Sadio Mane hit with bombshell decision after requesting to miss England fixture

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Sadio Mane has been told that his Al-Nassr days are numbered as they eye new transfers with the Senegal icon also asking to skip his country's game with England are heavy criticism
Al-Nassr have told former Liverpool star Sadio Mane that he can leave the club this summer as they look to bring a top class replacement to Saudi Arabia.
It continues Mane's torrid time since leaving Anfield, which he did after they lost the Champions League final in 2022. He was a star with the Reds, forming one of Europe's most fearsome attacks, but has been unable to continue that form since leaving English shores.

A move to Bayern Munich last just a season and now Al-Nassr, where he's played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, have told him he can seek pastures new after two seasons in the Middle East. There are rules over how many foreign players can be in a team and the Saudi outfit have set their sights on Alejandro Garnacho.

The Manchester United star has struggled to convince Ruben Amorim, who has left him on the bench for key games, and a move away from Old Trafford is being discussed and could ultimately suit all parties.
Mane's former Liverpool team-mate Luis Diaz was also seen as an option, but Arne Slot claims he wants to retain the player. That is despite the Colombian admitting he's not held contract talks with those at Anfield as he considers his next move.

It could all leave the Senegal icon looking for a new home and he's copping it on the international stage too - so much so that he's asked to sit out his country's upcoming game against England. The Three Lions will host the African nation at the City Ground in Nottingham in a matter of days.
Mane asked to be left out of Senegal's showpiece friendly against England after being targeted by critics and trolls over his recent performances for the African country. The 33-year-old was gutted to be singled out for widespread stick after the two World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Togo in March.
His request to miss Friday night's clash against the Republic of Ireland and the meeting with England and cited 'personal reasons', which were reluctantly accepted by coach Pape Thiaw.
Thiaw said: 'It is a personal decision that belongs to Mane - and I respect it as a coach. Sadio is a very important player for us. But I don't coach one player, I coach 26 players, and so the most important thing is the collective. I have put together a squad of players who are available and ready to fight with pride for the national jersey.'

Adam Idah must crack Celtic contrast for Ireland as country striker battle could shift to Parkhead

The Hoops hitman still has some doubters to win over despite rattling 20 goals on the way to the domestic double last season Adam Idah gets a fair bit of flak for a guy who scores every 100 or so minutes on the pitch for Celtic. The big striker notched 20 goals last season for the Hoops and to add to the nine he bagged during his six months loan stint the previous campaign – which included three in the Champions League, a couple against Rangers at Ibrox and the winner in the Old Firm Scottish Cup Final in 2024. ‌ Yet there are still some doubters to be won over on the back of his big money move from Norwich City last summer. ‌ And Idah's international boss Heimer Hallgrimsson can see signs of progress already. The frontman was handed a start for Republic of Ireland in their 1-1 draw with Senegal on Friday night and Icelandic gaffer spotted some encouraging signs. Hallgrimsson knows Idah's role with the Irish side is completely at odds with the task the striker faces with Celts. In Scotland, it's often up against 10 men parked behind the ball and space is tighter than a Weight Watchers meeting in a phone box. The boot is often on the other foot with Ireland but Hallgrimsson has been impressed with the versatility shown by the Cork lad. ‌ Idah is added more and more to his game with club and country and he's convinced the big man will shine for both. Hallgrimsson said: 'He produced a solid performance. His workrate was, I thought, better than often before. Again, it's healthy competition up front. 'Adam took the job seriously. Workrate has not been an issue but in his club it's just so different a role and it's difficult to switch. ‌ 'We need a lot of defending from our strikers and he's just not used to it at Celtic – where they have their possession at say 60 or 70 or 80 percent in games. 'The space he needs to work on in games is small. It's a switch and hopefully players are learning more and more. He is growing. He knows what we expect, so that's a positive sign.' ‌ Idah is battling it out with AZ Alkmaar's Troy Parrot and Brighton's Evan Ferguson to be the main man up top for Ireland and he's likely to be given another crack in the clash against Luxembourg on Tuesday. And there's still a chance Idah and Ferguson could be club rivals as well. Celtic were in the hunt to land the Seagulls ace on loan in January before West Ham stepped in. The 20-year-old's domestic career has stalled over the last season after bursting on to the scene the previous campaign when he rattled 16 goals. ‌ It's been a tougher 12 months and the spell at West Ham didn't go to plan, with just eight goalless appearances, mainly from the bench. Ferguson was on trial at Parkhead as a teenager when he was with Bohemians and has admitted to being a boyhood Hoops fans. Rodgers is in the marker for a striker to compete with Idah next term – and could be keeping a close eye on Ireland this week. ‌ Ferguson's international gaffer is hoping to give the frontman a spark that he can take back into the club game for pre-season. Hallgrimsson said: 'Evan has been really good and we were even thinking of starting him against Senegal. 'He's been sharp in training and I think you saw when he came on he was sharp. We've been really happy with him in the sessions. Whether he was ready for 90 minutes, we were not sure. ‌ 'When you do friendlies and give players a chance you will get answers. Not all of them will be positive answers but you need to have answers. 'The new players have rocked the boat a bit, so the players watching will think 'oh, this one is coming'.' Hallgrimsson also has Hoops defender Liam Scales on board. The centre back came off the bench against Senegal and is in line for a start in Luxembourg after another solid season for Celts, where he eventually saw off the challenge of Auston Trusty to nail down a starting berth for the run in. Hallgrimsson said: 'We need to have more than one option because if you are injured in September you might miss out for the whole series of six qualifiers. We must be prepared for that as well.'

