Peoria Sheriff recognizes deputy and correctional officer of the year

Yahoo14-05-2025
PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. (WMBD) — The Peoria County Sheriff, Chris Watkins, recognized two coworkers for their outstanding service on Wednesday.
Detective Cody Meeks was recognized as the Deputy of the year in 2024, and Christian Reece was named Correctional Officer of the year for 2024, according to Watkins.
Meeks started working with the sheriff's office in 2012 in the patrol division and became a detective in 2022. As the department's Crimes Against Children detective, Watkins said he successfully brought charges against multiple child sexual assault and pornography cases.
His work was also recognized by the Pediatric Resource Center, which named him the 2024 Champion of Children.
Watkins also said, as a member of the ATF Taskforce, he helped seize 198 guns, 14 Glock switches, two silencers and a significant amount of drugs, including meth, cocaine, heroin and marijuana.
'Detective Meeks, your dedication, professionalism, and relentless pursuit of justice make you an exceptional asset to the Peoria County Sheriff's Office,' Watkins said. 'We are proud to recognize you as the 2024 Deputy of the Year.'
Christian Reece was recognized as the Correctional Officer of the year for his commitment to maintaining safety, security and respect.
'Your actions consistently embody the core values of the department, demonstrating leadership, fairness, and compassion in even the most challenging circumstances,' Watkins said.
Watkins said his efforts did not go unnoticed by his peers, and the award is a token of gratitude for Reece's tireless efforts.

Attorney for father of Abundant Life school shooter asks to dismiss case, citing 'disregard of truth'

MADISON – The father of the Abundant Life Christian School student who shot and killed two people at the school is asking a Dane County judge to dismiss the charges against him, citing a "reckless disregard of the truth" in the complaint filed against him. Jeffrey Rupnow and his attorney, Lisa Goldman, in an Aug. 18 motion, argued that the fact his daughter, Natalie Rupnow, was able to access the family's gun safe didn't mean her father allowed her to. The motion acknowledged that Jeffrey Rupnow told his daughter the combination to the safe was his Social Security number in reverse, but argued he never gave her the numbers or any other clues. More: Father of Abundant Life school shooter will stand trial for providing guns used in attack The document also points to text messages sent by Rupnow in the days before the shooting, in which he tells friends that "my kid would shoot me" if he left the safe open, which alluded to him believing that Natalie could not access the guns inside. "There are no facts in the Complaint or elicited at the Preliminary Hearing that assert Rupnow thought or knew his daughter could access the gun safe on December 16, 2024," the document says. By alleging that Rupnow owning guns led to his daughter's actions at the school, the state is violating his Second Amendment rights to bear arms, the motion says. The motion also argues that Rupnow did not know how his daughter was planning a school shooting online with older friends. The documents says Rupnow was not allowed access to Natalie's laptop or her room, which she had deemed a "safe space." It also states that Rupnow did not know his daughter to be suicidal or a danger to others. "The State's inference that Rupnow knew (Natalie Rupnow) was suicidal and contributed to her delinquency by joining a gun club, facilitating her participation in a gun class which she passed, encouraging her to participate in Rimfire at the gun club, is an impermissible inference given nobody believed N.R. was suicidal or homicidal since October 2021," the document says. More: Mother of Abundant Life Christian School shooter dies by apparent suicide Natalie Rupnow died by suicide after opening fire inside a study hall at Abundant Life in December, killing Teacher Erin West, 42, and freshman Rubi Vergara, 14. That morning, she arrived at the school carrying a .22-caliber Sig Sauer and a Glock handgun, both of which had been purchased by Jeffrey Rupnow and stored in a gun safe at his home. In an interview with authorities cited in the criminal complaint, Jeffrey Rupnow said the day before the shooting, he had retrieved his daughter's handgun from his gun safe for cleaning. He was uncertain whether she returned it to the safe. That gun and another handgun were used in the shooting. Her father told police she must have retrieved the second gun from the safe. Documents found in Natalie Rupnow's room after her death include statements describing humanity as "filth" and saying she lived in a "population of scum." She used a racial slur before saying, "Some of you guys deserve to be dead." She believed, according to the court record, that humanity had forced her into a hole. She also appeared to idolize mass shooters, according to the complaint. She also wrote she was able to obtain the firearms she would use in the Abundant Life shooting as a result of "lies and manipulation, and my father's stupidity," according to the complaint. Other notebooks showed maps of the school, how to best damage a body with a bullet and apparent timelines for when she would begin her attack, according to the complaint. Authorities also found a cardboard model that resembled the school in her room. Rupnow is scheduled to appear in court later this month for a bail hearing, and a pre-trial conference is scheduled for late September. No hearings have yet been scheduled on the motion to dismiss. Gary man charged in West Side gun incident

