Wealthy West Coast city in danger of becoming 'the next Detroit'
A glamorous city known for sprawling mansions, boutique shops and glamor is at risk of becoming 'the next Detroit,' according to experts.
Los Angeles is being rocked by an exodus of big budget TV and film production companies — long considered the backbone of the local economy.
Detroit was once the center of America's auto production, but fell into decline when factories began to shut, triggering a major housing crisis.
Now, some fear LA faces a similar threat. FilmLA reports that on-location production in the city fell by 22.4 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same time last year.
High state taxes are a major factor pushing studios and production companies to shoot elsewhere.
Industry leaders are pushing California to extend an entertainment production tax credit to 35 percent of spending in a bid to stem the flood of projects leaving town, Realtor.com reported.
The issue came to a head at a city town hall on Monday, where advocates pushed for broader eligibility and increased incentives.
'This is not hyperbole to say that if we don't act, the California film and TV industry will become the next Detroit auto,' producer Noelle Stehman told the event according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Detroit was once a thriving economy thanks to General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all having their manufacturing headquarters there.
However, when the plants moved on in the 1960s, the city was left decimated.
The loss of jobs, coupled with the mortgage crisis, drove millions from their homes in the 2000s as their properties were left worthless.
Less than two decades ago, one in five houses stood empty in the city, with foreclosures mounting and properties on deserted streets being sold for $1.
One of the main issues is Tinsel Town's spiraling housing costs that are pricing out middle class production workers, according to Senator Ben Allen.
The median income in the city is $95,625, yet the median home sale price in 2025 is almost 10 times that at $965,300, according to Realtor.com data.
'The studios don't care where they do the work. They'll do it anywhere,' he said at the city town hall.
'They're still producing shows. What a lot of our colleagues simply don't understand is that this is a middle-class problem.
'The studio heads are going to bed in Bel-Air no matter what' he added.
Larger and more widely available tax cuts for the entertainment industry have received support from Governor Gavin Newsom.
Newsom promised back in October to increase film incentives from the current cap of $330 million to $750 million.
SAG-AFTRA members on strike during Halloween on October 31, 2023
Newsom's proposed SB630 bill will be heard by lawmakers at the end of April.
The film and TV exodus is more bad news for Hollywood following 2023's SAG-AFTRA strikes and the devastating wildfires that ripped through the city causing billions of dollars worth of damage earlier this year.
'Loss of filming opportunity in no way compares to the cost of the Eaton and Palisades Fires in terms of loss of life, resident displacement and property damage,' FilmLA VP of Integrated Communications Philip Sokoloski said in a statement.
'The fires sent many productions scrambling to reschedule shoots and displaced hundreds of industry workers from their homes. But their impact on local filming levels appears to have been temporary.'
California has already seen the recent loss of a host of glamorous A-listers including Eva Longoria, Richard Gere and Matthew McConaughey.

I've spent £20k on 24 doll babies – I spend hours a day playing with them, my boyfriend thinks it's odd but I want more
PRIDE & TOY I've spent £20k on 24 doll babies – I spend hours a day playing with them, my boyfriend thinks it's odd but I want more When it comes to babies, I definitely have my hands full. Right now, Louisa is in her baby seat and Albee and Harmony are sleeping in their cots. Zadie and Zelda are in the living room, while their big sisters Pieta, four, and Daida, two, are relaxing on their chairs. Advertisement 4 Mary Lee Beatson loves playing with her babies and has so far collected 24 reborn dolls 4 Mary Lee dressed dolls Albee, Pieta, Daida and Harmony up for St Patrick's Day Meanwhile I'm walking in circles in my living room, soothing Ozzie in my arms. In total I have 24 babies, but my house in Lake City, South Carolina, is peaceful and quiet and my beautiful children never get a day older. That's because I'm a 'reborn mummy'. As a child, I loved stuffed animals and My Little Pony, but I didn't really play with dolls. Then, in October 2022, when I was 39, I was shopping for Halloween decorations when I spotted a zombie doll called Ruby. Advertisement 'Reborn mummy' I was so excited to bring her home and couldn't bear to box her away when the holiday was over. Suddenly, I had a reason to buy cute baby clothes I'd seen while out shopping. It was such fun to dress Ruby that I started to Google other dolls I might buy. That's the first time I read about reborns, which are hyper-realistic, life-sized baby dolls. They're works of art, sculpted and hand-painted to look just like real babies. I was blown away. Inspired by Ruby, I wanted to pick something a little different. In March 2023, I saw a reborn with two faces, painted to look like clowns. I fell in love instantly and called them Penny and Dima. Advertisement Ozzie came next, and after I'd removed the nappy that is always placed over the doll's face by sellers to protect their delicate features, it was so exciting to unwrap him from his box and see his gorgeous face emerge. I've spent £350 on a reborn doll to battle my empty nest - my hubby is 'weirded out' by it but it's been life-changing By April, Albee had arrived, quickly followed by Zadie and Zelda. I never do things by halves. Within months I had three more – Daida, my gorgeous two year old, who is 81cm tall, tiny baby Harmony and Burgundy Rose, a reborn baby werewolf. It made me so happy to see them in my house. I even bought a baby car seat and