The eruption occurred at 2.10 pm local time, sending a column of ash up to 4 kilometres (km) into the sky. Thick gray clouds drifted westward and northwestward from the crater.
To mitigate aviation risks, authorities issued a Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) at the orange level, the second-highest alert, advising aircraft to avoid flying below 5,000 metres in the vicinity of the volcano. Pilots are also urged to be cautious of airborne volcanic ash, which poses a serious hazard to flight safety.
Local residents, tourists, and visitors are prohibited from conducting any activities within a 6-km radius of the crater, and within a 7-km radius in the southwest and northeast sectors.

Among its highlights is the introduction of Midnight Supper, a late-night dining culture that is part of the Malaysian lifestyle, besides participating hotels featuring ethnic-themed food presentations and decorations. Five entities are taking part in the programme -- restaurants under the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Operators Association (PRESMA), Saloma Kuala Lumpur, Hotel Royal Signature, Hotel Saujana, and Ibis Kuala Lumpur. According to Lee, gastronomy is among the key factors tourists consider when choosing their travel destination. 'When someone travels, food is a primary element they seek. Through the Midnight Supper programme, which highlights Malaysia's late-night dining culture, we are able to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of our local cuisine to visitors.

Typhoon Nari makes landfall over Japan's Hokkaido
TOKYO: Typhoon Nari crossed the Hokkaido coast on Tuesday (July 15), the first landfall by a typhoon on Japan's northern main island since 2016, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Xinhua reported. The fifth typhoon of the year made landfall near Cape Erimo at the southern tip of Hokkaido at around 2am local time, also marking the first to make landfall in Hokkaido during July since records began in 1951, the weather agency said. The system, which formed over the weekend around 200km south of Chichijima Island in the Pacific, moved along the eastern side of the Japanese archipelago before approaching Hokkaido, and turned into an extratropical cyclone at 9am local time. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said the sharing and engagement session demonstrated mosques' readiness to enhance their facilities, services and approach in welcoming visitors from across the country, regardless of religion or race. 'Mosque tourism should be viewed as a bridge that connects visitors to Islamic values, heritage and moderation, while also fostering dialogue between cultures and religions. 'With the commitment of local authorities and the concerted efforts of all parties, I am confident that Malaysia can emerge as a global leader in the tourism sector,' he told Bernama. Khairul Firdaus said that in the context of Malaysia's position as a global leader in Islamic tourism, the ministry's long-term vision was to make mosques among the key tourism products that showcased the wealth of Islamic heritage, architecture and universal values. 'We have mosques with impressive architecture and a wealth of historical significance, ranging from centuries-old structures to modern designs that reflect the country's progress.
