
Korean job seekers want W41.4m starting salary: survey
A local job search platform Incruit researched 691 people about to graduate from college in August of this year to find their ideal and minimum first-year salary. The asking salary for this year marked a slight increase from 41.36 million won in the same survey last year.
Those wanting to work at large corporations sought 43.58 million won, those targeting middle-market enterprises wanted 38.06 million won, while respondents seeking to work at small and medium-sized enterprises said they wanted 30.93 million won for their starting salaries. When asked how they set their salary expectations, 34.9 percent said they considered the size of the companies they wish to join and the overall starting salaries of the industry they wish to work in.
Some 94.8 percent of the respondents said they consider the companies' wages when applying for a job.
The biggest factor when choosing a company was the financial compensation for work (40.1 percent), followed by possibility for employee's professional growth (14.5 percent) and the welfare benefits provided by the company (8.7 percent).
Minimum asking salary dips, possibly due to slumping job market
As for the minimum starting salary they would accept to join a company, surveyed job seekers cited 36.37 million won, down from 37 million won in last year's survey.
Incruit said the job seekers willing to work for less was due to the prolonged economic slump and the subsequent freezing of the job market. According to Statistics Korea last month, employment among Koreans aged 25-29 fell by 98,000 in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the year before, the largest on-year drop since the third quarter of 2013.
The drop in employment was much steeper than the overall population decrease of that age group, which fell by 69,000 over the same period.

South Korea's largest firms aging fast, with under-30 staff at historic low
For the first time on record, employees under 30 now make up a smaller share of the workforce than those aged 50 and above at South Korea's largest companies. According to data published Tuesday by Seoul-based research firm Leaders Index, workers under the age of 30 accounted for just 19.8 percent of employees across 124 major companies in 2024. In comparison, those aged 50 or older made up 20.1 percent. It is the first time since tracking began in 2015 that younger workers have fallen behind their older counterparts in headcount. It is also the first time the under-30 share has dropped below 20 percent. Leaders Index analyzed companies among Korea's top 500 by revenue that publicly disclose age-specific employment data in sustainability or governance reports. The decline in younger employees has been continuous and steep. In 2017, under-30s made up 31 percent of the workforce at these firms. That dropped to 21.9 percent in 2022, and slid further to 19.8 percent last year, or 221,369 workers. Over the same period, the share of employees aged 50 and older rose from 19.1 percent in 2022 to 20.1 percent in 2024, reaching 224,438. The drop has been especially pronounced in sectors that were once considered youth-driven, such as battery production. In the battery industry, the share of under-30 workers plunged nearly 10 percentage points in a single year, from 39.3 percent in 2022 to just 29.6 percent in 2023. Meanwhile, the proportion of workers in their 50s edged up from 6.2 percent to 7.3 percent. Multiple structural factors are driving this reversal. First and foremost, the size of the younger population has been shrinking rapidly. The number of people in their 50s is now more than 50 percent greater than those in their 20s, based on 2024 population data from Statistics Korea. Hiring practices have also changed. The country's long-dominant model of 'open recruitment,' where companies hire large groups of new university graduates at once, has been fading. Employers are increasingly turning to experienced workers or those with some work history. According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 82 percent of job postings in the first half of 2025 were open only to experienced applicants. Just 2.6 percent were exclusively for new graduates. 'The drop in young employees isn't sudden. It's the result of long-term shifts that are only now showing up clearly in workforce data,' Park Joo-geun, head of Leaders Index, told The Korea Herald. 'Most large companies have moved away from mass hiring of graduates. The trend now is recruiting mid-career professionals or so-called 'experienced rookies,' which naturally raises the average employee age.' Park also pointed to the impact of generative AI and automation tools, which have rapidly spread across industries since 2023. 'In a slow-growth economy, there is already little demand for additional headcount,' Park said. 'Now that even auxiliary work can be done with AI, the need to hire large numbers of new graduates has become even harder to justify.'

South Korea pays just a quarter of US drug prices: report
Prescription drug prices in South Korea are among the lowest in the developed world, with Koreans paying just 25.6 percent of what Americans pay on average for the same medicines, according to new data released by the Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization. The analysis, published Monday by KoreaBIO's Bio-Economic Research Center, compares 2022 prescription drug prices across 33 OECD member countries. Based on a February 2024 study by the RAND Corporation, supported by the US Department of Health and Human Services and using IQVIA MIDAS data, the report confirms what many in the industry have long suspected: South Korea remains one of the most affordable countries in the world for pharmaceuticals. On average, drug prices in the US are 3.9 times higher than in South Korea. For brand-name drugs, the gap grows to 7 times. Among the top 60 revenue-generating medicines in the US, prices are 8.4 times higher. Biologics are also significantly more expensive, costing over 5.7 times more than in Korea. The report also highlighted US price premiums over other major markets: 3.5 times higher than Japan, 3.3 times higher than France, 2.9 times higher than Germany, and 2.7 times higher than the United Kingdom. Turkey showed the greatest disparity, with US drug prices more than 10 times higher than those in Turkey. The report comes days after US President Donald Trump issued letters to 17 global pharmaceutical firms demanding that they lower US prices to match the 'most favored nation' level, referring to the lowest price charged in any OECD country. The companies have been given a 60-day deadline to respond.

Consumer prices rise 2.1% in July on higher industrial goods, service costs
South Korea's consumer prices grew by more than 2 percent for the second consecutive month in July, mainly driven by higher costs of industrial goods and services, government data showed Tuesday. Consumer prices, a key gauge of inflation, increased 2.1 percent from a year earlier last month, according to the data from Statistics Korea. Inflation had remained above the Bank of Korea's 2 percent target for four consecutive months through April before slowing to 1.9 percent in May. It then edged up to 2.2 percent in June. The statistics agency said the July gain was mainly due to the continued depreciation of the South Korean won, which pushed up import prices for industrial goods. A steady increase in service prices also added to inflationary pressure. Among industrial goods, prices of processed food products jumped 4.1 percent on-year, adding 0.35 percentage point to July's overall inflation. While agricultural product prices inched down 0.1 percent from a year earlier, prices of livestock and fisheries products rose 3.5 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively. In contrast, petroleum product prices fell 1 percent on-year, reversing an increase in the previous month. The service sector continued its upward trend, posting a 2.3 percent on-year gain. Within the sector, utility costs, such as electricity and gas, increased 1.6 percent, while water charges advanced 2.7 percent. Among personal services, prices for dining out rose 3.2 percent from a year earlier, and non-dining services climbed 3.5 percent.
