US authorities probe after plane narrowly misses mid-air crash with military bomber

Khaleej Times3 days ago
US aviation regulators said Monday they are investigating a recent close call in which a passenger plane took emergency action to avoid a mid-air collision with a US military bomber.
A Delta flight operated by SkyWest took off Friday from Minneapolis and was approaching the city of Minot, North Dakota when the pilot rapidly rerouted after seeing another aircraft nearing from the right.
"I don't know how fast they were going, but they were a lot faster than us, I felt it was the safest thing to do to turn behind it," the pilot told passengers, according to recorded audio of the commercial pilot

"Sorry about the aggressive maneuver," he said. "This is not normal at all."
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that US officials are "investigating the event involving SkyWest Airlines Flight 3788 at Minot International Airport on Friday, July 18".
SkyWest said it has also begun a probe. The flight was cleared for approach by the tower "but performed a go-around when another aircraft became visible in their flight path," the carrier said in a statement reported by US media.
The US Air Force did not provide specifics about the near miss but confirmed in a statement reported by the Washington Post that a B-52 bomber was performing a flyover at the North Dakota State Fair, which took place in Minot.
The northern city, about 50 miles (80 kilometres) from the Canada border, is home to a commercial airport and a US Air Force base.
In the video, posted to Instagram and verified by Storyful, the SkyWest pilot told passengers that "nobody told us" about the other plane.
He said the Minot tower, which does not use radar — a common situation in smaller, more remote airfields in the United States — offered guidance that could have put the passenger jet in jeopardy.
"He said 'Turn right.' I said there's an airplane over there. And he says 'Turn left,'" the pilot said.
The passenger who recorded the video, Monica Green, said she was "sick to my stomach" about the near miss.
Green, quoted by NBC News, said she felt the jet take a hard turn and then "I just remember the plane going, like, sideways... and just looking straight out the window and just seeing grass" with no visible skyline.
The incident comes less than six months after a US Army helicopter collided with an American Airlines jet approaching Washington's Reagan National Airport, killing all 67 people aboard both aircraft.
The disaster prompted federal authorities and Congress to review coordination between military and civilian aircraft flying in the same airspace.