A 21-year-old Gary man is facing a felony charge after he allegedly brought a 40-mm Glock handgun to the West Side Leadership Academy on Tuesday afternoon because he wanted to 'defend' a family member. De'Andre Hicks was charged Wednesday in Lake Superior Court with possession of a firearm on school property, a Level 6 felony. Around 3:30 p.m., a school security officer saw Hicks arguing with a student as school was being dismissed and the officer said she saw a gun in Hicks' pocket as he threatened to harm the student, according to the probable cause affidavit. The officer told the two males to stop arguing and called for assistance. Authorities said Hicks fled to his car, a tan sedan, where school security detained him and he was placed in a school security vehicle. Gary police found the firearm on the floorboard of Hicks' vehicle and took custody of Hicks from Cliff Caldwell, Gary Community School Corporation's director of security. En route to jail, Hicks acknowledged what he did was 'wrong' and 'stupid.' He said a family member had a previous altercation with a male student at West Side. Hicks is being held in Lake County Jail with bail set at $15,000.

US postal worker stole cards and checks from mail to fund lavish lifestyle, tropical vacations she flaunted online

A California postal worker allegedly stole credit, debit cards and checks to fuel a lavish lifestyle that included luxurious tropical vacations and Rolex watches she flaunted on social media Mary Ann Magdamit, 31, a former letter carrier at the Torrance Main Post Office, admitted Monday to stealing mail containing checks, personal identifying information, and debit and credit cards from her job between 2022 and July 2025, according to the US Attorney's Office. She would then activate the cards online and use them to make costly purchases. 4 Mary Ann Magdamit admitted on Monday to stealing mail containing checks, personal identifying information, and debit and credit cards while working for the US Postal Service. U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California The alleged mail thief also allegedly sold some of the cards to co-conspirators, who also helped her cash the stolen checks and create 'counterfeit identity documents in the name of the check's payee.' Magdamit proudly flaunted stacks of hundred-dollar bills she gained through stealing from unsuspecting citizens and the luxurious goods, including a Rolex watch, on Instagram. In one photo, Magdamit — wearing a Yankees hat — took a selfie as she held a stack of the bills against her ear, resembling a cell phone. She also photographed the money lying on her lap as she sat in her driver's seat. Prosecutors said Magdamit used stolen cards on international trips to Turks and Caicos and Aruba. A photo posted to the former postal workers' Instagram shows her lounging by a pool with a glass of champagne while on one of her luxurious vacations. 4 Magdamit proudly flaunted stacks of hundred-dollar bills she gained through stealing from unsuspecting citizens and the luxurious goods, including a Rolex watch, on Instagram. U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California In December 2024, law enforcement seized 133 stolen credit and debit cards and 16 US Department of the Treasury checks from her apartment. Police also found an unserialized Glock clone pistol, known as a 'ghost gun,' which had an extended 27-round magazine. Despite the raid, the former postal worker remained free until July, when federal agents discovered she was still making purchases with victims' stolen cards, according to the Justice Department. 4 A photo posted to the former postal workers' Instagram shows her lounging by a pool with a glass of champagne while on vacation. U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California Magdamit was arrested on July 1. Agents searched her apartment again and discovered more stolen credit cards. She faces one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, where she faces up to 30 years in federal prison. It's unclear if any of her co-conspirators have been arrested or charged. 4 In December 2024, law enforcement seized 133 stolen credit and debit cards and 16 US Department of the Treasury checks from her apartment. U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California The Post has reached out to the US Attorney's Office for the Central District of California for comment. In March, a former US Postal Service worker in Washington, DC, Hachikosela Muchimba, was convicted of stealing around $1.6 million in checks to fund a 'lavish lifestyle that included international travel, stays at luxury hotels, and purchases at gentlemen's clubs.' At the time of his arrest in September 2023, Muchimba was trying to flee to Zambia. Muchimba, who immigrated to the US from Zambia, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit theft of mail and bank fraud, theft of mail, bank fraud, engaging in a monetary transaction in property derived from specified unlawful activity, and unlawful procurement of citizenship or naturalization. He is also facing a penalty of 30 years for the bank fraud charge and five years for the mail theft charge.
