Novo Nordisk to phase out its largest insulin brand in India

In a move which could shake up the diabetes market,
Novo Nordisk
is discontinuing the country's largest selling insulin, Human Mixtard, among other older insulin brands in India.

Human Mixtard
alone is a Rs 800 crore brand for Novo Nordisk in India, despite it being under price control. Besides Human Mixtard, the phase-out could impact its top brands in the Rs 5,000 crore insulin market including Actrapid, Insulatard, Insulin Detemir and Levemir and Xultophy — marketed mostly in the format of pre-filled disposable pen and cartridges (Penfill and FlexPen).
The company recently informed its marketing partner, Abbott India that the products would be discontinued once the current stocks are exhausted, documents accessed by TOI said.
This could take about six months.
The decision is in line with the global strategy of the Danish company to prioritise newer, patented blockbuster diabetes and weight loss therapies including
Ozempic
and
Wegovy
, due to their higher profitability, sources said. Also, it seems to be potentially in line with its plans to introduce these therapies in the Indian market this year.
As part of its global strategy, earlier generation insulin products will be discontinued globally in a gradual manner.
An email sent on April 17 to the company went unanswered.
However, the company plans to continue selling Human Mixtard, Actrapid and Insulatard, in vials — which can be delivered to patients through injections. This may limit the access further as insulin delivery from pen devices is preferred by a huge majority of diabetics over vials injected with syringes, due to its accuracy, ease of dosing, and reduced stigma, a survey said earlier.

11-year-old tests positive for rare amoebic infection

Kozhikode: Amid the growing concerns over rising cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis in Kerala , a 11-year-old girl from Chelari in Malappuram tested positive for the rare brain infection. Meanwhile, the death of a 67-year-old woman from Vengara in Malappuram on Aug 9 is also suspected to have been caused by the disease. With the latest case, the number of patients under treatment at Kozhikode Medical College has risen to three, the others being a three-month-old infant from Omassery and a 40-year-old man from Annassery. Earlier, a nine-year-old girl from Thamarassery had succumbed to the disease on Aug 14. Authorities said the 11-year-old girl was admitted to the medical college on Tuesday with high fever and tests conducted at the microbiology lab confirmed amoebic encephalitis infection. Superintendent of the institute of maternal and child Health at the medical college, Dr Arun Preet said that the condition of the child was stable and treatment, as per the approved guidelines, has started. Meanwhile, health department has begun steps to identify the water source from which she could have contracted the infection. It was found that she had bathed in a local stream near her home at Padat Alungal and used a swimming pool under Kozhikode corporation limits on July 28. "We have collected water samples from the local stream. She developed fever on Jul 7 and sought treatment at Tenhipalam family health centre and later at a private hospital. She was shifted to the medical college on Tuesday," said Tenhipalam health inspector Sreejith K M. Authorities put up warning boards asking people not to bathe in the stream where the girl had taken a dip. Also, the panchayat secretary issued a directive urging people not to bathe in public waterbodies. He added that a fever survey was done in 120 homes in the area. According to integrated disease surveillance programme figures, six suspected amoebic meningoencephalitis cases and two suspected deaths were reported in Kerala this month. Since the beginning of 2025, Kerala has recorded 20 suspected cases and six suspected deaths. Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is mostly linked to bathing or swimming in waters containing the amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, which lives in warm and shallow lakes and rivers. It is considered a free-living organism because it doesn't need a host to live. The infection occurs when the infected water goes into the nose and the amoeba then moves to the brain where it destroys brain tissue. In very rare cases, it can be caused by amoeba strains like Balamuthia mandrillaris which can get into your body through a wound or through dust. Tailors, weavers, clerks are under construction workers' welfare board, says CAG

Bengaluru: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Wednesday pulled up Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board for irregular and unauthorised expenditure of Rs 259 crore during the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020. In a report tabled in the legislature, CAG said the board had initially proposed a preventive health training and check-up programme for five lakh registered construction workers across the state. Its first proposal in July 2020, estimated at Rs 10 crore, was rejected by the finance department, which sought more clarity. A second proposal in Dec 2020 was also blocked after the finance department demanded justification for awarding the project to three agencies directly, without following the tender process, and for seeking 4(g) exemption under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act. He also sought administrative approval to implement the scheme on a pilot basis in Dharwad circle for Rs 9 crore. Soon after, the board decided to split the same work into 30 individual projects, thereby avoiding the need for cabinet approval, and proceeded to call for quotations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Here's what a microbiologist says CNA Read More Undo The board later approved these projects post-facto in June 2022, citing exemption under Section 4(a) that was originally provided during the first and second waves of Covid-19 for supply of food and ration kits to labourers. The CAG noted, "Thus, the award of contracts from Sept 2021 to May 2022 in contravention to the act/rules resulted in irregular expenditure of Rs 258.8 crore." Responding to the audit, the govt said in Aug 2024 that the work was entrusted directly since a 4(a) exemption was accorded and that there was no contravention of rules. However, CAG rejected this defence, stating the reply was "unacceptable" as it was meant to address the Covid-19 emergency and criticised the labour department for approving work by splitting them into 30 sub-works of Rs 10 crore each despite finance department objections and without cabinet approval. The report also flagged irregularities in the registration of members. Of the board's 42.5 lakh registered workers, CAG found a significant number were not actually construction workers. A random survey of 399 applicants who registered through the Seva Sindhu portal revealed beneficiaries included tailors, clerks, weavers, and others from unrelated professions. The audit recommended that the board devise a mechanism to identify and weed out ineligible beneficiaries. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Government proposes exempting life & health insurance for individuals from GST

Representative image NEW DELHI: The Centre has proposed exempting life and health insurance policies for individuals from the ambit of GST, the head of a panel of ministers set up by the GST council said on Wednesday, a move that is expected to provide relief to large sections of consumers. Bihar deputy chief minister and convenor of the panel of ministers on health and insurance Samrat Choudhary said the Centre's proposal is clear that individual insurance policies should be exempt from GST. "This has been discussed and the GoM report will be presented to the council," Choudhary was quoted as saying. He also said all members have given their approval for lowering rates and some states have given their own views. He said a final call issue would be taken by the GST council when it meets. Telangana deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, a member of the GoM , said it was made clear that the benefit of GST should go to policyholders and not companies and a mechanism needs to be worked on to ensure this. He also pointed to the fact nearly Rs 9,700 crore annual revenue loss is estimated due to the GST exemption to individual insurance policies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The 13-member panel on health and insurance was set up in Sept to draw up a roadmap on the issue and it is expected to submit its report by October. The panel includes ministers from UP, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. "The proposed reduction of GST on health and life insurance from 18% to nil (exempt) shows how GST has evolved from just a way to collect revenue to a tool for advancing national goals. It can help promote financial inclusion, strengthen healthcare, and support key initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and universal coverage," said Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner, EY India. "This change could be very important for both customers and the insurance industry. For individuals, especially senior citizens and low-income families, it could make insurance more affordable."
