Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has restrained Kishore Chhabria-led Allied Blenders & Distillers (ABD) from launching 'Mansion House' and 'Savoy Club' spirits anywhere in the country, setting aside a recent single bench order that allowed it to sell these brands in West Bengal. Tilaknagar Industries (TI), which markets and sells brandy and whisky under the Mansion House brand, had sought the court's intervention to restrain ABD, Herman Jansen Beverages Nederland BV, and UTO Asia Pte Ltd from manufacturing, marketing, or selling alcoholic products under the trademarks Mansion House and Savoy Club."The balance of convenience is clearly against UTO and in favour of Tilaknagar," a division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne said in its order issued on Wednesday. "In order to avoid confusion in the minds of the customers, which is also in the public interest, the two rival entities cannot be allowed to manufacture and sell products under the same marks, particularly when UTO has not sold a single bottle of alcohol in India under the impugned marks for 38 long years," it said in its 83-page order.ABD in a stock exchange filing on Thursday said, "The company is considering to challenge the order."The dispute has been going on for over 17 years now.Singapore-based UTO-which ABD acquired from Herman Jansen last month for ₹1.22 million, or about ₹12 crore-owns worldwide rights in Mansion House and Savoy Club brands, excluding certain territories such as China and most of Southeast Asia.Tilaknagar had in 1987 signed an agreement with UTO (Herman Jansen) for the ownership rights of Mansion House brandy and Savoy Club gin in India. The Dutch side, however, argued that the arrangement was never legally solemnised and filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against TI in 2008, when Mansion House brandy emerged as a formidable brand in India. In December 2011, the Bombay HC held that Tilaknagar had the ownership rights to Mansion House in India, but Herman Jansen filed an appeal against it before a division bench. In 2014, ABD bought 50% ownership rights for Mansion House and Savoy Club brands from Herman Jansen and signed a licensing deal to produce and sell them in the country.Tilaknagar challenged this.In February this year, Bombay High Court's Justice Riyaz Chagla allowed ABD and Herman Jansen to launch Mansion House brandy and Savoy Club gin in West Bengal, observing that "there is no apparent similarity between the ABD's label and Tilaknagar's mark" and that ABD has been able to establish that its products will compete in a different market segment of high-end alcoholic beverages Tilaknagar challenged the order before a division bench, which has now set it aside. When contacted, Tilaknagar's legal head Savitrii Dadhich confirmed the development but refused to divulge any details. The firm, through senior counsels Ravi Kadam and Venkatesh Dhond, had argued that it has marketed and sold alcoholic beverages under Mansion House and Savoy Club trademarks in India for over 40 years.

German 30-year government bond yields hit highest since 2011

German 30-year yields reach highest since 2011 Driven by investor focus on likely rise in fiscal spending Ukraine peace deal could also lead to increase in bond supply Aug 12 (Reuters) - German 30-year yields rose to their highest level since 2011 on Tuesday, driven by renewed investor focus on expectations of a sharp increase in fiscal spending, while U.S. economic data released earlier came in roughly in line with forecasts. Germany is about to increase its fiscal spending massively to revive economic growth and scale up military investments. "I don't see a specific driver today, but the move in long-dated German yields isn't surprising given the low volumes and the broader economic backdrop," said Michiel Tukker, rate strategist at ING, citing the Dutch pension reform and expectations of increased issuance from Germany. Germany's 30-year government bond yield was up 7 basis points (bps) at 3.30%, after hitting 3.31%, its highest level since 2011. The Dutch pension system is depriving the euro zone's $10 trillion government bond market of a key buyer of its long-term debt, just as state funding needs a boost. A peace deal in Ukraine could also lead to a further increase in bond supply, as Europe remains committed to supporting the country's reconstruction. Russian forces have made a sudden thrust into eastern Ukraine, a move that may be designed to increase the pressure on Kyiv to give up land as the U.S. and Russian presidents prepare to meet. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that an unjust peace would not last long. U.S. long-dated bonds also underperformed with 30-year yields up 4.5 bps to 4.88%. Euro zone borrowing costs had held steady for most of the session after the United States and China rolled over a trade truce for 90 more days, as expected. Policy-sensitive German two-year yields were last up 0.5 bps at 1.97%, while German 10-year yields rose 5 bps to 2.74%. Two-year U.S. Treasury yields fell after data showed that U.S. consumer price inflation was roughly in line with the expectations of economists in July, likely clearing the way for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in September. U.S. consumer prices increased moderately in July, though underlying inflation posted its largest gain in six months. "Goods that rely heavily on imports are facing pronounced upward price pressure," said Katy Stoves, investment manager at Mattioli Woods. "However, inflation from services, not subject to tariffs and by far the bigger contributor to the U.S. economy, may help prevent overall U.S. inflation increases," she added. Italy's 10-year government bond yields rose 5 bps to 3.56%, leaving the yield gap with safe-haven Bunds at 81 bps, its lowest level in over 15 years.

