Tobacco, jewelry store, more charges found on MATA's credit card

Yahoo24-04-2025

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Thousands spent at Target, Amazon and Best Buy. Thousands more in catering and dinners.
WREG investigators found some interesting charges on the Memphis Area Transit Authority's executive credit cards including a tobacco shop and a local jewelry store.
We uncovered eight years worth of monthly credit card statements detailing just how MATA was spending your taxpayer money.
► Part One of this series: MATA credit cards show thousands spent on domestic, international travel
We asked for these credit card statements back in September when MATA announced it was in a $60 million dollar deficit and again this year. With help from the Reporter's Committee for the Freedom of the Press, MATA turned them over per the Tennessee Records Act.
Since 2017, you can see the number of food-related charges we tallied drastically spiked in 2022 and 2023. The totals include dinners as well as catering bills.
We saw more than $4,600 spent at Chick-fil-A, $1,200 at Panera, and around $2,900 at Torchys.
Thousands more was spent at Subway and Pizza shops.
Hundreds more were spent on dinners, some charged on the former Deputy C.E.O. and former interim C.E.O. Bacarra Mauldin's card at Folk's Folly Prime Steakhouse, Fancy's Fish House, and Coastal Fish.
Other charges we found include $5,600 dollars between December 2017 through 2024 just for flowers.
Thousands more were spent at Target, Best Buy, Amazon, and Party City. The statements didn't break down what was purchased.
They also don't explain these charges — in October 2019, $148 was spent at a tobacco shop in Washington D.C. Two years later, $823 was spent at Mednikow Jewelers for a 'jewelry repair/sale,' and in January 2024, $1,100 at Mont Blanc, which sells designer ballpoint pens.
We also saw charges at Top Golf, bowling alleys, and more than $1,000 at a bar on Beale.
There were even bigger expenses, like in January 2018, during the same time as Elvis Presley's birthday event was taking place. There were two charges totaling almost $20,000 dollars at Graceland's hotel, the Guest House.
In 2022, we totaled around $16,000 was spent at AutoZone Park.
Then in 2023, MATA's board unanimously approved a FedExForum box suite, which brought its marketing contract with the Memphis Grizzlies to $500,000.
The credit card statements show another $27,000 dollars was spent at FedExForum on food and drinks. Statements show popcorn, soda, mac and cheese, sliders and chicken tenders were charged to the company card.
MATA spent millions on new office, furniture, Grizzlies suite, more
All the while, bus riders stressed how long it was taking them to get to work.
'A lot of them out here. A lot work at McDonald's. They work at places. They have to get to work,' a MATA bus rider said in 2020.
'It is unacceptable for this transportation to be like it is. It's unacceptable for these bus riders to be going through what they're going through,' a bus rider union rep. Sammie Hunter stated in November 2021.
That same month, MATA put $28,000 on their American Express.
'Our transit vision calls for much higher frequencies, but we don't have the funding,' MATA's Director of Planning told us back then.
It was a sentiment repeated again and again by MATA officials the next several years.
MATA deputy CEO fired after investigation into spending
We recently caught up with Hunter. He told us his wait for the bus still takes hours.
'We wanted shelters. We wanted buses and better timing on these routes. We didn't get it,' he said. 'Had they listened to us, we wouldn't be at this point. We wouldn't be where we are now.'
MATA's new interim CEO, John Lewis, said his team is questioning $144,000 on the former executives' company credit cards.
'Office supplies, parking, dues and subscriptions,' interim CEO John Lewis told the MATA board in March.
He said city officials, as well as the state's Comptroller's Office, have been made aware.

The World's Largest Retailers 2025: Amazon Tops List Of Global Retailers Ahead Of Tariff Impact

Tariffs are all anyone in retail can talk about. But as global retailers prepare for higher prices and decreased consumer spending the world's largest companies can bank on a past year of growth. Jeff Bezos' Amazon ranked fifth in Forbes' Global 2000 and reigned up top for retailers for the second year in a row after being briefly displaced by Walmart in 2023. The company saw a healthy growth in overall sales to $638 billion, up 8% from last year. Holding strong are competitors Walmart (18), Alibaba (33), Home Depot (67) and Costco (93), which round up the five largest retailers on the Global 2000. Forbes uses data from FactSet research to create its annual list of the largest public companies based on assets, market value, sales and profit. Companies are ranked over their market value as of April 25, 2025. All largely benefitted from the increase in consumer spending over the year, which rose 5.2% to $724.1 billion from April 2024 to April 2025 in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. But not all benefitted equally. Pharmacy retailers CVS and Walgreens dropped 10 (now ranked 74th) and 167 (ranked 856th) slots respectively due to profit decreases. Both firms have suffered from a pullback in retail pharmacy shopping, with Walgreens posed to go private in a by Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm specializing in consumer investments. Including debt and possible future payouts, the deal is valued at $23.7 billion. The company saw a net loss of $6 billion last year. CVS suffered losses from high medical payments in health insurance subsidiary Aetna, leading the company to change up its leadership and wind down its Affordable Care Act business. Still, its profit decreased 37% to $4.6 billion on $37.3 billion in revenue. Forbes leading retailing company Amazon, has its own pharmacy aspirations. The company launched a new medication support package for Medicare patients on top of its online pharmacy offering as it tries to take market share away from the legacy players. Among the 80 retail companies that made this year's Global 2000 list sit five newcomers. Pet marketplace Chewy, the sole new American company, climbed 755 spots (now ranked 1,554) thanks to a final quarter of customer growth after two years of decline. Pet parents' one-time purchases and subscriptions to necessities like food and medicines pushed revenues to $11.8 billion, up 6.4% from last year. International newcomers include Brazilian retail chain Lojas Americanas ( think Target) which has slowly turned the company around after filing for bankruptcy in 2024 due an accounting scandal. Now valued at $206 million, the company is looking to launch a credit card program and a new loyalty program as part of its post-bankruptcy restructure. German retailer Zalando, known among GenZ and Millennial consumers for its tech-forward approach, has enjoyed a 4% growth in sales to $11.4 billion last year. Still, the impact of tariffs are looming on retailers globally. U.S. retailers Target (242), Best Buy (907) and Macy's (1,327) have already revised revenue and profit guidance down for the year as companies and consumers have frontloaded their spending in the first half of the year.

