Kurdish PKK says will disband and end armed struggle
"The 12th PKK Congress has decided to dissolve the PKK's organisational structure and end its method of armed struggle," the group announced in a statement after holding its congress last week.
The PKK's announcement to dissolve itself heeds a call by its founder Abdullah Ocalan, jailed in an island off Istanbul since 1999, who urged his fighters in February to disarm and disband.
In a letter, Ocalan urged the PKK to hold a congress to formalise the decision.
Days later, the PKK's leadership accepted Ocalan's call, declaring a ceasefire.
In a speech on Saturday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hinted that news about a dissolution could come at any moment, adding that his government was determined to "save our country from the scourge of terrorism".
"We are advancing with firm steps on the path to the goal of a terror-free Turkey," he said.
The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has waged an insurgency since 1984.
Its original aim was to carve out a homeland for Kurds, who make up about 20 percent of Turkey's 85 million people.
Since Ocalan was jailed there have been various attempts to end the bloodshed, which has cost more than 40,000 lives.

Iranian authorities confirmed the seizure of the foreign tanker after detecting irregularities in its cargo documentation, with security forces arresting 17 crew members, including the ship's captain, during the operation. The vessel was suspected of transporting two million liters of smuggled fuel through the Sea of Oman. Fuel smuggling via 'dark fleet' tankers has been a consistent tactic used by Iran to circumvent Western sanctions, with much of the crude oil ultimately making its way to China. Israel Conducts Massive Strikes On Damascus After Sharaa Regime's Sectarian Attacks
'The heavy blows have started' Israel's defense minister Israel Katz has posted to X above a video (below) showing a Syrian news presenter abruptly taking shelter after a massive explosion in central Damascus. The rare daytime aerial attack by Israel in the heart of Damascus created panic in the streets, and quickly after huge columns of smoke lingered over the downtown area. There are casualties, with state news agency SANA quoting the Health Ministry as saying that at least three were killed and nine people wounded in the Israeli attacks. Eyewitnesses say they saw Israeli warplanes circling above the capital city, and that there were at least three to four strikes. Syria has no air defense systems to speak of, after Bashar al-Assad's December 8 ouster and subsequent heavy Israeli bombings of all remaining Syrian military equipment. The large-scale attack, which could see more to follow, has been roundly condemned by Syria's regional partners who are trying to prop up the new Hayat Tahrir al-Sham government under self-declared interim President Sharaa (Jolani). The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli attacks as an attempt to 'sabotage Syria's efforts to ensure peace.' The Syrian people have a 'historic opportunity to live in peace and integrate with the world,' the statement continued. Syria Signs $800M Tartous Port Deal With Dubai-Based Company
Syria has signed an $800-million agreement with Dubai-based DP World to redevelop the Tartous Port, state media reported on Sunday. The deal was signed in Damascus in the presence of self-appointed Syrian interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa. The agreement grants DP World a 30-year term to operate and upgrade Tartous, one of Syria's most strategic coastal hubs. Syrian officials say the deal is part of a wider push to modernize the country's logistics infrastructure. 'This strategic move will bolster our port operations and logistics services,' an unnamed Syrian official told SANA. Qutaiba Badawi, chairman of the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, called the deal 'a new phase of field and maritime work in Syria.' DP World chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said the agreement would position Tartous as a global transport node. 'Syria possesses valuable assets,' he said, adding, 'The port of Tartous will be one of the best in the world, particularly in transport and cargo handling services.' According to Badawi, the contract was the result of months of negotiations and was structured to be 'tight, fair and transparent.' The agreement includes infrastructure and technological upgrades to expand Tartous's cargo capacity and support the recovery of Syria's industrial and commercial sectors. The Tartous contract follows a series of high-value agreements signed in recent months, including a 30-year deal with France's CMA CGM to operate Latakia Port and a $7-billion energy contract with Qatari, Turkish, and US firms to restore the power grid. The US lifted most of its sanctions on Syria last month, citing what it called 'positive actions' by Sharaa's administration. US President Donald Trump has revoked the Foreign Terrorist Organization designation for the Nusra Front, later known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), according to a State Department memo filed on 7 July. In December 2024, HTS – under the leadership of Ahmad al-Sharaa (who went by the name Abu Mohammad al-Julani when he was still an ISIS chief) – successfully ousted former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and took power in Damascus. On June 7, Syria was reinstated to the SWIFT banking system, as Damascus began implementing financial reforms under Central Bank Governor Abdul Qader al-Husriya. The Tartous Port deal comes seven months after HTS declared the ousting of the Assad government following its capture of Damascus and the flight of former president Bashar al-Assad.
