Promoted to Field Marshal after military failures, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir is now facing global mockery with a Times Square billboard by his own people
A video showing a digital billboard in New York's Times Square went viral on social media this week, as many users shared footage of a truck-mounted screen publicly targeting Pakistan's military and political leadership. The video was widely shared on X, including by journalist Aditya Raj Kaul, whose post triggered strong reactions online. The billboard labelled Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir as a 'Fraud Marshal" and a 'Liar", while also calling former President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif his 'two crooks."
The display is being widely seen as a public embarrassment for Munir on the global stage, driven by sections of the Pakistani diaspora frustrated over recent military and political developments back home.

The Messages On Display
The rotating digital display, mounted on a truck, featured multiple pointed messages:
'THE DECEIVER & HIS TWO CROOKS" — with images of Munir, Zardari and Sharif.
'ILLEGALLY DETAINED FOR 2 YEARS" — showing Imran Khan behind bars.
'FRAUD MARSHAL", 'LIAR WHY DON'T YOU TAKE A POLL", and 'WILL DO ANYTHING FOR SELF-INTEREST" — directly attacking Munir.
'GOOD WORK MAKES YOU STAND TALL, NOT FAKE TITLES" — contrasting merit with Munir's ceremonial promotion.
'REAL HERO STANDING WITH IMRAN KHAN" — projecting Imran Khan as the true leader.
The backdrop to this diaspora anger is the escalation between India and Pakistan in May 2025, following the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir that left 26 people dead. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor — a military operation conducted in the early hours of 6-7 May. The strikes targeted terror camps linked to groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahideen, and The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar proxy, across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Over 100 terrorists, including top commanders like JeM leader Abdul Rauf Azhar and family members of Masood Azhar, were killed. The conflict lasted till May 10 afternoon when the Pakistan side requested a ceasefire in view of the heavy losses suffered by it in the attacks by the Indian Air Force.
Munir's Controversial Promotion Fuels Criticism
Amidst this backdrop, General Munir's promotion to Field Marshal — a five-star rank last held in Pakistan in 1959 — sparked widespread criticism, with detractors accusing the army chief of being rewarded despite the military setbacks. On social media, Munir has been widely mocked as a 'Failed Marshal."
Imran Khan: The Flashpoint
Imran Khan's continued imprisonment remains one of the most explosive flashpoints in Pakistan's ongoing political crisis. The former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief was arrested in May 2023 on a series of charges ranging from corruption and illegal possession of state gifts to alleged leaking of state secrets. Khan and his supporters have consistently dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and part of a sustained crackdown orchestrated by the military establishment, led by Army Chief General Asim Munir.
The rivalry between Khan and Munir predates his arrest, with reports indicating longstanding tensions since Munir's brief tenure as ISI chief during Khan's premiership. After Munir's appointment as Army Chief in late 2022, relations between PTI and the military sharply deteriorated, culminating in Khan's ouster and subsequent legal troubles. Multiple prison sentences and disqualifications have effectively sidelined Khan from electoral politics, while his party has faced widespread repression, with key leaders arrested, defected or forced underground.
Despite the ongoing crackdown, Imran Khan continues to command substantial public support both domestically and among the overseas Pakistani community. For sections of the diaspora, his detention has become a symbol of the military's political overreach. The Times Square billboard campaign reflects how these grievances are being amplified internationally, with Khan projected as a 'real hero" standing against what his supporters describe as a corrupt military-political nexus now symbolised by Munir, Zardari, and Sharif.

Addressing a public gathering in J-K's Reasi, PM Modi said, 'Remember, exactly one month ago, on the night of May 6, Pakistan saw its doomsday. Now, whenever Pakistan hears the name of Operation Sindoor, it will remember its shameful defeat. The Pakistani Army and terrorists had never thought that India would attack terrorists hundreds of kilometres inside Pakistan in such a way…' He said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of Aatmnirbhar Bharat and praised the armed forces for their trust in 'Make in India.' 'You have seen how Operation Sindoor has shown the power of Aatmnirbhar Bharat. Today, the world is discussing India's defence ecosystem. There is only one reason behind this. Our army's trust in Make in India. Every Indian has to repeat what the army has done…' he said. He also urged the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to actively participate in Mission Manufacturing, announced in this year's budget. 'I want to ask the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to join this mission… Your ideas and skills will take India's economy and security to new heights,' he said. The Prime Minister also announced financial assistance for families affected by border shelling. He said houses fully damaged by cross-border shelling would receive Rs 2 lakh, while partially damaged houses would be given Rs 1 lakh. 'The suffering of more than 2000 families affected by shelling is also our own suffering… Now, those houses which have suffered heavy damage will be given Rs 2 lakh, and those partially damaged will receive Rs 1 lakh more,' he said. He also highlighted security and infrastructure in the border areas, saying that two border battalions have been formed for the Jammu and Kashmir division, the work for forming two women battalions has also been completed, and more than Rs 4,2000 crore is being spent to improve infrastructure along the international border. 'New infrastructure worth hundreds of crores is being developed in the conflict-prone areas near our international border,' the PM said. PM Modi also made a strong pitch for promoting indigenous products as an act of patriotism. 'We have to take another resolution: we have to prioritise goods made in India, created by the sweat of our countrymen. This is patriotism. This is service to the nation. We have to increase the honour of our Army on the border and increase the pride of Make in India in the marketplace,' he added. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated several key infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. These included the Chenab Railway Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, and the Anji Bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. TMC holds protest rally in Kolkata over BJP leaders' 'derogatory' remarks on West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee
The remarks by BJP leaders, according to the TMC, came in response to Mamata Banerjee's sharp rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent speech in Alipurduar, where he had referred to Operation Sindoor, while targeting the TMC government. Operation Sindoor was India's retaliatory strike on terror camps in Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP, however, countered the TMC's charges, pointing to a recent purported audio clip in which senior TMC leader Anubrata Mondal is allegedly heard using abusive language during a phone conversation with a police officer. PTI couldn't independently verify the authenticity of the audio clip. "Who is TMC protesting against BJP leaders? Are they protesting against their very own Anubrata Mondal?" BJP MP Locket Chatterjee asked. "Let them first clean their own house," she said. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul also took a dig at the TMC's women leaders, saying, "Before joining the protest rally, they should apologise to the wife and mother of inspector Liton Halder for the way Anubrata Mondal spoke to him." Reacting to the controversy, Kolkata Mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim said, "What Anubrata did is wrong. We will never support that. He has publicly apologised and appeared before the police." The TMC has maintained that Mondal's comments were not endorsed by the party and that he had already faced public and legal scrutiny for his actions.