took Ozzie to work with me. My shift patterns meant I had a room at work to sleep in that I shared with a colleague. Advertisement I know it's a hobby many people don't understand – men in particular find it strange She walked in one day to see Ozzie on the bed and was shocked, thinking I'd left a real baby in there alone! Another colleague gave me an outfit for Pieta, my 101cm-tall four year old, that his daughter had grown out of. They never made me feel that it was weird to have the dolls, and, like my friends and family, they always want to hear about my new arrivals. But I know it's a hobby many people don't understand – men in particular find it strange. That's why I put a photo of me holding a reborn on my Facebook dating profile in November 2024. Advertisement They're a huge part of my life – I can spend hours a day playing with them – and that isn't going to change. I've since met my boyfriend and he accepts it, but finds it odd. The other day we were sitting on the sofa watching TV as I held Ozzie. As I got up to get a drink, I handed him Ozzie, but he looked at me like I'd grown an extra head! 4 Mary Lee has an eclectic collection including reborn werewolf Burgundy Rose 4 Mary Lee snaps doll daughter Melitina 'playing' Twister Advertisement When I take the babies out in public, I get all kinds of reactions. Most people just think they're real, but when I explain they're reborns, I get everything from confusion and intrigued questions, to shock and fear. To me, they have their own personalities. Melitina and Burgundy Rose are energetic and cheeky, Daida is sweet and kind and Ozzie is peaceful. Unlike real children, they're all clean and quiet. They don't make a mess or damage things And, unlike real children, they're all clean and quiet. They don't make a mess or damage things. They're only there to make me feel happy. I love to share our life on my YouTube channel. I might take them for walks, 'feed' them with a real baby bottle filled with fake formula, dress them up for Valentine's Day or just cuddle them. Advertisement Trolls have made comments, but they don't bother me. I think part of what upsets people is how much they cost. So far, I've spent £20,000, with Pieta and Daida costing £1,500 and £2,300 each. I've also made lots of friends with other reborn mums online. I can't wait to keep welcoming reborns into my life. If anyone thinks that's a waste of money, I don't care. I work hard and my dolls bring me a lot of joy. What could possibly be wrong with that?' Follow Mary Lee at

Chilling Clown Motel with thousands of creepy clown dolls and cemetery next door
Welcome to the Clown Motel - 'America's scariest motel' and home to a 5,000-strong clown collection. Just make sure you're prepared for purported 7ft uninvited guests in the middle of the night Anyone looking for a good night's rest while travelling in Nevada may do well to avoid the Clown Motel. Although certainly memorable, anyone who has ever sat through a screening of Stephen King's It will likely sleep with one eye open should they ever find themselves bunking down in one of the motel's 31 unique rooms. Located in the former mining town of Tonopah, approximately three hours outside of Las Vegas, this 'world-famous' landmark is positively filled to the brim with clown figurines - 5,000 to be exact. Oh, and to make visitors' stays all the more disquieting, the Clown Motel is situated slap bang in front of Tonopah Cemetery, a supposed ghostly hot spot swathed in local myth and mystery. Those with a mortal fear of clowns might do well to put their foot firmly on the pedal and drive on by, but for braver souls, a truly one-of-a-kind travelling experience awaits... Indeed, as per the official website, the Clown Motel is "the first choice for Ghost Hunters, Paranormal Investigators, Spooky Fun lovers, YouTubers, Horror Filmmakers, Clown Lovers, and more". The motel first opened its doors way back in 1985 with a collection of 'just' 150 clowns. Leona and Leroy David built the property in memory of their clown-loving father, who is buried in the adjacent Tonopah Cemetery, and decided to use his impressive collection as a theme. Since then, things have continued to grow and evolve. The establishment prides itself on being 'America's scariest motel', as evidenced in the range of creatively named spooky rooms. Drawing from horror movie history, guests - whether they're there to commune with the dead or simply bed down for the night - can choose to stay in The Exorcist room, the Chucky room, or the Halloween room -all decked out, of course, with plenty of eerie artwork. Whether you'll be left laughing or screaming by the time the night's through remains to be seen. However, Tripadvisor reviews left by previous patrons offer some idea of what's in store. One happy customer wrote: "We had good fun, and even better, we weren't murdered. Not even a little bit murdered. The guy at the front desk is excellent. Truly excellent. We'd certainly come back someday. Did I mention that no clowns murdered us? They didn't even try. #HadFun #NotMurdered." Another enthused: "We stayed in the IT room and had a blast! They offered an EMF reader, and we had fun looking for spirits in the old graveyard. This was a fun experience and we will remember it for a long time to come!" Now, any bumps in the night will likely be due to nerves rather than any red-nosed terrors lurking under your bed. However, there are those who are convinced that something otherworldly stalks its candy-striped corridors. According to the Las Vegas Ghost Tours website, those who've slept in room 108, which features a life-size mural of Pennywise, have reported inexplicable encounters, while a mischievous spirit referred to as 'The Trickster' is believed to move belongings around, and may even make them vanish completely. As well as disembodied voices and disquieting scratching sounds, some guests swear to having woken to the sight of a 7-foot-tall clown standing ominously at the foot of their bed, while others claim to have answered knocks on their door, only to find there's nobody on the other side.
