The Red Sox called up their top prospect and swept the Yankees. Then they made a stunning trade
The week began with Boston calling up top prospect Roman Anthony. It ended with the Red Sox trading slugger Rafael Devers. In between, they swept the rival Yankees.
What's next for this team is anyone's guess.

Boston took two of three from the second-place Rays and then swept the first-place Yankees to pull a game above .500. The Red Sox are 9-17 in one-run games, but they won three of those in a row against Tampa Bay and New York.
All of that seemed to signal a potential turning point for a team that's struggled to sustain success since trading Mookie Betts after the 2019 season. But now the post-Betts era has become the post-Devers era.
It appeared Devers would be a franchise cornerstone for years to come after the Red Sox signed him to a 10-year contract in 2023. Now he's been sent to San Francisco following a tumultuous start to this season. When the Red Sox added Alex Bregman, it opened a new can of worms over where Devers would play, and his relationship with the team went south.
So Boston moves forward — with Devers gone and Bregman and fellow infielder Tristan Casas on the injured list. The Red Sox scored at least eight runs in four of five games from June 4-9. Then they held opponents to one run or fewer in three of their next five.

Anthony is baseball's top-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Boston drafted him with the 79th pick in 2022, and the 21-year-old outfielder had a .914 OPS at Triple-A Worcester when called up.
He's 1 for 17 at the plate so far. Now he might be under even more pressure — both this year and in the future. Boston has just one winning season since trading Betts to the Dodgers.
Next in line?
MLB Pipeline's No. 2 prospect is Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Bubba Chandler, who was drafted 72nd in 2021. He's 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA in 13 starts this year at Triple-A Indianapolis.
The Pirates, of course, already have one outstanding young pitcher in Paul Skenes, and even he hasn't been able to prevent them from falling 15 games under .500. Pittsburgh ranks dead last in the majors with 3.18 runs per game.

Excitement about Chandler's future? Sure. Can he fix what's holding the Pirates back? Perhaps not.
Trivia time
Devers began his career in 2017. Since then, he leads the Red Sox with 215 home runs. Betts is still fourth on that list with 85, even though that only includes three of his seasons in Boston.
Who are the two players between Devers and Betts on that list?
Line of the week
Spencer Strider struck out 13 in six scoreless innings Saturday in Atlanta's 4-1 victory over Colorado. The Braves could desperately use some positive signs from Strider, who is 1-5 with a 4.35 ERA. Atlanta took two of three from the Rockies but is still eight games under .500.
Comeback of the week
The Arizona Diamondbacks scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat San Diego 8-7 on Saturday night. Geraldo Perdomo's three-run triple tied the game with one out, and then Josh Naylor scored Perdomo with a grounder.

San Diego's win probability topped out at 98.7% in the ninth, according to Baseball Savant.
Trivia answer
J.D. Martinez, with 130 homers for the Red Sox since then, and Xander Bogaerts with 115.

Report: Suns exploring trade options involving Boston Celtics Kristaps Porzingis

Could Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis be traded to the Phoenix Suns? Recent reporting from the Stein Line's Jake Fischer hints that just such a move might be in the works, with the two teams reportedly talking about a trade for the Latvian center. Per the Stein Line reporter, "Phoenix has done some background work on ... Porzingis with Boston known to be exploring its trade options up and down the roster." With both ball clubs currently well over the second apron, incurring all the harsh team building penalties that brings with it, a third team would need to be involved for this sort of deal to work. But the Suns need big man depth and hope to remain competitive while trying to reshape their roster, making KP an interesting option with low risk involved as an expiring contract. Whether his deal would be part of the salary moving to a third team for that same reason or as a potential Phoenix target given his upside when healthy would be the most important part of the equation on that side of the deal. What it might bring back to Boston is another question, given his value to the Celtics for both cap relief and his chemistry with the team and fan base when not out of commission. Ex-MLB star Derek Lowe ready to take another swing at American Century Championship

Derek Lowe made a career of being a solid starting pitcher as he helped the Boston Red Sox break the "Curse of the Bambino" during his playing career. The right-handed pitcher was a two-time All-Star with the Red Sox before he eventually played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. As he stepped off the field for the final time as a baseball player during the 2013 season, he would trade his mitt for a golf bag. Lowe will be in the field for the American Century Championship next month at Edgewood Tahoe Result. It is an event he has circled on his calendar all year. "This is No. 1, it really is," he told Fox News Digital in terms of tournaments he has played over the year. "You kind of know roughly when the invitations are coming out, you start checking emails. ... It's hard to explain, we don't have tournaments like this at all. You can play in your member-member, member-guest, what have you, but, I think again for the second or third year in a row it's completely sold out. "It's just an amazing time. I don't know if a lot of people have been out to Tahoe, but it's just a tremendous place. (The) weather, normally every time, has been fantastic. You just never know who you are going to run into. You're sitting at a table and who sits down, Matthew Tkachuk or whoever it is you just don't know. That's the beauty of it. You meet so many great people. So yeah, like I said, about three weeks away, and we can't wait." Lowe finished in fifth place in last year's tournament – behind Mardy Fish, Joe Pavelski, Annika Sorenstam and John Smoltz. He was seventh in 2023 and eighth in 2022. The field will also have Stephen Curry back to defend his 2023 title after not getting a chance last year. The Golden State Warriors star was at the Paris Olympics playing for the U.S. men's basketball team. Lowe, even though he played in MLB for years, admitted he does get a little starstruck meeting some of the superstar athletes and celebrities in the field. "There is no doubt about it. I remember a couple years ago, meeting Stephen Curry or Patrick Mahomes. You definitely do (get starstruck), there is no doubt about it," he said. "You walk in a room and your like, 'Oh.' You try to act cool, calm, collected like you 're not in awe, "But yeah, it really is. We are all sports fans. We all admire especially admire things I can't do. So definitely, I can't say there is one individual guy, but over the years there definitely people you come across, and it is pretty cool you get to meet them." The American Century Championship takes place from July 9-13. The tournament will also raise money for local and national charities. The event is a 54-hole Stableford format in which golfers earn points for each hole based on the score to par. The golfer who achieves the most points wins. Lowe, who is entering his 12th year in the tournament, said it's his "favorite time of year." "The experience of golfing at the beautiful golf course that we play in Tahoe," Lowe explained to Fox News Digital. "The fans are amazing; American Century puts on a great week-long event. I've gotten close a few times but not close enough to win. … It's about a month away, you start playing a little bit more, practicing a little bit more, but everyone loves to go out there and compete but at the end of the day, it's just, the pro-ams they put together are amazing. "It's the greatest week for a lot of us for all year long." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