Alisson makes admission on his Liverpool future as he reaches 'decisive moment'

Alisson has been Liverpool's No 1 for seven years but his contract is winding down as questions over his Liverpool future emerge ahead of next summer's World Cup Alisson admits he doesn't want talk of his Liverpool future to dominate the headlines ahead of a World Cup year but claimed the Reds "will probably exercise" the one-year option to extend his deal. The goalkeeper moved Anfield from Roma in 2018 for a then world-record fee and he has been crucial to their success ever since. He's just won the Premier League for a second time and, in his first year, landed the Champions League. ‌ Alisson is regarded as one of the Premier League's greatest ever goalkeepers and produced a career-best performance as Liverpool beat PSG in Europe back in March. He would leave a huge void if he did depart, but doesn't expect to. ‌ The Brazilian concedes he doesn't make long-term decisions but expected to remain with Liverpool as they continue building under Arne Slot with a World Cup triumph in America on his radar come next summer. He said: "I've never been able to plan long term. Obviously now I have one year left on my contract and another year of club option, which they will probably exercise. It's a decisive moment in my career, with a World Cup coming up. I want to be very focused, I don't want anything external to get in the way of that." Alisson would attract no shortage of attention if he did want to leave Anfield. One avenue that could open up would be a return to his homeland. The 32-year-old began his career at Internacional before heading to Europe and seeing out careers back in Brazil has been a common move. The likes of Neymar and Philippe Coutinho have returned to South America and Alisson admits he's heard mixed things. He said: "I talk to athletes who have made this move to return, some have had good experiences, others not. Each one will have their own experience, but I want to return, especially to Inter. I don't know when it will happen, but I still want to do it at a high level. That's what I have planned." Liverpool have just allowed Caoimhin Kelleher, who has served as Alisson's deputy, to leave for Brentford. The Irishman has long shown that he has the qualities to be first choice for a Premier League club. However the Reds' decision to cash in suggests they weren't planning for him to be their No 1 long-term. ‌ Kelleher has been allowed to move to Brentford in an £18m deal. Conversely there have been several arrivals. Liverpool have announced the signing of 20-year-old star Armin Pecsi - he joins from Puskas Akademia for £1.5m. That is a club-record fee for the Hungarian top flight club. Last year a £30m agreement was agreed that will see Georgian No 1 Giorgi Mamardashvili arrive on July 1. He was allowed to remain at Valencia but will head to Liverpool off the back of an impressive Euro 2024 that made a number of teams stand up and take note. Liverpool have proved shrewd operators when it comes to moving players on once they begin declining. There is no sign of Alisson leaving but the likes of Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can have been unable to achieve the heights they did at Anfield once departing.

Chelsea to agree £15m transfer deal for top target over coming hours

Chelsea are set to wrap up the signing of Mike Maignan from AC Milan over the coming hours. The Blues ended their campaign on a high after winning the Europa Conference League and securing Champions League football for next season with a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League. But determined to make up ground on their rivals, Chelsea's hierarchy quickly turned their attentions to the summer transfer market, completing deals for Sporting midfielder Dario Essugo and Ipswich striker Liam Delap. Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens is expected follow the duo to Stamford Bridge in due course and the west London giants are also closing in on an agreement for Maignan, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. It's claimed the final details of the proposed deal of Maignan will be ironed out by Tuesday, with Chelsea set to shake hands on a fee of €18million (£15m) for the France international. The report states that Maignan has been saying his goodbyes to his team-mates in Milan and the 30-year-old shot-stopper will soon be a Chelsea player, 'barring any surprises'. Chelsea had floated the idea of including one of Djordje Petrovic to Kepa Arrizabalaga in the agreement but Milan had no interest, favouring a cash-only agreement. The Blues hope to have Maignan ready and available for their Club World Cup campaign, which kicks off against Los Angeles FC at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 16. Maignan, who has made 163 appearances in all competitions for Milan, has just one year remaining on his current contract at the San Siro. Milan bosses have already begun scouring the market for Maignan's possible replacement, identifying Roma's Mile Svilar as their top transfer target. Enzo Maresca has been intent on bringing in a new goalkeeper after desperately poor season for Robert Sanchez, who lost his place to Filip Jorgensen midway through the 2024/25 campaign. ''Magic Mike' is his nickname because he's so exceptional,' ex-Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf told ESPN FC when asked about a proposed move for Maignan last week. More Trending 'But as much as I like him and I think he would fit perfectly to Chelsea… Chelsea have decided to give an exception in their trading business system. 'I think they should [make an exception] where you need a new Thiago Silva. 'It would be more interesting to have somebody as a centre-back. That would be my decision, but if they decide to go for Mike that's a very good decision because the guy is a really good goalkeeper. 'I know him, I appreciate him and I think he will be very useful to Chelsea.'
