Subiaco transformed into floral wonderland for Mother's Day

Perth Now11-05-2025

Mums were the stars but flowers stole the show in Subiaco this weekend, where art, petals and plenty of love spilled into the streets for a blooming beautiful Mother's Day.
Subi Blooms X Gather transformed roads and shop fronts into living canvas of colour, creativity and culture on Sunday, where visitors of all ages honoured the most important women in their lives.
The floral wonderland consisted of a trail of 15 breathtaking art installations, all tied together under one theme: 'Roots to Bloom', which invited artists to explore heritage, culture and the hidden natural world and beautifully reflected the essence of Mother's Day – honouring where we come from and how we grow.
The festival, which first burst into bloom on Friday and ran the entire weekend, was held in collaboration with Gather: A Floral Community led by renowned florists Rebecca Const and Lara Rose.
Wembley mum Tanya Benwell said the kaleidoscopic collection was 'fantastic' and a beautiful way to celebrate all mothers.

The 39-year-old said her children Madeline, 6, and Harvey, 8, had woken her up 'bright and early at 6am on Sunday' to wish her a happy Mother's Day.
'Apparently my super power is cleaning,' she said of one of the handmade gifts her daughter had made at school.
'Which made me giggle. They both made some beautiful things for me. Mother's Day at Subi Blooms x Gather: Yuka Mochiji her children Miori, left and Kanaho. Credit: Michael Wilson / The West Australian
'And they tiptoed in at the crack of dawn, it was very sweet.'
Both Harvey and Madeline's favourite art installations at Subi Blooms x Gather was a colourful tapestry of flowers that to them felt like a 'fairy land'.
'We all loved that one. And the bike installation,' the mother-of-two said.

Legendary musical set to bring feline magic to Perth crowds

Musical theatre performer Gabriyel Thomas has taken dogged dedication to the next level to make her Jellicle CATS dream come true. During the final weeks of Perth's Sister Act season — where she played Michelle and alternated the role of Deloris Van Cartier — Thomas would spend her weekdays in Sydney-based CATS rehearsals and weekends on the Crown Perth Theatre stage. While that is a lot of frequent flyer points, the 29-year-old said she would have done anything to be in the 40th anniversary Australian tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Not only is the Ohio-born performer in the record-breaking musical, but she has landed the role of former glamour cat and now ostracised feline, Grizabella. Gabriyel Thomas will play Grizabella in the production of Cats that will come to Perth later this year, at Crown Perth. Credit: Ross Swanborough / The West Australian 'My introduction to musical theatre was CATS the musical,' Thomas said, laughing at the full circle moment. 'It's crazy how life plays out that way but my mum just randomly brought home the 1998 VHS one day and from that moment on, I just remember being hooked. 'I don't even know if I would be a performer if it weren't for CATS, which is so crazy that I'm in this rehearsal room now for this show.' Thomas will star in the production alongside Todd McKenney, Mark Vincent, Lucy Maunder, Des Flanagan, Jarrod Draper, Leigh Archer and the rest of the talented ensemble. The show opens in Sydney from June 17 before the tour reaches Crown Theatre Perth on November 8. The tour reaches Crown Theatre Perth on November 8. Credit: Ross Swanborough / The West Australian 'I think the thing that's set apart this experience from any other rehearsal experience is the fact that everyone who is teaching the show is someone who has been a part of the CATS world for years,' Thomas, who is based between New York City and Melbourne, said. 'They love the show, and they have so many different specifics and nuances they're able to bring into the rehearsal space that helps us as actors get into the mindset and get into the world of the show. 'It's just been a magical room, because the people who are teaching the room have already brought the magic there, and they just kind of hold our hand and show us how we can bring that magic to the stage.' CATS is at Crown Theatre Perth from November 8. Ticket presales start June 10, with general public sales from June 13 at

Son's intuition reveals Aussie Olympic gold medallist's pregnancy

Australian Winter Olympic gold medallist Torah Bright has announced she is pregnant with her third child. The 38-year-old former snowboarder has two sons with husband Angus Thomson — and she says it was their eldest who first revealed the latest addition. Bright said they are 'so excited' to become a family of five. 'The boys are hyped and so sweet with their baby growing in my belly!' she wrote. On Wednesday, Bright said they are not learning the gender until the baby arrives. 'But I'm feeling a third boy,' she said. The dual Olympic halfpipe medallist also shared that son Flow 'knew I was pregnant before I actually was'. 'A whole month before I conceived, he was telling people I had a baby in my belly,' Bright wrote. 'Maybe he already knows who this little soul is.' If you'd like to view this content, please adjust your . To find out more about how we use cookies, please see our Cookie Guide. Bright said younger son Halo has also connected with the baby. 'Every night, Halo falls asleep holding my belly — and every morning, he wakes up and kisses it,' she said. 'Our hearts are expanding, and so is our family. So deeply grateful for this growing love. #PregnancyMagic #IntuitiveKids.' Bright made headlines in 2021 when she uploaded a photo of her breastfeeding baby Flow while performing a handstand to celebrate her first Mother's Day. 'Becoming a mother has unleashed something inside of me,' she wrote in the caption. 'It's deeply spiritual. It's primal. It's raw. it's fierce. It is pure.' The post immediately went viral, prompting Bright to address the negative reaction in a video. Bright shared an Instagram story clarifying the post. Credit: Instagram She said it was 'just a little bit of pure fun' and 'celebrating the bond between mother and child'. She also said she could 'understand how it's not everyone's taste' but lamented the judgement. 'Mothers, we need to encourage each other,' she said in the Instagram video. 'We need to lift each other up. We need to pay each other compliments. 'We need to support each other. We need to be each other's biggest cheerleaders because motherhood is so beautiful, but the reality is we are the only ones who know just how hard those hard moments are. 'And we need to have each other's back. Not compare each other and judge each other, because we all do think so differently. That's why it's so beautiful.' She finished the video by asking: 'But did anyone really think that's how I breastfed?'
