Moscow Metro, World's Longest Circular Metro Line, Celebrates 90 Years of Operation
Maksim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, said, 'The opening of the Metro in 1935 was a historic event for our capital and the entire country. Even then, decades ago, the workers and builders set the highest standards for passenger service. Today, in line with the goals set by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, we continue to uphold that standard. More than 65,000 people are currently employed by the Moscow Metro. They not only help serve millions of passengers every day, but also work hard to earn the continued trust of Muscovites, so that each journey leaves a positive impression. I want to thank every employee for their dedication and wish them continued success.'
Initially launched with a single line spanning 11.5 kilometers and 13 stations, the Moscow Metro has expanded steadily over the past nine decades. In 2024 alone, the system transported 2.7 billion passengers.
Modernization has been a continuous process. Today, more than 75% of trains are newly developed models equipped with features such as automated speed control, open gangways, and updated safety systems. These advancements enable high-frequency operations, with intervals as short as 90 seconds during peak hours.
The system has also implemented digital ticketing solutions, including smart cards, virtual ticket options, and biometric payments, now used in the majority of daily trips. These technologies aim to streamline passenger flow and improve accessibility.
To mark the anniversary, a series of events and exhibitions were organized in the city, highlighting both the history and evolution of the metro system. Public displays featured restored early-generation trains and archival materials documenting the network's development.
As one of the world's most heavily used metro systems, the Moscow Metro continues to play a central role in urban transportation, reflecting broader trends in infrastructure investment, technological integration, and mass transit development over the past century.

Oil falls as IEA raises supply forecast, investors await US-Russia meeting
LONDON - Oil prices edged lower on Wednesday after the IEA noted supply overtaking demand this year, while investors awaited Friday's meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Brent crude futures fell 41 cents, or 0.6%, to $65.71 a barrel by 1037 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures edged down 50 cents, or 0.8% to $62.67. Both contracts settled lower on Tuesday. "The API oil inventory report last night together with a dovish oil market outlook from the IEA today weighed on prices," said UBS commodity analyst Giovanni Staunovo. The International Energy Agency on Wednesday raised its forecast for oil supply growth this year but lowered its demand forecast due to lacklustre fuel demand across the major economies. Meanwhile, in its monthly report on Tuesday OPEC+ raised its global oil demand forecast for next year and trimmed estimates of supply growth from the United States and other producers outside the wider group, pointing to a tighter market. "Were we to take an aggregate of the respective IEA and OPEC oil demand growth projections for 2025 at their respective bearish and bullish ends, even a modest middle figure say just north of 1 million bpd can easily be serviced by non-OPEC supply growth alone at the moment," said independent energy analyst Gaurav Sharma. "So, I don't see a bullish case for oil over the near-term horizon." Meanwhile, crude inventories in the United States, the world's biggest oil consumer, rose by 1.52 million barrels last week, market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. Gasoline inventories dropped while distillate inventories gained slightly. Analysts polled by Reuters expect today's Energy Information Administration report to show crude inventories fell by about 300,000 barrels last week. Trump and Putin are due to meet in Alaska on Friday to discuss ending Russia's war in Ukraine, which has shaken oil markets since February 2022. "It's difficult to see what comes out of the meeting on Friday, particularly if the Europeans are not present in Alaska," Staunovo added. While Trump's administration has tried to temper expectations for major progress toward a ceasefire, calling the summit a "listening exercise", Ukraine and most European countries have said a lasting peace cannot be secured without Ukraine at the negotiating table.

European shares near two-week highs on Fed rate cut hopes
European shares hit a near two-week high on Wednesday, with technology and defence stocks recovering from recent losses, after tame U.S. inflation data cemented expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve next month. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.5%, as of 0904 GMT, trading at its highest since July 31. Wall Street indexes closed at record highs on Tuesday after data showed a mild inflation bump in July, offering relief to investors worried about U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs lifting price pressures. Traders are currently pricing in a 96% chance of a Fed rate cut in September, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool. There is a bit of growing expectation of a rate cut, maybe even a 50-basis-point cut, although that seems unlikely, said Gene Salerno, chief investment officer for UK Wealth Management at UBP. "Those factors are giving some enthusiasm, but the market might be a bit overexuberant about what they can read into from that." Closer home, d ata showed German inflation eased to 1.8% in July, confirming preliminary data, a sign of easing price pressures in Europe's biggest economy. Leaders from Europe and Ukraine are set to speak to Trump later in the day ahead of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump will host Putin at talks in Alaska on Friday that the U.S. president has said will serve as a "feel-out" meeting in his efforts to end the Russo-Ukraine war. Defense stocks rose 1.4%, recovering from recent losses amid expectations of an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Rheinmetall and Renk added 2.9% and 5.4%, respectively. Renk reported better-than-expected second-quarter revenue with the German tank gearbox maker benefitting from increased European defence spending. The technology sector climbed 1.4% after falling to a three-month low in the previous session. Nearly half of the STOXX 600 companies have reported second-quarter results so far, and 54% of them have beat earnings estimates, in-line with the beat rate in a typical quarter, according to LSEG I/B/E/S data. Glanbia shares jumped to the top of the STOXX 600 index, adding 12.6% after the nutrition supplement maker posted first-half results and said the tariff hit was 'manageable.' UK insurer Beazley dropped 9.6% after it trimmed its annual premium growth forecast. Evolution fell 10.6% to the bottom of the STOXX 600 after a Bloomberg report based on a court filing showed the online gambling company's casino games made their way illegally to banned markets.
