Ruud van Nistelrooy drops huge hint over Leicester future after Foxes are relegated back to the Championship
RUUD VAN NISTELROOY has dropped a big hint about his future after Leicester were relegated.
The Foxes fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Liverpool courtesy of Trent Alexander-Arnold 's dramatic winner 14 minutes from time.
1
That was Leicester's 23rd Premier League defeat of the season with Van Nistelrooy winning just two of his 21 league matches in charge.
Despite his record, Van Nistelrooy is hopeful he will be given the chance to continue in his role and lead the rebuild at the King Power Stadium.
He said following Leicester's relegation: "I'm focused on taking my responsibility to do the best things for the future and next season.
"Performances like Brighton and the Liverpool game are signs that the players are willing to do that.
"We have to take responsibility and that's what I'm doing for the next five weeks and after that we have to see."
Van Nistelrooy highlighted the gulf in quality between the three promoted sides and the rest of the division, with Leicester and Southampton set to be joined by Ipswich in the Championship next season.
He is still keen on the job however and spoke about coming to an agreement with the owners over staying on.
Asked if he wants to continue, Van Nistelrooy said: "Of course. Then you have to find each other.
"The winter window went a certain way and we have to take that into evaluations moving forward.
"If we are willing to do so, both sides, then we have to find each other, and of course the sooner the better."
He added: "I expected to get more points than I was able to get.
"I think there some very good performances and that's what we've said in press conferences and there were games where didn't perform to our capabilities.
"Over 33 games, it's the level of the three promoted sides - the gap has been too big compared to the other 17 teams - it's a clear, difference in quality with two teams relegated already and the other one 15 points back with five games - that's the first conclusion and most important one."

Liverpool star pushes for transfer exit ahead of imminent Florian Wirtz arrival
Liverpool are closing in on a club-record deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, but the German's arrival could spell the end for another of Arne Slot's players Federico Chiesa is set to push for a summer exit from Liverpool, with Florian Wirtz closing in on a move to Anfield. Chiesa joined the Reds last summer in a £10million deal from Juventus. But he has found his opportunities on Merseyside limited in the extreme. The Italian made just 14 appearances in all competitions, registering only two goals, with Arne Slot preferring Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo on the wings. Chiesa was handed just one Premier League start and even that only came in the penultimate game of the campaign, after Liverpool had wrapped up the title. The 27-year-old was generally seen as the sixth-choice attacking option by Slot. He could slip even further down the pecking order after Liverpool complete their business this summer. The Reds are pushing hard to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Wirtz in what would be a club record deal. They submitted an improved offer for the German on Saturday and an agreement is expected to be reached. That has placed Chiesa in a difficult position as bids to return to the Italy squad in time for next summer's World Cup. It is understood that with Wirtz on his way in, Chiesa is now looking to cut his stay with Liverpool short. The attacker's priority is on securing a move back to his native Italy. While he loves Liverpool as a club and city, his limited game time has become a serious issue. Several Serie A sides have already started talks and are seeking to be kept informed on any room for a deal. Chiesa's decision to seek an exit comes as somewhat of a U-turn from the 27-year-old. On Friday, he insisted he was happy on Merseyside and that he would be happy to remain with the Reds. He told Corriere dello Sport: 'The year is over. But it's an experience I would do again. Soon I will sit down at the table with the club, Fali (Ramadani, his agent) and my family to find the best solution. I wouldn't mind staying in Liverpool at all. "You accept the choices as a professional and you move on. In the first few months there were many difficulties, if you think that I arrived in Liverpool on August 26 and found myself catapulted to another planet, with other teammates, without having trained with them. "At the beginning I felt the frustration of the radical change and of being far behind the group, then there was the injury. Could I start to discuss the choices of Slot who has always been very respectful towards me, as well as the club? The desire to play was there, I put it aside, I understood the situation." The news regarding Chiesa comes as Liverpool submitted an improved bid for Wirtz. The new offer is for £100m to be paid to Leverkusen upfront, with an extra £13m in add-ons. That is an improvement on the original £109m bid Liverpool submitted, with the Reds having no intention of agreeing to the £126.4m price tag Leverkusen have slapped on the playmaker.

