Sadio Mane to miss England match after making 'personal request' to Senegal boss

Daily Mirror19 hours ago

England are due to host Senegal at the City Ground on Tuesday, but Sadio Mane will not be in action for the visitors after asking to be left out of Pape Thiaw's squad
Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane asked to be left out of Senegal's showpiece friendly against England after being targeted by critics and trolls over his recent performances for the African country.
Mane, 33, the winger who thrilled Anfield for six years playing in tandem with Mo Salah, was gutted to be singled out for widespread stick after the two World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Togo in March.

His request to miss Friday night's clash against the Republic of Ireland and the meeting with England at the City Ground in Nottingham on Tuesday night 'for personal reasons' was reluctantly accepted by coach Pape Thiaw.

Mane, who plays alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, already faces an uncertain future at club level after being told by the Saudi Pro League club that he is free to find new employers this summer.
Senegal coach Thiaw said: 'It is a personal decision that belongs to Mane - and I respect it as a coach. Sadio is a very important player for us.
'But I don't coach one player, I coach 26 players, and so the most important thing is the collective. I have put together a squad of players who are available and ready to fight with pride for the national jersey.'
Mane has scored 45 goals in 113 appearances for Senegal since making his international debut in 2012. He scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out win over Salah's Egypt in the African Cup of Nations final in 2021 after missing a spot-kick early in the game.
Mane was named player of the tournament that year after scoring three times and also weighing in with two assists. But the two-time African Footballer of the Year now believes he is first in line to be criticised - despite becoming a national hero for his exploits on the pitch and his charity work off it.
Senegal's squad includes Premier League stars like Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace, Tottenham's Pape Sarr and Idrissa Gana Gueye of Everton. But the spotlight continually falls on the player who excelled for Metz, Red Bull Salzburg, Southampton, Liverpool and Bayern Munich during 12 years in Europe.

Senegal are currently second in the 2026 World Cup qualification table, a point behind DR Congo after being held to a goalless draw with Sudan before beating Togo 2-0. Mane said: 'A lot is said about me and I think I'm the most criticised player in Senegal.
'I don't have a problem with it. Everyone is free to give their opinion. But there must be better things to do than criticise Sadio Mane. What does it even get you?'
Augustin Senghor, the president of the Senegalese Football Federation, said: 'Of course, it's a heartbreak because everyone knows what Sadio means to our team. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise, both for him and for us.
'We hope to have him back in top form for future matches, but this is a great opportunity for others to show themselves. The most important thing is that Sadio is there and ready for the big events to come.'

It continues Mane's torrid time since leaving Anfield, which he did after they lost the Champions League final in 2022. He was a star with the Reds, forming one of Europe's most fearsome attacks, but has been unable to continue that form since leaving English shores. ‌ A move to Bayern Munich last just a season and now Al-Nassr, where he's played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, have told him he can seek pastures new after two seasons in the Middle East. There are rules over how many foreign players can be in a team and the Saudi outfit have set their sights on Alejandro Garnacho. ‌ The Manchester United star has struggled to convince Ruben Amorim, who has left him on the bench for key games, and a move away from Old Trafford is being discussed and could ultimately suit all parties. Mane's former Liverpool team-mate Luis Diaz was also seen as an option, but Arne Slot claims he wants to retain the player. That is despite the Colombian admitting he's not held contract talks with those at Anfield as he considers his next move. Ryan Gravenberch on Liverpool success, fitting nickname and Arne Slot influence

