Subiaco transformed into floral wonderland for Mother's Day

Perth Now11-05-2025
Mums were the stars but flowers stole the show in Subiaco this weekend, where art, petals and plenty of love spilled into the streets for a blooming beautiful Mother's Day.
Subi Blooms X Gather transformed roads and shop fronts into living canvas of colour, creativity and culture on Sunday, where visitors of all ages honoured the most important women in their lives.
The floral wonderland consisted of a trail of 15 breathtaking art installations, all tied together under one theme: 'Roots to Bloom', which invited artists to explore heritage, culture and the hidden natural world and beautifully reflected the essence of Mother's Day – honouring where we come from and how we grow.
The festival, which first burst into bloom on Friday and ran the entire weekend, was held in collaboration with Gather: A Floral Community led by renowned florists Rebecca Const and Lara Rose.
Wembley mum Tanya Benwell said the kaleidoscopic collection was 'fantastic' and a beautiful way to celebrate all mothers.

The 39-year-old said her children Madeline, 6, and Harvey, 8, had woken her up 'bright and early at 6am on Sunday' to wish her a happy Mother's Day.
'Apparently my super power is cleaning,' she said of one of the handmade gifts her daughter had made at school.
'Which made me giggle. They both made some beautiful things for me. Mother's Day at Subi Blooms x Gather: Yuka Mochiji her children Miori, left and Kanaho. Credit: Michael Wilson / The West Australian
'And they tiptoed in at the crack of dawn, it was very sweet.'
Both Harvey and Madeline's favourite art installations at Subi Blooms x Gather was a colourful tapestry of flowers that to them felt like a 'fairy land'.
'We all loved that one. And the bike installation,' the mother-of-two said.

Iconic twin-cinema marks 30 years with time capsule tribute

Luna Leederville is celebrating 30 years at the heart of Perth's independent cinema scene by looking both back and forward, with a time capsule burial marking its history and community impact. Staff and patrons buried the time capsule at the back of the cinema under a tree today, filled with memorabilia, ticket stubs and handwritten notes. What started in 1994 as a humble twin-screen cinema on the corner of Oxford and Vincent streets has grown into what many dub the beating heart of WA's film culture. Housed inside a heritage-listed Art Deco building, Luna has long been more than just a place to go and watch a movie; it is a cultural hub, a meeting point and, for many, a second home. Community members submitted their own stories highlighting fond memories, funny moments and their shared love for the iconic cinema, which were placed inside the time capsule. 'Luna cinema films constantly change my perceptions of life and rewire my thoughts all the time.' Another wrote: 'As a Leederville resident, some of my fondest memories are, and always will be, at Luna Cinema. There are countless ones to name.' A third added: 'My boyfriend and I can always count on the Luna Cinema to cheer us up when we're having a bad day. It's really just become 'our place' and we spend most date nights here.' Claudia Cukrov, who has worked at the cinema for almost two decades and now manages its social media, said she had heard whispers of the cinema's history, which includes some interesting chapters. 'I have a sneaky suspicion that there used to be porn films shown there … staff had some really strange experiences in the early days with customers still thinking that's what was shown,' Ms Cukrov said. However, the Luna of today is a far cry from those beginnings. Over three decades, it has evolved into a multi-location powerhouse, with expansions to Windsor Luna, Fremantle's Luna on SX, Cinema Paradiso in Northbridge, and even outdoor experiences at Luna Outdoor and Camelot. Much of that growth is credited to Luna Cinemas founder and managing director, Ingrid van den Berghe, whose vision and determination have kept the independent cinema thriving despite massive industry challenges. 'She's weathered competitor cinemas right over the road, the rise of streaming, the pandemic … even the writer's strike,' Ms Cukrov said. Ms Cukrov said Ms van den Berghe's resilience is matched by her loyalty to her staff and the community. 'She took care of every single one of those staff and never let anyone lose their job,' she said. 'Even during the pandemic, when the cinemas weren't open, she kept everyone paid. Ingrid said in an earlier statement: 'Our mission is to provide the people of Perth with titles and experiences not shown anywhere else.' City of Vincent mayor Alison Xamon said the city was proud to contribute a memory to the capsule and support Luna in continuing its legacy of a 'bold, independent cinema in Western Australia'. 'For three decades, Luna Palace Cinemas has been more than a movie theatre,' she said. 'Luna is an iconic cultural landmark, loved by locals and a destination for film fans across WA. 'This time capsule is a brilliant way to celebrate Luna's history and preserve those memories for future generations.' Luna has earned four AIDA awards for Best Metropolitan Independent Cinema.
