Australia will recognise Palestinian state
SYDNEY : Australia will recognise a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, prime minister Anthony Albanese said Monday.
'Until Israeli and Palestinian statehood is permanent, peace can only be temporary,' he told reporters.
'Australia will recognise the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own.'
Several countries, including France, Britain and Canada, have announced plans to recognise statehood for Palestinians since Israel launched a bombardment of Gaza nearly two years ago in response to the Hamas attacks.
Albanese added that he had received assurances from the Palestinian Authority that there would be 'no role for the terrorists of Hamas in any future Palestinian state'.
'There is a moment of opportunity here, and Australia will work with the international community to seize it,' he said.

Modi likely to meet Trump at UN General Assembly next month
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet President Donald Trump during an upcoming visit to the United States to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, The Indian Express newspaper reported, citing sources. An Indian official familiar with the matter said a decision has not yet been taken, and that countries usually reserve slots for the General Debate at the assembly, which is why India's 'head of government' features in a provisional list of speakers on Sept 26. 'The list will go through revisions,' the official said, adding that it had not yet been decided if Modi would be going to the assembly. The General Assembly kicks off on Sept 9, but the debate, the annual meeting of heads of state and government, will be held from Sept 23-29. Although the reason for the potential visit is to attend the UN meeting in New York, a key objective is to hold talks with Trump and iron out trade and tariff issues that have led to some souring of ties between the two countries, the newspaper reported. News of a possible Modi trip to the United States comes days after Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods to penalise New Delhi for continuing to buy Russian oil. The penalty took the total levy on Indian goods exported to the US to 50%, among the highest levied on any US trading partner. Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed after five rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. — Reuters

Gaza aid crisis deepens as foreign NGOs denied entry
JERUSALEM: New Israeli legislation regulating foreign aid groups has been increasingly used to deny their requests to bring supplies into Gaza, according to a joint letter signed by more than 100 groups published Thursday. Ties between foreign-backed aid groups and the Israeli government have long been beset by tensions, with officials often complaining the organisations are biased. The rocky relations have only gotten more strained in the wake of Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel in October 2023. "Israeli authorities have rejected requests from dozens of NGOs to bring in lifesaving goods, citing that these organisations are 'not authorised to deliver aid'," the joint statement reads. According to the letter, whose signatories include Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), at least 60 requests to bring aid into Gaza were rejected in July alone. In March, Israel's government approved a new set of rules for foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working with Palestinians. The law updates the framework for how aid groups must register to maintain their status within Israel, along with provisions that outline how their applications can be denied or registration revoked. Registration can be rejected if Israeli authorities deem that a group denies the democratic character of Israel or "promotes delegitimisation campaigns" against the country. "Unfortunately, many aid organisations serve as a cover for hostile and sometimes violent activity," Israel's Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli told AFP. "Organisations that have no connection to hostile or violent activity and no ties to the boycott movement will be granted permission to operate," added Chikli, whose ministry directed an effort to produce the new guideline. Aid groups say, however, that the new rules are leaving Gazans without help. "Our mandate is to save lives, but due to the registration restrictions civilians are being left without the food, medicine and protection they urgently need," said Jolien Veldwijk, director of the charity CARE in the Palestinian territories. Veldwijk said that CARE has not been able to deliver any aid to Gaza since Israel imposed a full blockade on the Palestinian territory in March, despite partially easing it in May. Israel has long accused Hamas of stealing aid entering the Strip, and since May, the government has relied on the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to manage food distribution centres. According to Gaza's civil defence agency, its operations have been frequently marred by chaos as thousands of Gazans have scrambled each day to approach its hubs, where some have been shot, including by Israeli soldiers.- AFP

NST Leader: Israel's killing fields of journalists
We may be living in the 21st century, but in our midst is an uncivilised state — Israel — led by a despicable tribe of genocidal barbarians. If the genocidal intent was private before, it has now been made public from the prime minister downwards. The Zionist regime led by Benjamin Netanyahu has made a mockery of every piece of international law and the legal institutions that rule on it. Even foreign state ministers and their families are threatened by its secret service, Mossad, for taking Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), like South Africa's former foreign minister and her family were. Even the ICJ was slammed for hearing the genocide case against Israel brought by South Africa. Mossad did the same to the former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, pressuring her to abandon her war crime probe. Israel's pressure on Karim Khan, who is on leave as the chief prosecutor of the ICC, has a more dastardly twist. He now stands accused of sexual misconduct. From Khan's statements to the media, it is now clear that Netanyahu was trying to stop the ICC from issuing arrest warrants for alleged war crimes against him and his former defence minister. We are not surprised. Just recently, Netanyahu recruited the help of US President Donald Trump, who promptly said in his social media post that the trial should be cancelled immediately or a pardon given to "a GREAT HERO". An alleged war criminal on a genocidal rampage, a great hero? A week later the court said it was delaying the case on "security" grounds. What an unruly world we live in. Perhaps all this has to do with Israel's dark history. After all, Israel was an outcome of a lie by the European Jews and the West: the European Jews were people without a land and Palestine, a land without people. Historical facts have proven it to be a fabricated lie for a colonial project. That foundational lie has turned the Zionists into serial liars. The latest lie is that the Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif, killed by Israel's military on Sunday, was a Hamas leader. The fact is, as rights advocates are saying, he was targeted for his frontline reporting on Gaza. To a lying regime, speaking truth to power is a crime. It goes against the Zionist regime's DNA. Al Sharif was one of the 237 journalists assassinated since Oct 7, 2023. Were they all Hamas leaders? Were the four journalists killed along with Al Sharif Hamas leaders, too? As Emma Graham-Harrison writes in her op-ed in The Guardian, Israel is running two campaigns in Gaza: one for the military control of the strip and another for the narrative control of how the world understands what happens there. Israel's answer is to ban foreign journalists, and if they still manage to get in, kill them. Netanyahu, the truth has long ago been out: the pen is mightier than all the weapons you have been supplied.
