Richard Carapaz will not race at this year's Tour de France due to a gastrointestinal infection, the Ecuadorian has confirmed.
Carapaz, who was crowned the Tour's king of the mountains and won the overall combativity award in 2024, will not compete after symptoms of abdominal pain and a high fever while training for the race in Ecuador.

He underwent several rounds of medical tests that revealed the infection, which was confirmed by additional scans and imaging, and is currently receiving antibiotics and medication.
It comes less than a month after the 32-year-old record a podium finish at the Giro d'Italia.
Carapaz announced on his Instagram account that with 'great sadness' he would be missing the Tour, which starts on July 5.
A post shared by Richard Carapaz (@richardcarapaz)
'Not the best news, but health always comes first,' he said. 'Thank you all for your messages and support.'
Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Carapaz's team EF Education-EasyPost, said he was 'gutted' for the Ecuadorian in a statement.
'He came out of the Giro with amazing form and was setting career-high power numbers in training,' Vaughters said. 'He sacrificed a lot to get to that level, so the timing really couldn't be worse.
'We know how much the Tour means to him, so to lose him this close to the race is a real blow. He's a champion in every sense, and knowing him, I have no doubt this setback will only motivate him to come back stronger.'
Carapaz has recorded six podium finishes across cycling's three Grand Tours; he won the Giro in 2019, finished second in 2022 and also recorded a second-place finish at the Vuelta de Espana in 2020. His best finish in the Tour de France was third in 2021.
In July 2021, he won the gold medal in the road race at the 2020 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Ecuadorian cyclist to win a medal and only the second Ecuadorian in any sport to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Carapaz is now targeting a return in the Vuelta, which starts in Spain on August 23 and will last for three weeks.
'His goal? Win the Vuelta,' said his team.

💥 Tension mounts at Boca as Russo drops three players

Marcos Rojo, Marcelo Saracchi, and Cristian Lema have been removed from the professional squad by the decision of Xeneize's coach. There is a very tense atmosphere at Boca Juniors. Amid a tough losing streak and some off-field scandals, there are some players who will no longer be part of the professional squad: Cristian Lema, Marcos Rojo, and Marcelo Saracchi have been ousted. Miguel Ángel Russo decided in the last few hours to permanently separate these three footballers from the locker room for various acts of indiscipline, a measure that has shaken Boca Predio. Upon arriving at the club's sports complex, Lema, Rojo, and Saracchi found out that they had to change away from the rest of their teammates. Chiquito Romero, who is also not in Russo's plans, will remain part of the group for the time being. As reported by Federico Cristofanelli in Infobae, each of the removed players has a particular situation. Cristian Lema had missed two training sessions without prior notice. Marcos Rojo, on the other hand, had a disagreement with Russo in the United States that drastically changed his situation. And Marcelo Saracchi caused displeasure with his insistence on leaving the club. Boca Juniors is currently immersed in the worst negative record of matches without victories (11) in its history. Juan Román Riquelme's management is in jeopardy and drastic measures have begun to be taken to stay afloat. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Tour de France Femmes: Kim Le Court becomes first African to win a stage

Kim Le Court became the first African to win a stage of the Tour de France Femmes as the Mauritian won the fifth stage to put herself in the leader's yellow jersey. Team Visma Lease-A-Bike's Marianne Vos started the day in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou (Futuroscope) leading the overall classification but crossed the finish line 165.8km later, in Gueret, 33 seconds behind the first group. The day of racing finished with no movement in the green jersey (points) and the polka-dot jersey (mountains) with Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) and Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez) holding onto them respectively. 🇲🇺 @KimLeCourt takes it on the line !!! 🇲🇺 @KimLeCourt l'emporte sur la ligne !!!#TDFF2025 | #WatchTheFemmes | @gozwift — Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift (@LeTourFemmes) July 30, 2025 'We came in with a clear plan, first to stay safe, it was difficult because it was flat and fast, a lot of big crashes, then the big goal was to take the bonus sprint, which I managed to do, then try for the victory,' Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal) said after her win. 'It was difficult in the finish, I went around the corner in front and it was a bit further than I expected, but my kick was the best in the group. The 29-year-old's team-mate Sarah Gigante was in the leading group that included Demi Vollering (FDJ Suez) and Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Team Visma Lease-A-Bike), helping set the pace to ensure Le Court was set up for the win. After two days of dominance from Wiebes, the peloton distanced her and team-mate Lotte Kopecky with just over 20km to go as they chased down the breakaway group. United States champion Kristen Faulkner was one of eight riders to abandon the race on Wednesday, as she was involved in another early crash and her team EF Education-Oatly announced on their X page that she had battled fatigue. The other riders to drop out were Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek), Maria Giulia Confalonieri (Uno-X Mobility), Katrine Aalerud (UnoX-Mobility), Monica Trinca Colonel (Liv-AlUla-Jayco), Eugenia Bujak (Cofidis), Agnieszka Skalniak-Sojka (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto) and Eleonora Gasparrini (UAE Team ADQ). Luis Diaz 'IRRITATED' with Liverpool after completing Bayern Munich deal

Luis Diaz's Liverpool adventure is at an end. After three-and-a-half years, the Colombian winger is moving to Bayern Munich for around £65m. The 28-year-old swept up all the major domestic prizes during his time in Anfield red - including the Premier League title in 2024/25. Diaz scored 13 league goals - featuring on the left wing as well as up front. However, the South American wide man's time on Merseyside ends on a slightly sour note. Diaz hit with splash of reality Diaz was seeking a new Liverpool contract before his Bayern transfer was sealed. Under contract until 2027, and earning around £55k per week, Diaz was clearly entitled to feel his efforts in the Premier League last season were enough to warrant a new deal. Futbolred in Colombia has now disclosed that certain events left Diaz 'irritated' - leading to him paving the way for a move away. Firstly, the publication says that new contracts for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk - combined with a £260m summer spending spree - were a 'cold splash of reality' for Diaz. Other contracts prioritised Salah and Van Dijk's deals were running out in summer 2025 - and Richard Hughes saw fit to furnish the pair with two-year extensions. Both will command around £400k per week until 2027 - putting Diaz's renewal demands in the shade. And then came the signings of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili. With Liverpool moving on from their renewals for Van Dijk and Salah, new players were deemed the next priority over Diaz's new deal. © IMAGO Liverpool DENIED Diaz deal But then 'to make matters worse' according to the report, Liverpool began to reject offers for Diaz from Barcelona and Bayern. These rejections 'irritated' Diaz, the publication states, as both teams would have granted him a far richer contract than the one he was on at Anfield. 'They were denying him something they clearly weren't willing to offer,' it reads. But Hughes has nonetheless stuck to his guns and brought in great money for Diaz. That £65m will come in very useful in the chase for Alexander Isak while Diaz has got what he wanted too. He will be making three times more money for Bayern than he was at Liverpool.