Aravind Srinivas' Perplexity, itself valued at $18 billion, makes a $34.5 billion all-cash offer to buy Google Chrome

Image credits: Getty Images Aravind Srinivas-led AI company Perplexity has submitted an unsolicited $34.5 billion all-cash offer to acquire Google 's Chrome browser. The three-year-old startup confirmed it sent the formal bid to Google, despite being valued at just $18 billion itself. The bold move comes as Chrome commands over three billion users worldwide, making it a prize asset in the heated race for AI-powered search dominance. "Multiple large investment funds have agreed to finance the transaction in full," said Perplexity Chief Business Officer Dmitry Shevelenko. The company has raised around $1 billion so far from major investors including Nvidia and Japan's SoftBank, but declined to name which funds would back this massive acquisition. What Perplexity's Chrome deal includes Perplexity's offer goes beyond just the $34.5 billion price tag. The company has outlined specific commitments designed to address potential regulatory and user concerns about the acquisition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The startup pledges to invest $3 billion over two years in Chrome development and infrastructure improvements. It promises to keep the underlying Chromium code open source, ensuring other browser makers can continue building on the platform. Crucially, Perplexity says it won't change Chrome's default search engine settings. "This is part of our commitment to continuity and choice for users, and will likely be seen as having the benefit of stability for Google and its many advertisers," a Perplexity spokesperson said. The all-cash offer includes no equity component, which Perplexity says avoids potential antitrust complications. According to the term sheet, the company would also "extend offers to a substantial portion of Chrome talent" to retain key developers and engineers. Google's antitrust case creates rare opportunity for Perplexity The timing is no accident. A federal judge ruled last year that Google holds an illegal monopoly in internet search, and now the Department of Justice wants the tech giant to sell Chrome as the primary remedy. US District Judge Amit Mehta is expected to rule on final penalties any day now, potentially forcing Google into the largest corporate breakup in decades. "To remedy these harms, the [Initial Proposed Final Judgment] requires Google to divest Chrome, which will permanently stop Google's control of this critical search access point and allow rival search engines the ability to access the browser," the DOJ wrote in court filings. The stakes couldn't be higher. Chrome commands over three billion users worldwide - more than a third of all internet users - making it the ultimate prize in the AI search wars. The browser feeds Google's $300 billion advertising empire by tracking user behavior, search patterns, and website visits across the entire web. The stakes couldn't be higher. Chrome commands over three billion users worldwide - more than a third of all internet users - making it the ultimate prize in the AI search wars. The browser feeds Google's $300 billion advertising empire by tracking user behavior, search patterns, and website visits across the entire web. Without Chrome, Google would lose its most valuable window into user behavior and face a much tougher battle to maintain its 90% dominance in global search. For Perplexity and other AI search challengers like OpenAI (which once had shown interest in an similar purchase), acquiring Chrome would provide instant access to billions of users who currently default to Google search. It would also break Google's stranglehold on the browser market, where Chrome holds roughly 65% market share globally. The browser integration has been crucial to Google's ability to promote its AI features like Search Overviews and fend off competition from chatbots like ChatGPT and Perplexity's own AI search engine. But significant challenges remain for Srinivas & co. Google has shown no interest in selling Chrome and plans to appeal the antitrust ruling through potentially years of legal battles. The $34.5 billion bid also falls short of the at least $50 billion valuation that DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg has suggested Chrome could command in a forced sale scenario. This marks Perplexity's second major acquisition attempt this year, following its January offer to merge with TikTok's US operations. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now

PixxelSpace India-led consortium to establish India's first commercial earth observation satellite constellation

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) on Tuesday announced the selection of the PixxelSpace India-led consortium to design, build, and operate India's first fully indigenous commercial earth observation (EO) satellite constellation under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The Bengaluru-based PixxelSpace India consortium comprises Piersight Space, Satsure Analytics India, and Dhruva Space. IN-SPACe said the selection of the PixxelSpace India consortium was done following a competitive bidding process which involved two more consortia. It is for the first time in the history of the Indian space sector that a private consortium would invest more than ₹1,200 crore over the next five years to launch a constellation of 12 state-of-the-art EO satellites equipped with panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, and microwave Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors. The constellation will deliver Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and Value-Added Services (VAS) for applications in climate change monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, infrastructure, marine surveillance, national security, and urban planning, while also catering to the global demand for high-quality geospatial intelligence. IN-SPACe said that by generating high-resolution, indigenous satellite data, the initiative will significantly reduce India's reliance on foreign sources, ensure data sovereignty, and position the country among the global leaders in space-based data solutions. 'This initiative signals the coming of age of India's private space industry in the space sector. It demonstrates the capability and confidence of Indian companies to lead large-scale, technologically advanced, and commercially viable space missions that serve both national and global markets. The EO -PPP model fosters an ecosystem where public and private capabilities reinforce each other to drive growth, innovation, and self-reliance,' Pawan Goenka, chairman, IN-SPACe, said. Under the PPP framework, the Union government will provide strategic, technical, and policy support, while the PixxelSpace India-led consortium will own and operate the EO system, including satellite manufacturing, launches from Indian soil, ground infrastructure, and commercialisation of data services. IN-SPACe further added that the EO constellation will be deployed in a phased manner over the next four years to ensure continuous service upgrades and expanded coverage. Once operational, it will be among the most advanced EO systems in the world, designed, built, and operated entirely in India by Indian talent.