Ryan Gravenberch played an integral role in Liverpool's Premier League title win, with new manager Arne Slot using the 23-year-old midfielder in a more defensive role Ryan Gravenberch has been 'different gravy' for Liverpool this season - which fits in perfectly with the nickname that's been given to the Dutchman on international duty. 'Gravie' has enhanced his reputation in Holland for being a serial winner during his two seasons at Anfield, becoming Arne Slot's midfield enforcer as the Reds were crowned Premier League champions after his debut campaign under Jurgen Klopp ended with a Carabao Cup medal. ‌ The 23-year-old won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, as well as two Dutch Cups, the Bundesliga and German Super Cup with Bayern Munich, and was part of the Holland Under-17s team that became European champions in 2018. ‌ Gravenberch said: 'The realisation about how much I have won so far isn't quite there yet. Maybe it will come later. It all goes so fast. Of course, I know that winning the Premier League is one of the biggest prizes you can win. 'For the past four weeks, it has just been a big celebration. The celebrations and the bus ride were wonderful to experience. It has been a super great season and that makes me proud. The Premier League is the strongest league in the world. I showed myself to the world again and achieved my goals.' It took Gravenberch time to find his place at Liverpool following his £33.7million arrival from Bayern. He had also struggled in his one and only season in the Bundesliga after moving to Germany from Ajax after breaking through at the Amsterdam club under the guidance of Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman made a respectable 21 Premier League starts under Klopp. Yet Slot's bold decision to move him into a more defensive midfield berth immediately reaped dividends, with Gravenberch making 37 starts in 38 games as the Reds romped to the title. Gravenberch said: 'When the coach told me about where he wanted me to play, I just thought 'when can I start?' I knew I could do it, even though defensively I sometimes had my doubts. I do think I took a big step forward because it actually went naturally. 'From the first training session it went pretty well. As the season went on, opponents started to put a different pressure on us and closed us down through the middle. But that created space somewhere else. It was up to us to find the free players. ‌ 'How did I do that physically? Good question. It's a matter of recovering well, where the people at Liverpool also deserve a big compliment. Football has become a running sport - running, running, running. 'The intensity is of course higher than before, especially in the Premier League. I have that by nature. I can run. But at Ajax, the emphasis in training was more on technique and positional play. In England, you have to run a lot more.' ‌ Gravenberch hopes his emergence as a key performer at Anfield will enable his international career to flourish in a similar way. The Dutchman didn't feature for a single minute during last summer's Euros, when Holland reached the semi-finals before losing to England. Gravenberch added: 'That's how it goes in football. What happened at the European Championships can happen - and then you have to move on. At Liverpool I was given the chance to become a base player and to show myself. 'That was my goal and I succeeded. But I still have no idea yet what my role will be exactly for the national team because the coach can go in different directions with me. 'I can play in all positions in midfield, but especially at 'six' and 'eight'. I am curious to see what he chooses. Before at Ajax, I really wanted to play left-half, but now I don't care anymore.'

Thomas Tuchel unhappy with lack of quality in England win against Andorra

Harry Kane finally gave the 6,950 travelling fans something to cheer about when he broke the deadlock early in the second half, turning in lively Noni Madueke's cross, but the expected goals onslaught did not follow. 'I am not happy with the performance, of course,' German coach Tuchel said on ITV1. A 1-0 win for the #ThreeLions in Barcelona 👊 — England (@England) June 7, 2025 'We started quite well in the first 20-25 minutes, which was the only part where I had the feeling it was only a matter of time, we created a lot of half-chances and from set-pieces, that we will score and keep on going. 'But we lost completely the momentum and couldn't get it back through the whole of the first half. 'We got a little bit of it back in the first 15 minutes of the second half and then ended up in a period which was by far not good enough – lack of urgency, lack of quality and lack of energy.' England play a friendly against Senegal in Nottingham on Tuesday night and Tuchel is expecting a much-improved display. 'We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us and we need to do better,' the England boss added. 'We need a bit of time to look at it in detail and address it clearly and directly to be better on Tuesday.' Tuchel was also not happy with how England finished the match. 'We have to play until the 93rd minute. I didn't like the lack of urgency in the end,' he said. 'It did not match the occasion at all, it is still a qualifier away from home, I didn't like it at all. 'The players know all I said to you, because I said it in the dressing room, but it is also necessary to have a look in detail, watch the match again, and then we will let them know tomorrow what we want from them.' England captain Kane accepted it 'wasn't the greatest performance'. The Bayern Munich forward added: 'I don't think many people will remember this one but we can learn from it. 'It is very hot here, a dry pitch, probably similar conditions to maybe next year at the World Cup, so we will go away and analyse. 'We had good spells in the game but we couldn't have attack after attack. We take the three points and we move on.' "Some of the players looked bored" 🥱 Roy Keane and Karen Carney reflect on an underwhelming England victory against Andorra #ITVFootball | #ThreeLions — ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 7, 2025 England's listless display did not sit well with former Republic of Ireland international Roy Keane, who offered a scathing post-match analysis. 'We try and make excuses for England with the end of the season and it's been tough on the players,' the former Manchester United midfielder said on ITV1. 'I thought the first half was okay but when they scored the goal it felt it was job done. 'I was really disappointed with England's attitude after the goal went in. The manager can't be happy with that effort in the last half an hour. 'I felt like some of the players looked like they got bored in the last half an hour and I don't like to see that.'
