2025 Expo Osaka: Nonsmoking Rule Not Being Observed at Expo Site; Contradicts Fair's Themes of Life, Health
People related to a foreign pavilion smoke at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo site in Konohana Ward, Osaka, on April 13.
OSAKA — The nonsmoking rule is not being followed consistently at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo site.
Some people have been seen smoking near ashtrays placed outside certain pavilions. The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, which has banned smoking at the site as the Expo is centered around the theme of life, is struggling to find ways to handle the issue.
A red ashtray was placed discreetly in the shadow behind one foreign pavilion. Four men wearing access passes around their necks began to smoke while chatting on Friday morning. Another ashtray was also found near a different foreign pavilion.
As the Expo promotes the themes of life and health, the association has totally banned smoking at the Expo site on the artificial island of Yumeshima in Konohana Ward, Osaka, requiring both visitors and pavilion operators to adhere to the rule.
Two smoking areas have been set up outside the East Gate, which is connected to Yumeshima Station on Osaka Metro Co.'s Chuo Line. However, it takes time to go back and forth between these areas and inside the venue.
'I understand it's the rule, but it's still quite inconvenient,' a 49-year-old man who works at a merchandise store in the venue said. 'I can understand why some people secretly smoke.'
Smoking in the venue poses the risk of causing an accident. Yumeshima is built on reclaimed land, the western part of which is made up of incinerated ash from waste materials that could emit methane gas.
A spark ignited methane gas while bathrooms were being constructed on the west side of the venue last year, causing an explosion. Explosive levels of gas were detected in the western area during the rehearsal conducted just prior to the Expo's opening.
Some within the association are proposing the creation of smoking areas in safe places that are strictly separated from nonsmoking areas.
'We want to find a way to accommodate both smokers and nonsmokers,' a senior association official said.

Nepal Pavilion Finally Opens at Osaka Expo
News from Japan Society Jul 19, 2025 17:18 (JST) Osaka, July 19 (Jiji Press)--The pavilion of Nepal opened at the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, western Japan, on Saturday. It was the only pavilion which had not opened by Saturday. More than three months after the Expo began on April 13, all of the foreign pavilions of the 158 countries and regions and seven international organizations participating in the event are now open. After a ceremony for related people, the Nepal Pavilion opened to the general public around 12:30 p.m. It attracted many visitors, including those who came to see "the last pavilion." Nepal was among the countries that opted for the "Type A" format in which pavilions are built by themselves. However, according to informed sources, the Nepal Pavilion's construction was suspended in January due to delays in payments to the contractors, and work resumed on June 16. Durga Bahadur Subedi, Nepal's ambassador to Japan, told reporters on Saturday that the pavilion took a long time to open because of delays in materials procurement and labor shortages. Osaka: Little Turtle Spotted Living near Belgian Pavilion at Osaka-Kansai Expo, And Finds Permanent Home
OSAKA — A little turtle was found living in an artificial pond in front of the Belgian Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo in Osaka. According to the pavilion, the turtle was first spotted on May 11. Since then, its popularity was growing among visitors as it swam in the pond or walked along the water's edge. The turtle is about 5 centimeters long and believed to be a young red-eared slider. Red-eared sliders, or Mississippian turtles, are indigenous to North America and were brought to Japan as exotic pets. They used to be sold by street vendors and became very popular. Today, keeping them as a pet is allowed, but it is prohibited to sell or buy them or release them outdoors because they are harmful to the ecosystem. According to an expert on this species, the turtle found near the pavilion seems very young, so it is possible that it was hatched on Yumeshima Island, the artificial island where the Expo is taking place. The pavilion could not release the turtle into the wild under Japanese law, and it would have been difficult for the staff to keep it there. Yet leaving it alone could lead to its death. When the pavilion called for the turtle to be adopted on its social media, many people offered to take it in. An elementary school boy and his mother from Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, were chosen to take the turtle, and it was handed over on June 26.

Angola Pavilion Reopens at Osaka Expo
News from Japan Guide to Japan Society Travel Jun 26, 2025 13:03 (JST) Osaka, June 26 (Jiji Press)--The pavilion of Angola reopened Thursday at the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, western Japan, following its closure from the day after the Expo's opening. Nepal is now the only one of the 158 countries and regions participating in the event whose pavilion has not opened. The Angola Pavilion opened on April 13 but closed the next day for technical reasons. The pavilion completed the procedures needed for its reopening on Tuesday, according to the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition. Subcontractors engaged in the construction of the Angola Pavilion set up "victims association" over unpaid construction costs. As the involvement of a contractor without a construction license has also come to light, and the Osaka prefectural government launched an investigation, informed sources said.