I replaced my corporate salary by starting a photo booth business. Now, I coach entrepreneurs on finding their niche.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Ben Hawes, a comedy musician and side hustle coach based in New York City. It has been edited for length and clarity. I moved to New York when I was 22, and I was really in pursuit of security. My parents had steady jobs throughout their whole careers, and they were able to retire comfortably — I saw what their jobs had done for them, and I really wanted to climb the corporate ladder, too, so I joined ClassPass, which was a big, growing company at the time. I was making a name for myself there when, five years later, in 2020, the pandemic happened. The CFO said we were recession-proof, but we certainly were not pandemic-proof. When all the gyms closed, the company had to let go of a lot of people — I was one of them. I spent 10 months unemployed. During that time, one of the things I did to keep myself busy was build a job-hunting network that grew to about 250 people. It was a Slack channel and a blog, and it was a nice way for people to connect. But then I actually developed a merch store for it, and that's what became most successful about it. Shortly after that, I started my photo booth side hustle, called Rent My Booth. I'd go to events, and essentially just make people smile and have fun at parties with my booth, with fun backgrounds and props, and my camera. It wasn't enough to get by on its own at that point, so I started another corporate job. I was there for three years, and when I got laid off again in January 2024, it was the catalyst I needed to finally accept the fact that I just need to do my own stuff and be on my own, making my living from my own endeavors. Now, I have a few small businesses to diversify my income streams. I still do my photo booths, and I tour performing musical comedy in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. I'm scaling my business up, but I make enough to pay my bills. With just 10 photo booth events a month, I can replace my corporate salary, which takes about 60 hours of work at the events, plus an hour or two a day to promote the business and do administrative things. My friends started noticing that I was always busy with some new project. I'm a doer, and a lot of creative people get in their head about how to get started, whether that's launching a new website, starting a podcast, or opening a business of their own. It was a friend who actually suggested that I start teaching people how I do it. So I started coaching I wrote a book on Amazon called "How to Start" about finding and starting a side hustle. I started meeting with people on a weekly basis who would have an idea, and I would basically help them bring it to life. What I do is not really business coaching, because I don't think that what I'm necessarily going to be the best at is training you over two years to make your business successful, but what I am really good at is helping you bring an idea to life. It's more like creative launch consulting, so if someone wanted to start a Shopify store or an Etsy store, start a podcast, or start something else for their business or even just something for themselves, I'm someone who can really help get you going. That often takes the form of creative services and content production, because I find that what a lot of people really need are the technical skills of making a website, or editing a podcast, and things like that. But I'm also there to be a cheerleader and help you get out of your own way. I coach people one-on-one, but I realized one of the interesting things about side hustle coaching is that someone who needs an extra $300 a month probably shouldn't be paying a coach $1,000 a month. So, to make it more accessible, I make it about content creation, and I do some workshops that people can pay $10 or $20 to attend. When I talk to a new client for side hustle coaching, I start by telling them that it requires optimism and an ability to rise above the highs and the lows. To go full-time with your endeavors is not a one-month thing; it's not something you do quickly. You build over time. And I stress to them that I'm working every day. I don't really have weekends, every day I'm doing something for the sale of a photo booth or building a website or some kind of creative endeavor. The other big thing is that you have to be authentic. If you think of the fundamentals of business, they're all about relationships and customer service, and it has to be genuine. It has to be something you care about deeply and that you will be OK with spending 18 hours a day on. If you're trying to put out something that doesn't feel authentic or feels half-assed, double-check with yourself that you're proud of it. And if you yourself are proud of it, you will be more likely to be successful as an entrepreneur, because in order to thrive at a side hustle, you have to talk about it all the time and promote yourself constantly. Don't fall for some online guide that tells you that you can make $10,000 a month in three simple steps; it takes real work to rely on yourself full-time. But you've got to choose your challenge. It's hard to work for yourself, but it's hard to work for someone else, too. So decide which one you'd rather do, be bold, and go for it.