Etihad Airways brings first-class luxury to small planes in rare move

Etihad Airways took delivery of its first Airbus A321LR in Hamburg on Thursday, featuring first-class seats on a small plane – a departure from industry norms, where premium cabins are typically found on long-haul flights aboard wide-body aircraft. This is the first of 20 A321LR aircraft to join Etihad's fleet, leased from AerCap, the world's largest aircraft lessor, the airline said on Thursday. Commercial flights start on August 1. The Abu Dhabi-based airline is known for its ultra-luxury product, The Residence – a three-room configuration featuring a private bedroom, an en suite shower and a living area with a Savoy-trained personal butler – available on the mammoth double-decker Airbus A380. Now, Etihad is introducing a first-class suite on its long-range, single-aisle A321LR jet, flying short-to-medium-haul routes. Analysts say the ambitious cabin layout is unusual in the industry. 'It's extremely rare,' said Linus Bauer, founder and managing director of UAE-based boutique aviation consultancy BAA & Partners. The A321LR and longer-range A321XLR aircraft have been mainly positioned as 'premium-capable narrowbodies, but first-class installations remain an exception', he said. 'Typically, first class is the domain of wide-body, long-haul aircraft where both cabin space and yield potential justify the added cost and real estate,' he said. First class has increasingly become a niche product and many airlines have ceased offering it on their long-haul routes, said John Strickland, aviation analyst and director of JLS Consulting. 'That said, there is a core market in the Gulf region which Etihad can tap,' he said. 'Back to the game' Etihad Airways' boss said the first-class offering on narrow-body jets will be a game-changer for the airline. 'I'm 100 per cent confident that the product we've designed is going to be wow for first-class customers in a narrow-body … Etihad is back to the game,' Antonoaldo Neves, Etihad's chief executive, told The National ahead of the delivery. 'It's not about the size of the plane that you cannot create a first-class experience. It's all about execution and the product you offer.' Amenities in the new first-class suite include two private, enclosed spaces with sliding doors, lie-flat beds and companion seating, along with a large 20in 4K screen for entertainment, with Bluetooth pairing and wireless charging. 'Today marks an extraordinary moment for Etihad as we welcome an aircraft that changes everything we thought possible on a single-aisle plane,' Mr Neves said. 'The A321LR enables us to serve more destinations with the same premium experience.' A321LR routes Etihad's A321LR will operate from Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport to short- and medium-haul destinations across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It will initially fly to Phuket before expanding service to Algiers, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Kolkata, Krabi, Krakow, Medan, Milan, Paris, Phnom Penh, Tunis and Zurich. An additional nine A321LR aircraft will be delivered throughout 2025, supporting the airline's ambitious growth plans to carry 38 million passengers annually by the end of the decade. This target has been revised up from a previous goal of 33 million and forms part of its Journey 2030 strategy, which also calls for doubling its fleet size. Etihad is aggressively expanding its network, having launched or announced 27 new routes this year. The A321LR is a longer-range variant of Airbus' A321neo. The aircraft has a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles (7,400km), thanks to three additional centre tanks that store extra fuel. Airbus says airlines can configure the A321LR cabin with layouts ranging from a single-class arrangement to multi-class set-ups featuring full-flat premium seats. Luxury in smaller confines Etihad seems to be using the A321LR features as a differentiator in the market, rather than a people-mover, analysts said. 'This isn't just about seat segmentation. It's a continuation of Etihad's boutique pivot – an identity centred around bespoke, high-touch experiences, especially post-pandemic,' Mr Bauer said. 'In the age of upgauging and densification, this is a contrarian move – but one that could carve out a defensible niche.' The product is also a differentiator on popular, high-yield, regional routes with high competition. Putting the premium experiences associated with large planes on to narrow-bodies helps airlines like Etihad to preserve brand consistency across the board, Mr Linus said. 'For Etihad, a first class suite on a narrowbody ensures continuity with its wide-body experience and upsells to ultra-high-net worth individuals or VIPs travelling regionally or connecting onward in premium cabins,' he said. A321LR features First Suites: private, enclosed spaces with sliding doors, fully-flat beds. Each window-facing suite features a 20in 4K screen, Bluetooth pairing, wireless charging, and additional space for a companion to sit. Business Class: features 14 wide-body-style seats with a 17.3in 4K screen, Bluetooth headphone pairing and wireless charging. Economy Class: 144 seats that are 18.4in wide, with a five-inch recline, 13.3in, 4K touchscreens and USB charging.

Queen Alia International Airport records highest-ever H1 traffic with 4.4mln passengers in 2025

