Tsutomu Ogura steps down as Singapore Lions coach for personal reasons
SINGAPORE, June 25 — Tsutomu Ogura has stepped down as head coach of the Singapore national team for personal reasons, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced yesterday.
The Japanese coach took charge in February last year, guiding Singapore to the semi-finals of the Asean Championship.
'Mr Ogura informed the FAS of his decision several weeks ago, citing the need to return to his home country to attend to pressing personal matters,' it said in a statement.
'The FAS respects Mr Ogura's decision and extends its sincere appreciation for his professionalism, commitment, and contribution to Singapore football during his time at the helm.'
Following Ogura's departure, former Tampines Rovers head coach Gavin Lee will step in as the country's interim manager. — Reuters

MIAMI, June 25 — Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano is hoping that Lionel Messi's memories of his unhappy time at Paris Saint-Germain will fire him up for Sunday's clash between the two teams in the Club World Cup. Miami were surprise qualifiers from Group A after beating Porto and drawing with Palmeiras and Al Ahly and now face the daunting task of playing the recently crowned European champions. Messi joined Miami after two seasons in the French capital and made clear he had not enjoyed his time with PSG. 'It's clear that it would better for us if he was angry, because he's one of those players who, when he has something in mind, gives a bit extra,' Mascherano told ESPN. The Argentine coach was clear though that the emotions will be less than if Messi were up against PSG on European soil rather than facing his old team in Atlanta. 'I think that's in the past now, it's another story. Also, the fact that it's here in the United States, I don't think the atmosphere will be the same, but what we will try to do is play a great game. We know that in order to have a chance, we have to play a perfect game, and well, we'll go for it,' he said. After joining Miami in Major League Soccer, Messi reflected on his time in Paris saying it had been 'difficult'. 'I spent two years that I didn't enjoy. I wasn't happy on a day-to-day basis, with the training sessions, the games, I found it hard to adapt to all that,' he said. The eight-times Ballon d'Or winner will face a very different PGS to the one that he left with the club having been transformed under Spanish coach Luis Enrique. Luis Enrique is a familiar face for several of the Miami team who played under him at Barcelona. 'He's the best' Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Messi and Mascherano all featured for Enrique's Barca, winning the treble under him in 2015. 'I've said it infinite times: For me, he's the best – I think not just as a coach, but also how he manages the group,' said Alba, who also worked with Luis Enrique with the Spanish national team. 'He's a phenomenon. I'm excited to see him, as well as his entire staff. I'll give him a hug but when the ref blows the opening whistle, try to beat him. Which is what all of us here are trying to do' added the left-back. Suarez, who scored in the 2-2 draw with Palmeiras on Monday, was also full of praise for the Spanish coach. 'For me, along with Maestro (Oscar) Tabarez of the (Uruguay) national team, he was the most important coach of my career, for what they taught me, for what I learned in the day-to-day with them,' he said. 'He's a coach who influenced me greatly. I already had a competitive DNA, but he injected even more into me. He taught me how to move within a space where I had to play a role I wasn't used to, not touching the ball a lot ... Not to mention on a personal level, a relationship of great respect and admiration for what he generated for us as players.' Mascherano, in his first club coaching job, said he remains a personal friend of the PSG coach and his family. 'That is the beautiful thing about football sometimes. E-sports team Paper Rex's triumph at Valorant Masters a major win for Singapore, South-East Asia

The team of mostly South-East Asian (SEA) players emerged victorious in the grand final of Valorant Masters Toronto, beating the formidable Fnatic 3-1 at the Enercare Centre on June 22 to claim the US$350,000 top prize. London-based team Fnatic, the 2023 Masters winners, had fought their way through the losers' bracket and put up a formidable challenge in the best-of-five final, before losing the tense 4½-hour battle in the popular first-person shooter video game. Wang 'Jinggg' Jing Jie, the only Singaporean player on the Paper Rex roster, could barely contain his delight after securing the long-awaited victory to make up for the disappointment of losing in the grand final of the 2023 Valorant Champions. The Champions tournament is a higher tier than Masters competitions. Said the 21-year-old: 'It's surreal. The feeling is just setting in. I'm proud of myself and my team. I'm happy to be able to represent not just my country but also fly all the flags of our home SEA region.' While Paper Rex are based in Singapore, their players come mainly from around the region. 'I'm sure it will dawn on me eventually that we've achieved one of our goals.' The 35-year-old Frenchman and Singapore permanent resident paid tribute to the immense support from their fans in the region 'which drives us forward'. Besides the support, he also attributed their victory to 'a holistic approach to player training and development'. Salle said: 'We have a performance coach and watch what we eat. I think we found a balance that worked for us. I think this is a sign that perhaps e-sports is maturing into a professional athletic sport.' Chelsea sweep past Esperance 3-0 to book Club World Cup clash with Benfica
PHILADELPHIA, June 24 — Goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap and Tyrique George saw Chelsea's second-string side secure a place in the round of 16 at the Club World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis in their final Group D match on Tuesday. Group winners Flamengo were held 1-1 by Los Angeles FC to finish on seven points, one ahead of Chelsea. Esperance finished third with three points while LA FC were bottom with one point. Chelsea next face Group C winners Benfica on Saturday at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, while Flamengo take on Bayern Munich, Group C runners-up, in Miami on Sunday.
