Poor condition of Thiruneermalai Road, coupled with heavy traffic congestion, cause inconveniences to the motorists
The Thiruneermalai Main Road is a major road linking several residential localities of Tambaram Corporation and the industrial units located in Pammal and Thirumudivakkam. The road branching off from the arterial GST Road is congested with heavy traffic during morning and evening rush hours with vehicles lined up on the road for several meters at the Thiruneermalai Road-GST Road junction. Moreover the presence of several leather units on the road leads to heavy vehicles movement on the stretch daily.
While the traffic police of the Tambaram Police Commissionerate has taken steps of regulating traffic by putting in temporary medians to prevent lane jumping, and cutting off the right turn for vehicles coming from Thiruneermalai Road towards GST Road, it still has not helped much and motorists continue to battle traffic congestion at the junction.
Adding to the woes of the motorists is the poor condition of the road caused by the digging up of the road for underground drainage (UGD) project being executed in Pammal and Anakaputhur by the Tambaram corporation.
B. Saravanan, a resident of Lakshmi Nagar in Thiruneermalai, said the road is choked with heavy traffic during evening hours when heavy vehicles and buses transporting employees from the industrial units of Thirumudivakkam and Pammal line up at a stetch completely clogging both sides of the road, making it impossible for commuters to move ahead.
The road is also the link road to several stone quarries in Kundrathur and home to a few temples attracting hundreds of devotees during weekends. S. Aravamudhan, a devotee who visits the Vaishnavite temple in Thiruneermalai, wanted the State Highways department to widen the road to ease the traffic congestion.
A senior official of the Tambaram Corporation said the UGD work was in the final stages of completion and once it is completed the road would be paved by the State Highways department.
Sources in the Highways Department said that the Tambaram corporation had taken up UGD work on the Thiruneermalai Road and of the 3 km length, they had completed around 1.5 km. 'Even as the work is progressing, they keep adding cuts in various places to add netwroks for houses and buildings. They have already deposited the amount meant for restoration of the road cuts. We will take up rectification as soon as they provide us with the completion certificate,' said an official.

Encroachments on the footpath along GST Road inconveniences pedestrians
The GST Road at Chromepet has become congested after textile and gold showrooms opened. Restaurants have mushroomed along the road to cater to shoppers. The pavement has been occupied by food- carts and the display boards of the shops. At some places, the pavement has been turned into a dining place. At night, the vessels of the eateries are washed on the pavement. Adding to the woes of pedestrians is the restaurants using the road margin for car parking. The residents filed police complaints, but not even copies of the complaints filed in the Community Service Register (CSR) are being issued. Traffic snarls: Signals at Pal Company Junction to be removed
COIMBATORE: In a move aimed at improving traffic flow and addressing long-standing complaints from motorists, the road safety wing of the State Highways Department along with the traffic police wing is set to remove the traffic signals at the Pal Company Junction on the Thadagam-Anaikatti Road in Coimbatore. The decision comes after consistent public demand and detailed evaluation by the District Road Safety Committee. The Pal Company junction is the only signalised intersection on this busy stretch, and its removal is expected to significantly reduce traffic snarls, particularly during peak hours. According to sources, the traffic lights were introduced at the junction in the post-COVID period in an effort to streamline vehicle movement. However, contrary to expectations, the signals often led to bottlenecks, frustrating commuters and slowing down traffic flow. Speaking to TNIE, G Manuneethi, Divisional Engineer of the State Highways Department (Road Safety) in Coimbatore Division, said, "Many motorists had been urging us to re-evaluate the use of traffic signals at the Pal Company Junction. After a thorough study, we found that signalisation here was actually hampering smooth traffic movement rather than helping it." He also revealed that in response to public feedback and traffic assessments, the committee led by the district collector has approved the removal of the signals and the introduction of U-turn provisions along the stretch over a month ago. This measure is intended to allow vehicles to flow more freely while still maintaining road safety. Work on implementing the changes is expected to begin soon. Once completed, officials hope that traffic movement on the Thadagam-Anaikatti Road will become smoother and more efficient. Sources said that although the removal of the traffic signals and trial run of u-turns received approval more than a month ago, they are yet to be implemented as the traffic police wing is yet to begin the works and provide manpower. Meanwhile, officials are confident of starting the works of removing traffic signals and centre medians along with the streetlight poles on the stretch.
