liquidations came from longs. As of June 13, bitcoin liquidation heatmaps highlight up to $84 million in long-side OI between $102K and $104K.