Sadio Mane to miss England match after making 'personal request' to Senegal boss
England are due to host Senegal at the City Ground on Tuesday, but Sadio Mane will not be in action for the visitors after asking to be left out of Pape Thiaw's squad Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane asked to be left out of Senegal's showpiece friendly against England after being targeted by critics and trolls over his recent performances for the African country. Mane, 33, the winger who thrilled Anfield for six years playing in tandem with Mo Salah, was gutted to be singled out for widespread stick after the two World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Togo in March. His request to miss Friday night's clash against the Republic of Ireland and the meeting with England at the City Ground in Nottingham on Tuesday night 'for personal reasons' was reluctantly accepted by coach Pape Thiaw. Mane, who plays alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, already faces an uncertain future at club level after being told by the Saudi Pro League club that he is free to find new employers this summer. Senegal coach Thiaw said: 'It is a personal decision that belongs to Mane - and I respect it as a coach. Sadio is a very important player for us. 'But I don't coach one player, I coach 26 players, and so the most important thing is the collective. I have put together a squad of players who are available and ready to fight with pride for the national jersey.' Mane has scored 45 goals in 113 appearances for Senegal since making his international debut in 2012. He scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out win over Salah's Egypt in the African Cup of Nations final in 2021 after missing a spot-kick early in the game. Mane was named player of the tournament that year after scoring three times and also weighing in with two assists. But the two-time African Footballer of the Year now believes he is first in line to be criticised - despite becoming a national hero for his exploits on the pitch and his charity work off it. Senegal's squad includes Premier League stars like Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace, Tottenham's Pape Sarr and Idrissa Gana Gueye of Everton. But the spotlight continually falls on the player who excelled for Metz, Red Bull Salzburg, Southampton, Liverpool and Bayern Munich during 12 years in Europe. Senegal are currently second in the 2026 World Cup qualification table, a point behind DR Congo after being held to a goalless draw with Sudan before beating Togo 2-0. Mane said: 'A lot is said about me and I think I'm the most criticised player in Senegal. 'I don't have a problem with it. Everyone is free to give their opinion. But there must be better things to do than criticise Sadio Mane. What does it even get you?' Augustin Senghor, the president of the Senegalese Football Federation, said: 'Of course, it's a heartbreak because everyone knows what Sadio means to our team. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise, both for him and for us. 'We hope to have him back in top form for future matches, but this is a great opportunity for others to show themselves. The most important thing is that Sadio is there and ready for the big events to come.'

Florian Wirtz's staggering Liverpool salary demands as talks reach crucial stage
Florian Wirtz will become Liverpool's second-best paid player behind Mohamed Salah if he completes a record-breaking transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in the coming days Florian Wirtz is set to treble his wages if he seals a record transfer to Liverpool, with the Germany playmaker expecting to bank an eye-watering £355,000-per-week. The Premier League champions have submitted a third bid - £100m up front with £15m extra in add-ons - that Bayer Leverkusen look set to reject as they hold out for an estimated £124m up front. But talks remain active between the clubs and a report in Bild says that the Bundesliga player of the season will also become the Reds' second best-paid player if he rocks up at Anfield - behind Mohamed Salah 's £400,000 but ahead of Virgil van Dijk's £350,000. Wirtz, 22, has made it clear that Liverpool is the destination he wants and Manchester City have stepped back from their initial interest. Sporting director Richard Hughes is at the forefront of the negotiations and Wirtz is prepared to jet in for a medical next week after featuring for his national team against France in Sunday afternoon's UEFA Nations League third-place play-off. On Friday Leverkusen published images promoting their pre-season tour to Brazil - from July 14 to 24 - featuring an image of Wirtz. The club will use the training facilities of Flamengo while in Rio de Janeiro. But there is a growing expectation that he will be leaving the Bundesliga's second-placed team with Bild saying that the player has already agreed a contract until the summer of 2030 while talks around the fee continue. Liverpool have already completed the signing of full back Jeremie Frimpong - their replacement for Real Madrid-departing Trent Alexander-Arnold - from Leverkusen and are looking to seal a £45m deal for Bournemouth 's Milos Kerkez in the coming days. Arne Slot's squad is also likely to be bolstered with a new centre forward amid doubts around the future of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan has struggled to settle in two seasons at the club and remains linked with a switch to Atletico Madrid, whose head coach Diego Simeone is a major fan. Earlier this week former Reds striker Emile Heskey claimed that the club "have got to" strengthen at No9 ahead of next season's attempted defence of their Premier League title.
