Romeo Sensini takes giant leap forward with Roscommon win
Unplaced on his debut here last week, Romeo Sensini, a son of Magna Grecia, took a significant step forward to bolt up, for the Slatterys, in the Irish EBF Auction Series 2-Y-0 Maiden at Roscommon, powering clear up the straight to slam Check This Out by 10 lengths.
'He was very green and raw behind horses last week and never got going,' explained trainer Andy Slattery Sr. 'But he's a nice horse and came on a lot for the run. There's a Hong Kong connection with his owners, so he might end up out there.'
Placed in his three previous starts, the Joseph O'Brien-trained Omni Man opened his account when easily brushing aside front-running odds-on favourite Mocking in the JTW Distribution Roscommon Race.
Having stalked the pace, Declan McDonogh asked the Invincible Spirit colt to tackle the favourite with less than two furlongs to race and, soon in command, he stretched away to triumph by seven and a half lengths.
Michael Halford, representing O'Brien, said: 'He's a nice, big, progressive horse. He loved the ground and the step-up in trip and Declan said he quickened well when he asked him. The race set up lovely for him and he should improve with racing.'
Having ridden three winners in England last week, Shane Foley hit the target for his boss Jessica Harrington when guiding Thrifty Of Digby to a gutsy, all-the-way win in the Abbey Hotel Roscommon Handicap, holding off Vierson by a length and a quarter.
'It wasn't the plan to make it,' admitted Foley. 'But, after watching the first few races, I decided to let her roll along after the way she jumped – we reverted to Plan B. She enjoyed the ground and being in front and it all worked out well.'
Upped in trip, the Paddy Magee-trained Coulstys Way, a seven-race maiden, readily reversed Tipperary form with hot favourite Onemoredance (fourth) in the (0-70) Racing Again Here On June 9th Handicap.
The four-year-old filly was an eighth winner of the season for talented 3lb claimer Robert Whearty.
And Wesley Joyce was seen to good effect on the Philip Byrne-trained nine-year-old Out On Friday, also adopting successful, front-running tactics in the Garvey's Bar Ballintubber Handicap, the gelding's eighth success.

Fairyhouse preview: King Cuan expected to return to winning ways while O'Brien's go head-to-head in 2-year-old Maiden
A three-time winner as a juvenile in 2023, King Cuan will be expected to return to winning ways in the four-runner Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction race in Fairyhouse on Friday. The Tasleet gelding, trained by Paddy Twomey, has started favourite for each of his five starts, shaping with plenty of promise despite a tardy start on his debut at the Curragh back in May 2023. He went unbeaten for the rest of that season, impressing in a Cork maiden in September before landing a couple of valuable sales races in Naas. King Cuan, owned by the Red Lily Racing Syndicate, justified 4/7 favouritism when beating Jakajaro by a length in the Goffs Sportsmans Challenge. He subsequently coped with the step-up to seven furlongs when getting the better of Duplantis by a head in the Irish EBF Auction series Final. Unfortunately, injury kept King Cuan off the track for all of 2024. However, he made a satisfactory return to action in the listed Cork Stakes at Cork in early April, coming from the back of the field to make his challenge at the furlong-pole before weakening to finish fifth, beaten by three lengths behind Lady With The Lamp who went on to score again at listed level in Chelmsford. Although rated 1lb. below rival Tango Flare, King Cuan is expected to have the edge and might have most to fear from Noel Meade's Naas maiden winner Rowdy Yeats, a distant second to the selection's stable-companion Currawood at Cork last time. Although Carriganog colt Green Soul was unlucky when pipped by Leblon Queen on his debut at Roscommon, Ballydoyle hope Extravagant is preferred on the basis of his likely improvement from a debut second to Green Sense at the Curragh. Another imposing son of Wootton Bassett, Extravagant hit a flat spot before staying on late at the Curragh and, expected to prove more effective over this longer trip, should be tough to beat. Ger O'Leary's Local Lad, fourth in a conditions race at Kempton last time, boasts a rating of 92 and sets a decent standard in the Fairyhouse For BBQs Maiden. Meanwhile, Gordon Elliott might double-up with Jigoro and Grimaud on Clonmel's hurdles card. Outpointed by Intellotto over fences in Limerick, Jigoro looks like the one to beat in the Bulmers Original Hurdle. Grimaud, who performed creditably when fourth to the classy Sunchart in Wexford, has Henry de Bromhead's course winner Trasna Na Pairce in the Botanica International Rated Novice Hurdle. And, despite an 8lb. hike for a smooth success at Wexford, Onebrightbluerose might follow-up in the Bulmers Zero Handicap Hurdle.

Rogue Legend completes quickfire double in Tipperary
Just seven days on from his maiden success in Cork, Rogue Legend bagged the €25,000 Irish EBF Median Sires Series 2-Y-0 Race in Tipperary, highlight of a treble for Billy Lee and a double for trainer Paddy Twomey. Always prominent along the stands rail, the grey son of Havana Grey stretched clear in great style in the final furlong to slam Howd'yadoit by three and a quarter lengths. 'The trainer hasn't planned it very well, asking him to carry so much weight in his races,' acknowledged Twomey. 'But he keeps improving and is learning on the job. And we've no choice but to step into stakes company now. 'He's owned by a very enthusiastic syndicate (the Rogues Gallery Partnership). There are 27 of them involved and I'm sure they'll be thinking about Royal Ascot. But there's a listed race back here in early July (the Tipperary Stakes on July 2) which his trainer thinks might be a good spot for him.' Newcomer Pharos Freedom, a son of Starspangledbanner, brought up the Twomey double and Lee's treble when landing the Tipperary Town Maiden over an extended mile and a half. He recovered from a tardy start, was soon handy and, sent for home turning into the straight, stayed on dourly to beat fellow debutant Ardashir by almost two lengths, the pair stretching eight lengths clear of the rest. 'He's a good tough horse and has done all his work with (recent listed winner) Carmers, working equally as well as him,' stated the winning trainer. 'He's out of a Galileo mare and stays well. He'll have no problem stepping up in trip.' Lee had registered the second leg of his treble when Shoney, a Mehmas filly, trained for Michael Ryan by Willie McCreery, made all for an emphatic win in the five-furlong maiden, scooting clear to beat Memphis Rose by four and a quarter lengths. 'She's not very big but she has a lot of heart and tries very hard,' said McCreery. 'She broke well. Billy was able to dictate things and she picked-up well. Michael is big into breeding, so we'll try to get some black type for her.' Slowly away when fourth in Cork last time, course and distance scorer Sarahmae made amends in style when justifying 5-1 favouritism in the five-furlong SIS Supporting Irish Racing Handicap, racing prominently throughout before asserting and beating Beano Power comfortably. 'She missed the start and was unlucky in Cork,' explained Denis Hogan. 'But she's improving, likes an ease in the ground and had won here in the spring. Joey (Sheridan) gets a good tune out of her and I think we'll freshen her up and hope to move up through the grades with her.' In Ballinrobe, Sean Flanagan, on his second day back after injury, provided Barry Connell with a double, courtesy of 4-6 shot Net Boy, who survived a last flight mistake to take a division of the Sheridan Electric Maiden Hurdle, and Tannery Park (9-1) in the FBD Handicap Hurdle. On a night when four odds-on favourites obliged, the biggest shock came when the Willie Mullins-trained 8/13 shot Last Kingdom was outpointed by 66/1 shot A Snow White Park, a four-year-old filly and racecourse debutante, ridden by Danny Mullins for his mother Mags.
