Government mulls proposal to establish TVET Commission

The Suna day ago

MELAKA: The government is mulling over the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students.
'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs.
'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Ministry of Finance, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions.'
Anwar said this when opening the National TVET Day 2025 celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, here today.

Malaysia condemns Israeli strike on Iran, PM Anwar calls attack ‘reckless' and warns of threat to global peace

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned Israel's military strike on Iran, which reportedly killed a senior Iranian leader. Anwar said Malaysia called on Israel's allies, especially those with influence and the power to exert pressure, to use all available means to halt further acts of aggression, according to a report in Berita Harian today. He stressed that the international community must not allow actions that sabotage diplomatic efforts and threaten global peace to continue unchecked. 'This attack is a reckless and serious act that further endangers the stability of an already fragile region. 'The intention is clear — to derail the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran,' he said in a social media post today. Anwar added that the attack came at a time when Israel's actions in Gaza are facing increasing scrutiny and political pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that Israel would face severe consequences following the deadly attack on the Islamic republic earlier this morning. Iran's military also vowed a strong response to the Israeli strike, with its air defence forces placed on full alert following the early Friday morning assault. According to Iranian state TV, military spokesperson Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said both Israel and the United States would 'pay a heavy price' for the attack. I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the Israeli military strikes in Iran, including targeted attacks that have killed senior Iranian is a grave and reckless act, one that threatens to further destabilise a fragile region. Malaysia to host 19th Southeast Asian Librarians Congress

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will host the 19th Southeast Asian Librarians Congress (Consal), a four-day event beginning this Monday at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, announced the Ministry of National Unity (KPN). In a statement today, the ministry said the congress, themed 'Embracing Inclusivity, Empowering Humanity,' is scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The congress aligns with Malaysia's Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025 and reflects the nation's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation anchored in the values of unity, knowledge and inclusive societal development. 'The congress will focus on the role of libraries as strategic partners in community development, catalysts of knowledge ecosystems for marginalised and differently abled groups, and supporters of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in bridging social gaps,' KPN said. The ministry added that the MADANI government is committed to positioning the 19th Consal as a key platform to advance libraries as agents of social transformation and human empowerment, in line with national and regional unity objectives. This marks the third time Malaysia is hosting the event, following previous editions in 1981 and 1996. Established in 1970 through a joint initiative by librarians from Malaysia and Singapore, Consal serves as a key platform uniting librarians, library institutions, schools of library and information science, and information professionals from across Southeast Asia. Its membership comprises all 10 ASEAN countries: Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

PM: Govt mulls discount on police cooperative's old, bad debts

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will consider the possibility of writing off old and irrecoverable debts under the Royal Malaysia Police Cooperative Bhd (RMPC), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. However, Anwar said any such move must be carried out responsibly, with a focus on ensuring the cooperative's sustainable management. "I do not think it is reasonable for us to write off everything, but I believe that with good management and solid performance, we can offer a reasonable reduction," he said in his keynote address at the RMPC Annual General Meeting. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, requested that the Home Ministry provide him with the cooperative's financial report to be presented to the Finance Ministry.