Amman: Airport International Group concluded the first half of 2025 with notable milestones spanning operations, infrastructure, sustainability, digital transformation and CSR at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), advancing strategic initiatives that reinforce the airport's operational resilience and commitment to a world-class passenger experience. During H1 2025, QAIA served 4,406,690 passengers - the airport's highest-ever first-half traffic performance - marking a 6% growth over H1 2024. This increase was fueled by the return of regional and European routes and heightened travel during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Meanwhile, aircraft movements (ACM) totaled 36,331, up 2.2%, whereas cargo volumes reached 32,086 tons, down 16.5%. In June 2025, QAIA welcomed 717,840 passengers, representing a 16.6% decrease compared to June 2024 due to regional tensions and resulting flight disruptions. QAIA also recorded 5,827 ACM and handled 4,174 tons of cargo, indicating a 19.6% and 27.5% year-on-year decline, respectively, against June 2024. In the first half of 2025, QAIA witnessed a significant rebound in airline activity, marked by the resumption of services by several carriers and the introduction of new airlines and routes. flyadeal and Ajet resumed operations at QAIA, while Royal Jordanian expanded its global network with the launch of their own routes to Damascus, Aleppo, Mumbai and Washington D.C. Meanwhile, Libyan Wings and SunExpress commenced operations at the airport. These developments underscore QAIA's growing appeal as a regional hub and its continued efforts to enhance connectivity across key markets. A key sustainability milestone was the April inauguration of the Shams al Mattar Lil-Taqa Solar Farm, operated by Shams al Mattar lil-Taqa (Kawar Investment). The 4.8 MWac facility generates over 10.5 GWh of electricity annually, covering nearly 25% of Airport International Group 's operational energy requirements. In addition to lowering costs, the solar farm reduces approximately 12,000 tons of CO₂ emissions yearly, positioning QAIA as one of the largest solar-powered airports in the MENA region. In January, ground handlers, Menzies Aviation, in collaboration with Aviation Handling Services (AHS), opened a second 8,000 sqm air cargo facility - doubling QAIA's cargo handling capacity and streamlining operations while creating new employment opportunities. Enhancing passenger flow through technology, a trial phase for new e-gates was launched in June to expedite travel procedures for Jordanian citizens. A total of nine smart gates were installed - five in the Arrivals Hall and four in the Departures Area - enabling a faster and more seamless travel experience while also boosting the airport's overall operational efficiency during high-traffic periods. QAIA's commitment to customer satisfaction was reaffirmed in March when it was named the 'Most Enjoyable Airport in the Middle East' for the second time, based on the ACI World 2024 ASQ Survey. This recognition followed the successful renewal of Level 3 of the ACI World Airport Customer Experience Accreditation in February, further attesting to ongoing efforts to elevate passenger service quality. As part of its focus on commercial development, Airport International Group signed a strategic agreement with Extime JCDecaux Airport - a globally renowned airport advertising company - to deploy innovative and sustainable advertising solutions that deliver value to advertisers while further enriching the overall passenger journey. Underscoring its youth empowerment efforts, Airport International Group Foundation (AIGF) commenced a new round of vocational training courses via its 'Hirfati' training center, registering a 20% increase in applications. Six courses ultimately benefited 75 participants across Fashion Design and Tailoring (12), Programming and Software Development (13), Health and Occupational Safety (13), Mobile Phone Maintenance (12), HVAC (13) and Warehouse Management (12). Reflecting on the accomplishments of the past six months, Airport International Group CEO, Nicolas Deviller, stated, 'The first half of 2025 emphasizes the enduring strength of QAIA as a vital national asset and a cornerstone of Jordan's air transport sector. In the face of regional adversity, we remained focused on growing our traffic and delivering impactful projects, innovative enhancements and passenger-centric services that uphold the highest international standards and shape QAIA into a welcoming airport that feels like home. With the steadfast support of our employees, partners and stakeholders, we are confident that the foundations laid during this period will drive success throughout the remainder of the year and beyond.' About Airport International Group Airport International Group is a Jordanian company comprising local and international investors with proven experience in airport rehabilitation, enhancement, operation and management. These include Groupe ADP (51%), Meridiam Eastern Europe Investments (32%), Mena Airport Holding Ltd. (12.25%) and Edgo Investment Holdings Ltd. (4.75%). In 2007, following a transparent and open international tender, the Government of Jordan awarded Airport International Group a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) concession agreement to manage the rehabilitation, expansion and operation of Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA); Jordan's prime gateway to the world. Since the agreement commenced, QAIA ranked first place for eight years in the Airport Service Quality Survey's 'Best Airport by Size and Region: Middle East' category for airports serving 5 to 15 million passengers; was amongst the top two in the 'Best Airport by Region: Middle East' category for four consecutive years; and was named 'Most Enjoyable Airport in the Middle East' twice. In 2022, QAIA became the first airport in the Middle East and the second in Asia Pacific to reach Level 4+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program (valid until 2028), as well as the first airport in the Middle East to achieve Level 3 of the Airport Customer Experience Accreditation (renewed until February 2026). Moreover, in 2024, QAIA attained a 4-Star Airport Rating following its first-ever participation in the SKYTRAX World Airport Audit, signifying that staff service or product standards meet a good quality level. According to a comprehensive study commissioned by Airport International Group and conducted by International Air Transport Association (IATA) Consulting, in 2019, QAIA supported 238,000 jobs and JOD 2.5 billion (8.9%) in GDP. By 2032, these figures are expected to increase to 278,000 jobs and JOD 3.9 billion in GDP. Underscoring its socioeconomic significance and standing as the main entry point to the Kingdom, QAIA processes over 97% of passengers and 99% of cargo.
