Avg cost of data breach in India rises 13 pc to ₹22 cr this year: Report
Mumbai, Aug 7 (PTI) The average cost of an organisation for a data breach has risen 13 per cent to ₹ 22 crore in 2025 from ₹ 19.5 crore in the year-ago period, according to a report released on Thursday. However, despite the surge in costs, the security in artificial intelligence is still lacking, the report by global tech major IBM said. Phishing, or the act of sending fraudulent communication to extract personal information, is the top attack vector, with the usage in 18 per cent of incidents, followed by third-party vendor and supply chain promises at 17 per cent, while vulnerability exploitations accounted for 13 per cent. The research sector in India faced the highest impact from data breaches, with average cost reaching ₹ 28.9 crore, closely followed by the transportation industry at ₹ 28.8 crore and the industrial sector at ₹ 26.4 crore. Amid the widespread use of AI, it said nearly 60 per cent of the breached organisations either don't have an AI governance policy or are still developing a policy. Organisations are bypassing security and governance for AI in favour of do-it-now AI adoption, the IBM report said. "While AI is being rapidly embedded across business operations, security and governance are being left behind. The absence of access controls and AI governance tools is not just a technical oversight; it's a strategic vulnerability," Viswanath Ramaswamy, vice president, technology at IBM India and South Asia, said. The company has come up with the 'Cost of a Data Breach Report' for the last two decades, and has investigated nearly 6,500 data breaches for the same.

EPA cancels USD 7 billion Biden-era grant programme to boost solar energy
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Washington, Aug 7 (AP) The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday terminated a USD 7 billion grant programme that was intended to help pay for residential solar projects for more than 9,00,000 lower-income US households. It's the latest Trump administration move hindering the nation's shift to cleaner energy. The funding, part of Democratic President Joe Biden's Solar for All programme, was awarded to 60 recipients including states, tribes and regions for investments such as rooftop solar and community solar gardens. Solar, a renewable energy, is widely regarded as a way to introduce cleaner power onto the electrical grid and lower energy bills for American consumers. Christopher Waller Emerges As Frontrunner To Replace Fed Chair Powell: Report
President Trump has long criticised Powell for not lowering interest rates aggressively enough. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's term is set to end in 2026. However, well ahead of that deadline, US President Donald Trump has already begun the search for his replacement. According to a Bloomberg News report, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller has emerged as a leading contender to succeed Powell. Waller, who was appointed to the Fed by President Trump in 2020, has recently attracted attention for his policy stance that appears to align with Trump's economic priorities. At the July meeting of the Federal Reserve, Waller, along with Fed Vice Chair Michelle Bowman, another Trump appointee, dissented from the majority view by calling for a cut in interest rates. The rest of the committee opted to keep short-term borrowing costs unchanged. Trump has long criticised Powell for not lowering interest rates aggressively enough. Waller's more dovish stance on monetary policy may appeal to Trump as he looks for someone who could potentially lead a shift in direction at the central bank. Despite his alignment on rates, Waller, a PhD economist, emphasised the importance of Federal Reserve independence in his first speech as governor, highlighting the delicate balance any future chair would need to strike. 'President Trump will continue to nominate the most competent and experienced individuals to deliver on his pledge to Make America Wealthy Again," said White House spokesperson Kush Desai in a statement. Waller has reportedly met with members of Trump's transition team and made a strong impression, although he has not yet had a one-on-one meeting with the President himself. While no final decision has been made, Trump told reporters on Tuesday that his shortlist for Fed Chair is down to four candidates. He confirmed that Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, and former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh are among those being considered. The identities of the remaining two candidates have not been disclosed, but several reports suggest Waller is currently the favourite. Speaking to CNBC last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that the selection process will be methodical. 'We'll be interviewing people, so I would expect that we could have an announcement by the end of the year," he said. Trump also clarified that Bessent, once considered a top contender for the role, has withdrawn from consideration and intends to remain at the Treasury Department. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
