Ex-MLB star Derek Lowe ready to take another swing at American Century Championship
Derek Lowe made a career of being a solid starting pitcher as he helped the Boston Red Sox break the "Curse of the Bambino" during his playing career.
The right-handed pitcher was a two-time All-Star with the Red Sox before he eventually played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. As he stepped off the field for the final time as a baseball player during the 2013 season, he would trade his mitt for a golf bag.
Lowe will be in the field for the American Century Championship next month at Edgewood Tahoe Result. It is an event he has circled on his calendar all year.
"This is No. 1, it really is," he told Fox News Digital in terms of tournaments he has played over the year. "You kind of know roughly when the invitations are coming out, you start checking emails. ... It's hard to explain, we don't have tournaments like this at all. You can play in your member-member, member-guest, what have you, but, I think again for the second or third year in a row it's completely sold out.
"It's just an amazing time. I don't know if a lot of people have been out to Tahoe, but it's just a tremendous place. (The) weather, normally every time, has been fantastic. You just never know who you are going to run into. You're sitting at a table and who sits down, Matthew Tkachuk or whoever it is you just don't know. That's the beauty of it. You meet so many great people. So yeah, like I said, about three weeks away, and we can't wait."
Lowe finished in fifth place in last year's tournament – behind Mardy Fish, Joe Pavelski, Annika Sorenstam and John Smoltz. He was seventh in 2023 and eighth in 2022.
The field will also have Stephen Curry back to defend his 2023 title after not getting a chance last year. The Golden State Warriors star was at the Paris Olympics playing for the U.S. men's basketball team.
Lowe, even though he played in MLB for years, admitted he does get a little starstruck meeting some of the superstar athletes and celebrities in the field.
"There is no doubt about it. I remember a couple years ago, meeting Stephen Curry or Patrick Mahomes. You definitely do (get starstruck), there is no doubt about it," he said. "You walk in a room and your like, 'Oh.' You try to act cool, calm, collected like you 're not in awe,
"But yeah, it really is. We are all sports fans. We all admire especially admire things I can't do. So definitely, I can't say there is one individual guy, but over the years there definitely people you come across, and it is pretty cool you get to meet them."
The American Century Championship takes place from July 9-13.
The tournament will also raise money for local and national charities. The event is a 54-hole Stableford format in which golfers earn points for each hole based on the score to par. The golfer who achieves the most points wins.
Lowe, who is entering his 12th year in the tournament, said it's his "favorite time of year."
"The experience of golfing at the beautiful golf course that we play in Tahoe," Lowe explained to Fox News Digital. "The fans are amazing; American Century puts on a great week-long event. I've gotten close a few times but not close enough to win. … It's about a month away, you start playing a little bit more, practicing a little bit more, but everyone loves to go out there and compete but at the end of the day, it's just, the pro-ams they put together are amazing.
"It's the greatest week for a lot of us for all year long."

Arkansas' Gage Wood makes CWS history with no-hitter, strikes out record 19
OMAHA, Neb. — Arkansas junior Gage Wood threw the College World Series's first no-hitter in 65 years Monday in a 3-0 elimination-game victory over Murray State. Wood struck out 19 batters in 119 pitches as the Razorbacks advanced to face either LSU or UCLA on Wednesday at Charles Schwab Field. The right-hander from Batesville, Ark., projected as an early-round pick in next month's MLB Draft, overpowered Murray State with a fastball that consistently hit 97 mph and a devastating curveball. Wood responded by coaxing a foul pop-up and striking out the next two Racers. He fanned two in the first inning, one in the second, then seven consecutively. Then he took out eight of the next nine batters through the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Arkansas first baseman Reese Robinett made a nice play on a ground ball from Carson Garner to end the seventh inning, the only close call of the afternoon. Wood's effort came in just his 10th pitching appearance of the season. He missed two months from February to April this year with a shoulder injury. In his most recent outing before Monday, Wood did not record a strikeout against Tennessee in 3 ⅓ innings as the starter in Arkansas' super-regional-clinching win on June 8. To finish it in Omaha, Wood came out of the Arkansas dugout to an ovation I the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Nico Bermeo got called out for moving into a two-strike pitch that hit him to open the final inning. Wood struck out Conner Cunningham and got Jonathan Hogart to strike out on a 1-2 fastball to end it.

Wrigley Field security upgrades advance — and an MLB All-Star Game in Chicago could follow
Wider sidewalks and new security bollards could soon come to Wrigley Field after aldermen advanced a ballpark security plan Monday. But the new $32.1 million package set to face a final City Council vote Wednesday could bring far more than added safety to the Friendly Confines. Wrigleyville Ald. Bennett Lawson, 44th, hopes the security upgrades funded by a mix of team, city and state money will also help the Cubs land a Major League Baseball All-Star Game. MLB has long requested the improvements in All-Star game discussions, Lawson said. 'The city saw the need to do our part, and the state of course, to facilitate that,' Lawson said late last month. 'I'll let MLB and the Cubs share more details on that news when it happens.' In addition to security bollard installation, the plan that advanced unanimously in the City Council's Zoning Committee Monday would widen sidewalks on Addison Street by four feet and settle a land dispute between the team and the city over a Waveland Avenue parking lot by moving fencing to widen a narrow alleyway. And to pay for the deal, the state plans to pay $12 million, the city will chip in up to $10 million and the team will cover an $8 million chunk, plus any cost overruns and long-term maintenance work. 'Day-to-day operations, this helps improve the security in the area,' Lawson said. 'And my understanding is it does factor in when MLB is considering the All-Star game.' Lawson said he has heard 'nothing official' about the game coming to Chicago, but added that he thinks investments by the team's owners, the Ricketts family, should put the team in line for the baseball festivities. Ricketts family spokesperson Dennis Culloton said that even though the likely-to-come security upgrades might help check off a final box to land an all-star game, the plan is 'about one thing and one thing only,' public safety. 'Making the community safer is important to the entire city,' he said. 'It's beneficial for more than just a baseball game.' Cubs spokesperson Jennifer Martinez-Roth said the plan 'would mean enhanced safety around the ballpark, which is important to us, our fans and visitors alike.' Asked about the potential of an all-star game, she said, 'While we are hopeful, MLB has not made a decision.' League officials typically announce where future all-star games will be played in July, around the same time as the all-star weekend unfolds each year. The team has long sought to bring the game to Chicago, and their push has played out everywhere from radio reports to the mayor's phone in the last year. In February 2024, Mayor Brandon Johnson got a text from his business community liaison Charles Smith letting the mayor know Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts wanted a meeting, according to records obtained by the Tribune via the Freedom of Information Act. 'Also about all star game – I think it's pretty much a done deal,' Smith, vice chair of World Business Chicago, texted Johnson, a lifelong fan of the North Siders. Last month, it seemed the stars had finally aligned for the team and city when WSCR-AM 670 reported the MLB awarded the 2027 All-Star Game to the Cubs. But the team quickly denied the report from their flagship radio station, telling the Tribune 'no decision has been made.'
